Hi our beloved Tun, Chinese families view EDUCATION as very IMPORTANT. One of the reasons that some working class Chinese are able to send their kids for tertiary education overseas is because they have reduced the size of their families. From an average family size of 5 in the 60s is now reduced to only 2, and many choose to have only 1 child nowadays - mainly due to cost of living and most importantly EDUCATION; a BIG sacrifice in order to give the kid/s better and quality education. Besides, both parents have to work very hard to realise this dream for their child. So the notion that Chinese is rich is not so true. Its all being exchanged with Sweat & Blood.

if I may ask why do chinese family sent their children to chinese vernacular school despite having sekolah kebangsaan . having this kind of disparities will create conflicts and tension between the races. this goes to other races. the percentage of fluent malay speakers are still low among malaysia except for sabah and sarawak which I fondly respect for their unity. having besfriends with non-bumi's I think we were taught with these ideologies since we're young young and yet we demand such action taken by the government and yet the action itself wasn't initiated by us. let us be malaysian and do the change starting from us and we'll see a for unite community as in sabah and sarawak.
Hi Anwar, many thanks your comment. For your info, many Chinese parents are very practical and they opt for Chinese vernacular school mainly due to the high standard of such school, be it in discipline or studies (esp. Maths and Science). Many such school also places high level of importance on the English language. Most of my classmates in the Science streams were mainly from Chinese school. Not only were their Maths and Science subjects extremely good, their English and Bahasa (to our surprise as only a few of us were from the National School then) were commendable. That's the reason why many NON-Chinese parents are enrolling their kids here, too. Understand that a number of our ex-minsters also have their kid in Chinese school.

Saudara Anwar, betul apa yang disebutkan oleh Jess Liew (fyi, saya tidak kenal dia cuma surname sama). Kebanyakan orang Cina sangat menitikberatkan pendidikan anak-anak kerana mereka tahu itu ada kunci untuk meningkatkan taraf hidup mereka. Walaupun susah, kena gadai rumah, kereta dan membuat lebih daripada satu perkerjaan, ibu bapa akan tetap memastikan anak-anak boleh belajar di universiti. Kenapa pula dihantar ke universiti luar negara? Jawapannya mudah, sebab mereka tidak diberi peluang untuk memasuki universiti tempatan walaupun keputusan peperiksaan cemerlang bukan kerana mereka semua adalah 'rich businessmen'.
Berkenaan sekolah kebangsaan dan sekolah Cina, apa yang dikongsi oleh Jess sememangnya adalah pemikiran kebanyakan orang Cina. Anak-anak dihantar ke sekolah vernakular Cina bukan kerana tidak mahu mereka bergaul dengan bangsa lain. Tetapi sekiranya berpeluang, saudara Anwar boleh pergi melawat sekolah Cina untuk melihat perbezaannya. Tatatertib, semangat maju diri dan berdikari, disiplin ketat dan daya saing tinggi amat ditekan. Matapelajaran seperti Matematik dan Sains memang amat diberi perhatian juga. Chinese has deep belief that education is most important in their children life but this belief is not found in Malays (sorry to say that). They work hard to sponsor their children. Just because you found many chinese study in UK, it does not mean all them are rich
I have even read of cases of children from quite rich Malaysian Malay families being offered scholarships abroad, even though they didn't need the scholarships in the first place. That's what is wrong with the current system, I think.

