      Honestly, my reaction was "how'd it last this long?" I was there in the early 2000's, and I thought it was going to go sideways at any moment. FUBAR was the word of the day, every day. I was USN CSaR, so I mostly only put boots in dirt for no more than a week at a time, and even I could see that things were shaky. I can only imagine what it was like for the USMC and US Army troops that were actually in country 24/7. I've heard stories from fellow vets, but I'm sure they aren't doing justice.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean there is a non zero chance that any given reasonably healthy man could survive winning a fight with a bear or a shark. There is also a non zero chance of someone sneaking some drugs into my next beverage, me buying a lottery ticket, winning, and using the money to buy 10 consecutive winning lottery tickets without losing once so that doesn't say much, but it isn't impossible.

    • @darkermatter125.35
      @darkermatter125.35 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@garethbaus5471 yes, statistically there is a non-zero chance. The drink one, depending on your gender and location is WAY more likely than the others, the lottery one is... beyond statistically insignificant, and I would put the bear one in the statistically insignificant range. Because these men who are asked are not polled about encountering a bear and surviving when it is aggressive, but straight up fighting a bear... now, you CAN win with a knife in a gun fight in close quarters. More than you can win against a bear. BUT a knife vs someone coming at you with a machine gun firing, you're dead unless you get SUPER fucking lucky, and you are able to hide until the guy is close enough. But that guy was obviously not the brightest.

    • @garethbaus5471
      @garethbaus5471 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@darkermatter125.35 since I am a male who doesn't go to parties the chance of someone sneaking the type of drugs into my next beverage that would lower inhibitions enough for me to buy a lottery ticket without reducing my motor control enough to prevent me from doing so is probably low enough to be comparable to winning the lottery at least once, but yes that absurd set of circumstances was intentionally selected to be technically possible but unlikely enough that it really isn't worth ligitimately planning for. Also depending on what is meant by close quarters, and whether or not the guy with the gun is expecting you, or you are expecting the guy with a gun you might actually have slightly a better chance against a bear assuming you have a decent sized knife (more because guns are really effective at stopping you before you get close enough to touch your opponent then because you are likely to win a fight with a bear.

    • @darkermatter125.35
      @darkermatter125.35 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@garethbaus5471 There is literally different training for knife/gun interactions with close quarters, 15 feet was the furthest distance set within the parameters of one video for a police training situation where the knife was out. All things change depending on knife and gun size within close quarters. Like if you are trying to pull a shotgun vs a knife in close quarters, it is honestly better to use it as a club of some kind first before shooting. I am a 4'11" woman who has had to fight way too many rapey men, and also pull knives on way too many rapey men, because they see me as an easy target if they aren't street smart. People who are more familiar with dangerous areas never get near me, because they see I'm comfortable there and not an easy mark. That is why I know things about close quarter combat, because I've even had to use it against a veteran. So I am sadly pretty fucking well versed in these situations. I have come up against people with guns before, but they have backed off and haven't pulled it. I've also had people try to kidnap me, as I grew up in an area full of pedophiles.
      And I wasn't trying to equate them, I'm just saying that a man with no weapons fighting an angry bear in a ring and thinking he will win (poll taken in the US might be an important thing to know) is a mindset that an unreasonable number of men have, so if we were to let them all do it, the statistics of winners would be statistically negligible, in my opinion.
      Also, as someone who has been drugged twice (like I said, men just REALLY like to fuck around and find out with me), that shit hits you hard and fast, and my advice, should it happen, is the moment something feels off, immediately get to safety, alerting someone on your way. Each time I got to a place only a few blocks away and locked myself up safely, thankfully the second time I had flashed a knife, kicked off heels, and ran, because there were multiple men.
      Also I just didn't want to assume your gender, I don't mean any offense in any of my comments.

      @@iowafarmboy They didn't want Bin Laden dead tho, keeping him "out there" was too helpful in scaring people into supporting more wars that weren't about the thing they were said to be about. Obviously, it would look bad if Bin Laden kept funding anyone with a plan to attack the US, so they just capitulated to his demands, and closed the military bases in Saudi Arabia. Obama only needed to kill Bin Laden because he wanted to put the drone base in Saudi Arabia, those Yemeni children aren't gonna blow themselves up! Well, enough "over the horizon" trauma, and they might eventually start doing just that.
      The problem with setting up a democracy was never that it couldn't be done, but it was never really tried... democracy means listening to the population, not creating a corrupt "elite"(ish) and then trying to pretend they have some kind of legitimacy. Especially not all out of Kabul, ignoring the massive regional differences in what people want and who they will work with. Democracy is not something you give people, it's something you let them have.

