      In addition to school counselors, getting professional help outside of the school is a good idea👍since students all have different strengths and ”qualifications”😊

      doesn't matter where you go to school as long as you get the education you need and the proper degree or certifications for the career or field of work you want to get into. Networking to meet the right people and gaining experience to build up your resume is the most important thing so when you finish school you have a foot in the door to get into a good job. Just showing up to a job interview with nothing to offer other than a piece of paper saying you got a degree that you can wave in their face isn't gonna get you anywhere.

    Serious question: Why and how will the reputation of the college I go to affect me when I'm older. I was always taught that it doesn't matter the prestige of the school, as long as you earn your college degree.

    • @aspiringking5000
      @aspiringking5000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      That’s a MYTH. Every time I tell my friends that I want to go to a prestigious college they think why would it even matter you can just go to our local college and be the best. NO THANK YOU. 1) it’s good to be in a diverse environment that still has people that can challenge you intellectually. 2) Well know colleges OBVIOUSLY have a better reputation but that reputation means a ton. Some people just want to hire people so they can be like yeah I have a worker who went to Yale or Harvard. Because most people that end up at those schools are hard workers. 3) THE PEOPLE YOU MEET. The connections you make. One day you might be talking to some science nerds and you can be like yo I know that teacher you’re talking about. I took one of his classes at MIT. It just helps to have well known connections. ITS LIKE YES GO FOR THE CLOUT BUT LIKE A GOOD FOR THE CLOUT.

    • @oliviajohnson4687
      @oliviajohnson4687 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Personally I don’t think it matters too much because while it is nice to have a pretty name on your reputation what truly matters is your worth ethic and how far you’re willing to go with that education. Employers would much rather see someone who went to a community college their first two years that now have a masters degree or doctorate than someone who went to an Ivy League but did nothing of importance while they were there.

      You dont need to go to an ivy school, as long go to a school that you know has a good program that is accredited if need be. Networking opportunities are key too. For example, in California we have Stanford, but i didnt bother applying because the price isnt worth the experience ill get. We have UCs and CSUs that rival Stanford with their own great programs, so i applied to those instead. Your school does matter to an extent, but you dont need an ivy school to be successful. The first reply to your comment just has some ego problems lol

      It’s not too big a deal. If you go to a known place that’ll be cool, but people act like everyone is a walking National college ranking website. If you went to the University of Delaware, random ass school, people won’t know anything about it. It’s obviously a state school, and it’s in Delaware, but do regular people know exactly how good it is? No. It’s a pretty good school, but most people will have no idea. Could be terrible or great. Why the hell would your neighbor know how good University of Delaware is. There are like 3 or 4 ranks (IMO). There are meh colleges, decent college, good colleges, and the high end colleges. If you go to a really high end college, people will know that when you say “I went to Harvard” it’s a good college. If you say a local college, people in that area will know how it is. But most people aren’t gonna look up your college if it’s a generic never heard of it school. There are a few thousand colleges in the US, people know like 12.

    Humbly, I got 3 kids in good colleges - Brown, Texas, and GA. Before making any decision, Id suggest reading Pillsbury’s “100 Years Marathon”. Pick a university committed to building and expanding your mind, not breaking and controlling it. Also maybe ck out Dr. Lipton’s older but currently relevant work: “Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism” - a little perspective on what ur generation is going to have to deal with (on behalf of Gen X - my apologies) published by UNC in 1961. Best of luck to you guys.

    Go to US News rankings and apply to 8 of the top 20 or so schools, plus 1-3 safeties / less elite, but still good schools that you have a high chance of getting in to. That’s the perfect way to choose.

      why?? what if those unis dont have the major you want? or maybe campus life in those unis are terrible and the neighborhoods arent safe. maybe those unis dont offer the extracurriculars that you wouldve loved to join in on. rankings are there for a reason, yes, but those ranking are for the public, not for you.

    Step 1. Go on US News
    Step 2. Repeat step 1.
    Jokes aside, a genuine question (please answer).
    The ACT is tomorrow, and since it is districts testing I cannot get out of it (no cancelling). But even if I do not show up tomorrow, the school said they would make me make up for the test on Saturday..
    Would I get a “zero” on the ACT if I don’t show up on Saturday either? All students (including me) filled out the frontal page of the ACT answer sheet (zip code, address, etc.) so is taking the test truly inevitable?

    I’m debating if I should accept my offer at Berkeley or just go to Irvine 😭. It’s just the fact that Berkeley appears to be super cut throat and competitive and I feel like I’m going to drown in that system :((( also I’m a transfer student (a uc to uc transfer) and I got used to the quarter system 😩

    • @brookifyd
      @brookifyd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're STEM or premed I would go Irvine (STEM majors tend to have the most competitive classes and if you're not in the top part of the class you run the risk of not graduating from the intended major), otherwise Berkeley IMO. Talk to other students and get online to research classes/teachers to avoid if you're afraid of inundation.

      3- be a perfect student in your school and have amazing relations with your maths and one of the humanities teachers for an amazing rec. letter
      4- Be a well rounded student but also be very very very very good at one thing, almost world class as that is going to be your main ticket to even be considered at MIT