@@amirulasyraf2153 Lets face the fact. The Malay will never 100 % understand the Chinese. Likewise, the Chinese will never 100% understand Malay.
Hence, as Malaysian Chinese, we understand ourselves much better than even Tun M. There are many Malaysian chinese sending their kids to study overseas. While some of the parents are indeed rich, most of them are middle income. Hence, their kids have to do part time work to survive overseas.
It is a misconception that Malaysian Chinese mostly do business. Today, only handful did business. These are the rich people. But mostly are middle incomers whom are struggling financially in the rising cost and living urban area.
His aspirations is always crystal clear. It could be sum up as what any PM would ideally want for the country. This is a value not seen in other leaders. He spoke about racial harmony and prosperous country as though he honestly mean it. Has always consider himself as having obligation towards the country no matter how old and what state he is in. In my perspective, he will always be a true hero to Malaysia
Dear Mr. Richard Teh (somewhere below), Personally I don't mind Tun Dr Mahathir helping the Bumpiputras but I really hope that the Pakatan Harapan government will soon review the current policy concerning education and scholarships, making them available for each bright and clever Malaysian, as the young people of Malaysia are really the *software* of this nation, leading the way to Malaysia finally and hopefully becoming a First World Developed Nation, by 2025.

Dear branded (somewhere below), I won't use the word *betrayed* myself, but apparently more than 90% of the Malaysian Indian and Malaysian Chinese communities did vote for PH. So they apparently wanted their voices to be heard. The question now is: what will the PH government do, in the near future, concerning their needs, especially concerning education and scholarships for their children?.

Chinese people are very hardworking, they can survived anywhere & every where in the world. Chinese people in Malaysia some are very poor Tun, when are you going to help the poor Indians, poor chinese, poor kadazans etc?? When you were in power, NEP were implemented & still after 30 years, NEP is extended ...if Chinese or Indians or other races can succeed through their hardwork & despite coming from poor family, what do you think went wrong with NEP???? This new Pakatan Harapan should finally review the current policy regarding education and scholarships. Every citizen of every nation on this planet, including Malaysia, has the basic right to a good education. It is not a privilege. The young people of each nation is the *software* of a successful nation. I personally do not care about the other privileges like loans, housing, jobs in the public sector etc. The Sons Of The Soil of this nation can continue to enjoy all those privilges, for as long as they want, for eternity even, as far as I am concerned. Now that the DAP is in the government, the DAP should insist that the current policy on education and scholarships be immediately reviewed. Again, I will like to emphasis that education and scholarships are not privileges but are basic rights of each and every citizen of Malaysia. Each and every Malaysian should receive these basic rights, now that the Barisan Nasional has been voted out of office. More than 90% of the Malaysian minorities apparently did vote for PH. Their voices need to be heard, finally, 61 years after the Malaysian Independence from Great Britain. There should be no excuse to delay these basic changes, which will affect all the future generations of this nation.

For most of the 61 years, after the Malaysian independence from Great Britain, the probably about 75% majority in Malaysia (including the various indigenous groups in Sarawak and Sabah) were and are still being told that being Bumiputras or the Sons and Daughters of the Soil, they are being entitled to special rights.
During this same period of time, the minority group (20% Malaysian Chinese and 5% Malaysian Indians, probably) were and are still being told that this should be the way it is, probaby for eternity, to try to bridge the apparently so-called gap between the majority group, who are apparently still poor and the minority group (according to the majority group, specifically the Malaysian Chinese) which are probably still rich.
No nation on this planet treats her own citizen this way, special rights for this group, no special right for the other group, as far as I know.
In other countries, there are affirmation policies as well but it is always to help and protect the minority groups, not the other way around.
Now that the BN has been sent away and Pakatan Harapan (PH) is in Putrajaya and apparently more than 90% of the Malaysian Chinese and Indians having voted for PH, reducing the MCA, MIC and Gerakan to just three seats in the new Malaysian Parliament, I will really like to hear soon, from this new PH cabinet, not just from Tun Dr Mahathir, with all due respects to him, what the future will look like, for them, including myself, in the country, Malaysia, where they are born and bred.
The DAP, specifically Uncle Lim Kit Siang fought 53 years for a better Malaysia. Now that the DAP has 6 ministers and 5 deputy ministers in the new cabinet, what will the DAP do, to improve the daily lives of many millions of their DAP voters?.
The DAP owes their voters a good explanation what the DAP will do for them, during the next five years.
I have heard many stories of very poor families in the minority group, whose very bright and very clever children could not get further education in Malaysia because of the quota and at the same time being too poor, they just cannot afford to send their children abroad to get further education, being not entitled for the scholarships.
This situation has gone on now for two to three generations.
I have also heard some stories of some of the children of the majority group still apparently getting scholarships for further education abroad, while some of these families in the majority group are definitely already rich enough to pay for the studies themselves, in the first place.
To me, this is not right at all.
PH also promises a clean government in their election manifesto, before GE14.
Will the new PH government, after GE14, especially the DAP part of the 4-party PH coalition, finally come up for this group of really *POOR* Malaysians?
If Uncle Lim Kit Siang himself or his son Finance Minister YB Tuan Lim Guan Eng, after consulting first with our dear Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir and the entire PH cabinet, can soon come with a good explanation, it will be most appreciated indeed.