    I live in Australia and while Ill admit the border laws are strict, its not like there was no warning they were closing. Those people overseas who got stuck, its not like they had no idea it was going to happen. The government had been saying for weeks "We are going to do this, come back home folks and if you are planning to leave, don't. People overseas, if you want to come back, come back home now. Okay its been like a month now" *Door closes* Suddenly, people overseas "WHY WERE WE GIVEN NO WARNING???". Wait, what? What the fuck? What the ever loving mother fucking fuck? The pandemic was getting heavy, you were told, why the heck didn't you come home. There comes a point in things were people have to take responsibility for their own actions. By the time borders were closed you had had plenty of warning it was happening. Its not like it was like the government set a stop watch at three seconds and went "Three, two, one, sorry you're fucked". The problem with this issue is letting a pustulent infection like Katie Hopkins in when our own citizens couldn't get in. I mean if I was an Aussie still stuck overseas Id be like "Oh damn, maybe I should get a swastika tattoo and start posting hateful shit against non-whites online, maybe then I can get back home". Seriously Aussie government, what fucking message are you sending to the world. "Racists welcome! Everyone else can fuck off!"? We are like a dollar store South Africa.
    Edit: 20K was too much for Katie. The UK should have paid us to take her. I am not even sure why we deported her when we have so many sharks just offshore :P

The number he found out that he would have had to pay without the insurance he has.. is way above the number you used as a throwaway amount that it could be.. .. and that is just for them cutting it off. This is not speaking of a prosthetic, hospital time, physical therapy ,ect..
    Keep in mind though this is the result of a surgery he had during his football days ( American football ) where they took out something that.. Back then they thought is what you should do.. When it turns out it was the worst thing you could do.. and since that point.. Basically imagine bone being smashed on bone with nothing between it, it losing several inches of bone every X amount of months doing that.. and hes had that for years.. At least till he had total knee replacement surgery. ( Twice. They also wanted to do a ligament replacement but he refused it.. The fact that it was going to be from a corpse did not sit well with him.. )
    .. That said I would have hated it if he where still living back in our home country.. Since medicine there at the time was basically a few years behind. ( And still is mostly due to "That is how things are done". Gotta love Japan and how hard it is to get things changed for the better.. When I last lived in Japan I tried to get schools into using new books for English. The ones they currently use is full of misspellings as well as meanings that are fully incorrect... Back then I found out the hard way that such a thing is basically impossible to get changed.. *Small edit.* In-case anyone is wondering why I do not live in Japan. The US has basically been mostly my home since I was 9 when my brother became my legal guardian, my brother being 15 years older than me... I did live in Japan again for a few years in my 20s but went back to the US due to my brother needing help... My brother sadly really,really hates our relatives in Japan and.. Has a overall dislike for our home country.. I normally visit relatives every other year but you know.. Cant with covid.. Though I was allowed to attend a funeral for the youngest uncle of mine who was killed in a firebombing.. Sadly that was the last time I have been in Japan thinking about it. )

    Regarding that woman that would not let her children play with lower class names and she inserted two names. You did not understand why those days would be lower class… In America those names would be associated with Black people so this indicates that she is indeed A racist although we probably already knew that from other things that she said

    Miles Routledge probably was inspired by Rory Stewart, who at the age of 30 (2002) took a break from the British Foreign Service to hike across Afghanistan and then was made assistant governor of a province in Iraq, despite having little relevant experience. Rory Stewart's book, "The Prince of the Marshes," describes the descent into chaos of his province during his tenure. Upon his return to the UK, Stewart entered politics and was elected to parliament and served in the cabinet. He is now a fellow at Yale University. His books are worth a read.

    Sounds like a total Karen to me. He thinks it’s funny or ironic somehow but maintains he will be safe. This man has no idea how close he came to oblivion. The Taliban DO NOT play games. He came inches from being imprisoned, tortured, and beheaded. All he accomplished was wasting government time and money. He has also made a mockery of all the lives lost in that region. Shame on him and his family.
