  • People have always been interested in the combat applications of weapons rather than solo routines with weapons. Here we show you how our training focuses on interactive application practice and some partner drills to build up accurate timely touch to coping with a moving aggressive opponent. Techniques were originally simple and aimed for directly striking down the enemy after dismantling any possible resistance. However as the culture shifted to putting knowledge into solo non-interactive sets, very few schools now know how to train students to use the staff as a self-defense weapon.
The Eight Trigram Staff is originated from the famous spear art of the Yang family generals of the Song Dynasty. It is an integrated collection of effective battlefield techniques that took the form of staff fighting when passed down by the Wutai Mountain Monastery.
The common techniques such as 杀棍 (smashing stroke),盖棍标 (covering thrust) and 阴阳棍 (yin and yang staff) are drilled to let the practitioner get the right range and the ability to apply the technique to effect under pressure. This is priceless to a Kung Fu enthusiast as few schools will emphasize on learning single techniques in a skill with the purpose of being able to use them.
In our Eight Trigram Staff system we value familiarity with positions and directions, speed and strength alone will not let you have an advantage against similarly alert and healthy opponents. Because of the unfamiliarity untrained people have with weapon handling, knowledge of the attacking and defensive angles of each position will keep the trained person safe and know where to catch the weaknesses of the opponent's movements.