Intelligent Transportation systems are important to reduce crimes, traffic violations, and to enhance security and study the city traffic conveniently. With ITS, there's not much need of manual work and hence it is time-saving as well.

Tun ur comments on you met many Malaysian Chinese students when you were in overseas. Yes there are many Malaysian Chinese students overseas not only because of what you mentioned. That may be true. But there are many like me who could not get to study what we wanted to study in local university. But some with lower results managed to get to study what those courses.
So one of the way we Malaysian Chinese that wanted to study what we wanted had no option but to go overseas or else where to study what we wanted.
Not because our parents were rich. Or businessman.
They sacrificed their holidays locally or overseas and they borrowed and spent thrifty to save for us to go overseas to get to study what we wanted to.
So it is not all true that all our parents are rich. There are poor or moderate parents like mine who save from their hard earn earnings and send us overseas.
The best would be give based on merit to those deserving and qualify irrespective of race or religion.
If have a choice I would not want to study overseas. We would love to study local and be with our families.
I don’t want to spend my parents hard earn money for me to study overseas but they want us to be what we can be. To achieve our dream. If not then we would not be where many of us are today. They believe the best gift they can give their children is education. Even if they have to borrow or sell their house they will give it to their children.
Now we are parents ourselves are also doing the same.
Saving money and sending our kids overseas to study what they wanted to study because our kids also can’t get into local university.
This also is causing brain drain from Malaysia’s brightest away to a foreign country.

Me myself is a teacher teaching high school students in Penang. Although the school fees of a Chinese Private High School are normally more expensive than government schools, some of the students come from a poor family that have low income and are almost unable to support their living, their parents are still willing to pay for their kids for the sake of their future.
From what I can see, most parents here hope to use this amount of money to pay their children’s school fees, and what they want theirs children to achieve is to get their scholarships by themselves to go to college or universities. It’s not that Chinese parents are rich, some of them also have a lower income but they always ensure their kids to study hard (and of course, send them to tuitions). But this has resulted in their kids to get good results and get a scholarship.
In Chinese Private Schools, students take an exam called UEC, which is different from SPM as SPM uses English syllabus textbooks while UEC uses Chinese syllabus text books. But the problem is UEC wasn’t accepted by our own universities. So most students from Chinese Private schools ended having to get a scholarship and study in Taiwan or China, as those are the only countries that accept UEC.
To sum up, it’s not that the Chinese come from a rich background, but they study hard to achieve their goals although they also have many obstacles (UEC not accepted by local uni & low income families). The prime minister should also give support to poor Chinese and Indian families, not just for Malay families.
Dear Mr. Hassan Radwan, I really think only someone like Miss Christiane Amanpour or Mr. Anderson Cooper, both from CNN can ask these kind of questions. Mr. Anderson Cooper is also a correspondent for 60 minutes. 60 minutes might just be sufficient to try to get Tun Dr Mahathir to answer some really serious questions about Malaysia's future.

With all due respect Tun, who is stopping the Malays from running business and make tons of money (in your words) like the Chinese community ??? Chinese also work hard for the money, not like it fell from the sky. If you want to help, please help the poor for education, regardless of race.
I could understand the need of implementing new economy policy in the past since during that time the discrepancy of economical capability between races was huge but after nearly 50 years of implementation shouldn't we review whether this fact still holds? If it does, then we should really ask why after all this time, this policy doesn't help to change this fact? Maybe it is time to look for different approach, create a fair and competitive society among ourselves and not separating us by any sort of quota.

Yes getting rid of poverty for all races is somewhat relevant to moving on frm racial-based policy.. because this concept is deep rooted in MY politic. When PH gov implement more policies that also in favor of non-Malay races n start to demolish the Malay-privileges policy, I am sure that UMNO will use this to attach PH and play around using Malay insecurity sentiment.. What I really want to point out is that I do hope more young fellow Malays to see that they don't need this kind of policies to 'protect' them. We should instill competitiveness in our society in order to make Malaysia stay competitive in international arena. The threats are real, Vietnam is a good example.
vietnam is good example for other country.. not malaysia.. u should look up constitutional of Malaysia.. malay is strongly related to Islam.. non malay should be grateful because malaysia does not apply the whole islam practice. This is due to multiracial country. Malay still have a bit of consideration. But as malay, we have to be cautious because we do not want this country become a state of 'Burma'.
My example of Vietnam refer to the global competitiveness in term of economy not too sure whether you misunderstood me to something related to religion. Talking about being grateful, I do agree that non-Malays should appreciate islamic practice in Malaysia is way more moderate than other islamic countries in Middle East. But if I get my fact right, when Prophet Muhammed ruled Medina, he treated the minorities very fair and didn't force any non Muslim into submission, and just because of his peaceful manner n his governance was a symbol to tolerance, Islam started to spread worldwide. And as Chinese descendant I do feel grateful that my ancestor didn't have to go through what happened to the Chinese immigrants in Indo n Thailand but as a Malaysian citizen I just wish to see an equal national policy for all Malaysian regardless of our races, is it too much to ask for?

Tun Mahathir isn't wrong to say let's help the Malay's more than the Chinese. The Chinese and Indians have had THOUSANDS of years to develop their culture, work ethic and language. The Malay's have had since 1957 to do so, with the majority of the previous years being ruled by foreign powers, for example the portugese, dutch, japanese and british. One cannot expect one race to catch up with the Chinese in just 60 years, especially considering the religious and historical context. The chinese have china and the indians have india to preserve there identity and culture, but Malaysia is all the Malays and the bumi's have for that. All Malaysians should understand and learn Malay. My neighbours who are chinese have all their children given government scholarships. Yes, they were smart and hardworking, and they still received full scholarships. Another indian neighbour, from a very rich family was given a full jpa scholarship to study medicine in london because she obtained 10A1's during SPM. The problem is scholarships should be given to the poor, not the rich. The rich can take care of themselves anyway. That's the point. Why waste taxpayer money on those who can afford it? Let's face it, the Malay's by large are in need of government funding more than the other non-bumi's. In the event that there is a limited amount of money for only one student, the money will go to the poor malay compared to the poor chinese or indian. I accept it. That's the hard truth. But the pakatan government need to ensure that scholarships are given out to the poor, and not to those who can afford it. This means, a poor malay or a poor chinese or poor indian is prioritized over a rich Malay in the event of limited funds
Whatever happened to the Bangsa Malaysia and the Ketuanan Malaysia of Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, after GE14?. Well, the whole outside world is now watching closely, including the many hundreds of thousands of Malaysians now living overseas, who decided to leave the country for one reason or another, how Malaysia handles this important issue, now that the whole issue has been brought into the open, thanks especially to the internet and social media (which also incidentally helped PH to win GE14).
Michael Wong let the whole world watch. It's a matter of how Malaysian's themselves handle the situation, not the whole world. The whole world can do what they want, but Malaysia will do what it deems best. One can say that we are watching how the whole world treats weaker countries, for example Iraq, Syria and Palestine. Have you ever thought about their plight? As Malaysians we should determine the direction of the country as the majority and as the constitution sees fit.
Dear markbr, do you really want Malaysia to go down in history as probably the only country in the world with this kind of policy?. Specifically, this way for one group of Malaysians and that way, for another group of Malaysians, all being born and bred in Malaysia. As I have already said earlier, I don't know about other people and what they really want or think but I don't really care personally about all the other privileges like jobs in the whole public sector, loans, housing etc. (all the Sons and Daughters of the Soil of Malaysia can keep all those privileges for themselves, even for eternity, if they so desire) but education should be made available to all Malaysians, which will mean doing away with those really dreadful quotas, already depriving quite many clever and bright Malaysians from the non-Bumiputra category, those without the financial means of furthering their studies abroad instead, from fulfilling their personal dreams and ambitions, already for two to three generations. Do please spare a thought for the really poor families, from Malaysian Chinese and Malaysian Indian backgrounds, who apparently can't afford to send their children overseas, to get a good education, the good education which they can't receive in their own country, because of the current quotas, for the non-Bumiputras, even if they have excellent results. For those who are wealthy or have just enough, that won't be a problem of course. I have read of scholarships actually being given to the children of some very rich Malaysian Malays, who do not need them, in the first place. That's exactly what's really wrong with the current system.
Dear winston28lim (please see below), I don't have a computer with chinese characters so I will just have to reply to you in English. All I will like to point out to you is that not all the Malaysian Chinese in Malaysia are rich enough to send their children overseas. So what will happen if they were to have excellent results but due to the current quotas for non-Bumpiputras in Malaysia, they can't get a place in a local university?. It's always rather easy to comment from a comfortable position (I think that you are most probably from a rather well-to-do family) but if one has the misfortune of being born in a family with less money in Malaysia, then lady luck won't be on one's side, I think. Basically, that is what is wrong with the current policy regarding education and scholarships in Malaysia, especially for the non-Bumiputras, as far as I am concerned.

I really wish this interviewer could have asked better questions, there are many more crucial and important questions she missed. Like how is Malaysia going deal with its foreign relations and other, more particular United States and Trump? What are the things that we must improve on with regards to the education system in Malaysia? What has Mahathir learned from his previous experience during his 22 years as a prime minister? a little research goes a long way..

With all due respect, this sort of policy-making might be acceptable 50 years ago. Now we are 50 years further. DAP fought for so long and has finally reached Putrajaya. There are now 6 DAP ministers and a few DAP deputy ministers. I hope that DAP can now try to change the policy which has disadvantaged the Malaysian Chinese, Malaysian Indian (and apparently also the Malaysian Orang Aslis, the real Sons Of The Soil, are they not?) communities for two to three generations so far, from within. As I have written below, I personally don't care that much about the other privileges and special rights for the Bumiputras, like jobs in the public sector, loans, housing etc. but I do feelvery strongly that education and scholarschips should be made available to each and every Malaysian, as that is the basic right and entitlement of each and every Malaysian citizen. The thinking *the Malaysian Chinese are so rich but the Malaysian Malays are still so poor* should be completely abandoned, in this modern age, as I consider it rather inhuman to still think that way and actually quite offensive as well. But then who am I?.
i hope u can provide the percentage of rich among chinese and percentage of rich among malay.. then i will accept your opinion.. yet the fact from Tun is still consistent till today
Why don't you go around and just ask the parents of some of the poor families who can't afford to send their children overseas for further studies (having missed out on the local universities because of the quotas) while (at the same time) even some of the children of some rich Malaysian Malays apparently still get scholarships for further studies abroad (even though they didn't need the scholarships in the first place)?. Some of the Malaysians who wrote in (right here with this article) have already shared their personal stories. Maybe you should them all carefully first, as well and then we can discuss this issue further. Thank you.

First of all, i do agree with your view that nowdays the children did get the scholarship eventhough their parent came from wealthy background.. i absolutely oppose the policy.. but what i meant was percentage of malay rich among malay community is lower than 30 percent..
Are these policies really helping?. A small group of Malaysian Malays are probably already becoming very rich, because of these policies, probably because he or she used to know someone from UMNO, in the past, for example, before GE14, thus probably getting some of the government contracts. What about the Malaysian Malays in the traditional Malay heartlands?. Scholarships for example should actually be awarded based on needs, to all poor families, from all backgrounds, don't you agree with me?.

Dev King, what's there to learn from Mahathir? If he is so good, during his term as PM before, Malaysia would have been a great nation but it has gone from bad to worst. I found the appointments of LGE, Anthony Loke, Hannah Yeoh, Teresa Kok, Gobind Singh Deo, Azmin Ali, Dr Wan Azizah and a few others, in the new Malaysian cabinet actually quite inspiring. With true democracy of 'equality,freedom, justice' as espoused in the Merdeka constitution, you will have opportunities for every Malaysian .No group will be marginalised. No group can grab everything for themselves.Only then, will Malaysia prosper. That was what was promised by our founders and architects of our democracy.

Actually, alot of business owners are chinese. Being "poor" in Tun M's term is not like "not having Mercedez Benz" while others only have VIVA or maybe proton saga. I certainly feel that the chinese have power in recruiting their own people, if not controlled, chinese business owners will always give way to other chinese to go up the ladders, while other races stay the same level, the same salary for 10 years over. What we see is the gap of economies. When other races try to join a chinese owned company, we see all this gap. Not because malays are "malas" or stupid like what people like to say. We are as good as the others but not given fair chances to rise to the top, simply bcos we dont eat dimsum and we dont speak chinese, our eyes not sepet and we dont celebrate chinese new year. If you want the gap to be closed, The chinese also must play a role in the economy by opening more jobs to the "capable" MALAYSIANs, irregardless of race or religion. Can you do that?

There are more Malays than Chinese in Malaysia. It has hard for Tun to to be fair to all. This world is not fair anyway. I believe the Government will help all races but the percentage of scholarships given will be higher for Malays because they have a larger population. Don't forget, there will also be a lot of very smart Malay students who will also not get the scholarships. My advise is everyone should work hard, be innovative and be brave to take risks. Try not to rely on the Government for help. In todays world, u can learn so much from Google, TH-cam and free information online. Why worry so much about going to University? It does not guarantee u success in life. So, don't make this a racial issue.
Very well use of the democracy system where the majority Malays initiated the Malay preferential treatment policy against the minority Chinese, Indians, Paranakans. Bravo Malaysia. Actually, the government should speed up the process by making the minorities Chinese and Indians pay more taxes, and enforcing new policy whereby jobs will only be available to Chinese and Indians after every Malay has secured a job. Every Malay should be given a place in university regardless of the examination result, to achieve 100% Malay undergraduate. Government should also enforce wealth transfer from wealthy Chinese, Indian families to the unfortunate Malay families. Afterall, sharing one's wealth and achievements with the unfortunate Malay is a kind deed. It has been over 50 years since the implementation of this wonderful policy, however, the results seem unconvincing. Therefore, more drastic, revolutionary means are needed to close the economic gaps between the majority Malays and the monorities Chinese and Indians. Very soon, the word Poor and Malay will never be in the same sentence anymore. Malaysia Boleh and best wishes.

Tun must stop his old ways of thinking. Not all Chinese families are in business. Most are wage earners. I studied in USA with money enough for one semester. The rest of my expenses in USA was from part time jobs in restaurants and university campus. I was holding 2 jobs while finishing my degree. 90% of Malaysian Chinese studying in my university were working part time to cover our cost of education.
