  • This is a play-through using Earthworm Jim in the PC version of Battle Arena Toshinden 1. Read on below for more information...
    Earthworm Jim is a special hidden boss in 1P Game mode on the harder difficulty settings. He is an unlockable playable character.
    ===== HOW TO UNLOCK JIM =====
    There are two ways to do this, as follows:
    ----- METHOD 1 -----
    1) Set the game's difficulty to Very Hard.
    2) Play through 1P Game mode and beat the boss Gaia, do all of this without using a Continue. After the story text and move demonstration, you'll then get to fight Sho.
    3) Beat Sho on your first attempt. This means that you cannot use any Continues against him. After the ending and move demonstration, you'll then get to fight Jim.
    4) Beat Earthworm Jim. He'll then be unlocked on the character select screen along with Gaia and Sho. Just move off the edge of the characters icons and they'll be there.
    ----- METHOD 2 -----
    During gameplay, type in "gimmiejim" on the keyboard without the quotes. (unconfirmed)
    ===== ABOUT BAT EARTHWORM JIM =====
    Jim is the main protagonist character in the Earthworm Jim series of games. He appears in the PC version of Toshinden 1 as a result of Playmates publishing the game, due to Playmates' association with Earthworm Jim's creators Shiny Entertainment, and also due to the agreement that Playmates and Takara had done at the time whereby Takara published the Earthworm Jim games in Japan while Playmates published Battle Arena Toshinden 2 and 3 in the USA.
    Those who have played the Earthworm Jim games (which I have) will know that Jim is a very humour-based character with plenty of phrases/voices and mannerisms... which have become his trademark. These phrases have made it into the game, in which fans of the Earthworm Jim will definitely recognize.
    Gameplay-wise... this guy is just a clone of Rungo Iron. Just think Rungo with Jim's 3D model graphics and you're there. They have the exact same basics, specials and supers... but I'm not sure on whether their ranges and damage output are the same or not. It probably is the same.
    ===== ADDITIONAL INFORMATION =====
    ---- On the character select screen, just like Gaia and Sho, he has no icon and no image portrait.
    ---- His weapon is not a club, instead it appears to be Major Mucus, an alien being made of phlegm who appears as an enemy opponent that Jim has to fight in the Snot A Problem level in Earthworm Jim 1.
    ---- His stage background is the same as Rungos, but instead it plays the Andy Asteroids BGM theme from Earthworm Jim 1.
    ---- He has many voices and phrases that come from the platform games.
    ---- When Jim gets beaten or falls out of the ring, his scream sounds like the same one used in the BGM of the What the Heck? level in Earthworm Jim 1.
    ===== ABOUT PC BAT1 =====
    This is a rather interesting port of the PS1 version of the game... the most significant difference of it is the inclusion of the character Earthworm Jim, who serves as a hidden CPU boss opponent and can also be unlocked as a playable character. The game uses the soundtrack from the Japanese version of the PS1 game (yes, the soundtrack is different to the USA and EUR versions).
    As it is a PC game, there was the option of improving the graphics with additional hardware, which was something that bettered the PS1 port if it was implemented.

      @@Catkeeper The thing is, while Ryo Sakazaki of Art of Fighting series showing up as a secret boss of Fatal Fury Special and Akuma showing up as a secret boss of X-Men CotA are essentially yes guest characters, the thing is, they are still creations of the companies that made those games. SNK created and owned Art of Fighting and of course Capcom created and owned Street Fighter.
      This on the other hand is a true guest character in every sense of the word, as Earthworm Jim has absolutely nothing to do with both Takara (Japanese publisher of Toshinden) and Tamsoft (Japanese developer of Toshinden) of this game. Takara allowed and went out of its way to secure a Western created video game character from a completely different region of the world using a different company.(Playmates, who localized the PC port using Digital Dialect to do the PC port conversion). And Playmates of course had previously published the Earthworm Jim games for SNES, Genesis. Sega CD., hence why he showed up as a guest here. So its a bit more special here.
      Had Takara thrown something of their own creation in as a guest for Toshinden, like someone from their Battle Beasts toyline, Diaclone toy line, Microman/Microchange toy line, then it'd be more in line with what Capcom did with Akura in X-Men (even though X-Men is Marvel of course) or what SNK did with Ryo in Fatal Fury
      Playmates would also go onto publish Toshinden 2 in the U.S while Sony published it in the EU region and Takara self published in Japan like they always did.
      This is more equivalent to like how when we got Gon the midget T-Rex manga dinosaur in Tekken 3, Cole from Infamous in SF X Tekken, Kratos from God of War showing up in both Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur, Spawn showing up in Soul Calibur, and of course the others now showing up in more recent fighters

      @@Catkeeper Fatal Fury Special in '93 has X-Men CotA beat by just one year, Ryo Sakazaki from Art of Fighting is a secret boss. Was the first time we saw the two games cross over, once again in the year prior to King of Fighters making it a regular thing.

    • @AlexTheSoutherner
      @AlexTheSoutherner ปีที่แล้ว +9

      King Of Fighters is built on the idea of guest characters. It was entirely a game made up of SNK properties and a few brand new ones. Terry's team were guests from Fatal Fury, Ralf and Clark's team were from Ikari Warriors, Athena's team was from Athena, Ryo's Team was from Art of Fighting, and so on. You could call it the earliest smash brothers style all star game line up game and it came out in 1994.

      I wasn't aware that Project Soul did advertise their guest characters that way - I know they have them, but then I never saw any of the adverts for any of the Soul games, so I wouldn't know how hyped up the guests are.
      The idea of not advertising the guests and/or hyping them, especially if said guest is a secret character as then there'd be a surprise if you got to them. It wouldn't last long, as it would soon be online once it's discovered and proven, but it would be a surprise for a while, at least.

    • @Ekraelum
      @Ekraelum 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MJN_SEIFER You're living under a rock, mate. Guests tend to take space in the covers of the games and promotional posters, this since IV. They're given their own trailers almost like telling people "hey! You know this character from an insanely popular franchise that everyone likes? Yes. They're in Soulcalibur. Buy my game p l e a s e" and it really upsets me. Basically telling us that Soulcalibur lost its own potential and is trying to find marketing somewhere else...
      [edit]: Ironically, when they don't do this is when they have guests from their own company (only time they did it was with Heihachi in II, but II had the balance of promoting the game and the guests equally, like, giving people good reason to buy the game aside from the guests). And VI has already 3 different guests trying to make people buy the game as much as possible. It's so sad to witness.

    It is great to see high quality (in 60 FPS!) playthrough about Toshinden's PC version. While I haven't played PC version myself, I always found it bit weird that it had Japanese OST and voices. Speaking of voices, some of the characters voices sound off, i.e. too low pitched like Kayin's and Duke's or slightly high pitched like Sofia's. Also the animation looks worse overall (Rungo's headbutt grab looks so awkward!).
    As for the Earthworm Jim, he's pretty hilarious pick for a secret character and I don't mind that; Playmates were still publishing Earthworm Jim games by that time. And they did publish BAT2 and BAT3 in USA, as well as the BAT1's PC port. I guess it was their decision to throw Earthworm Jim on the PC port, or at least the porting team (Digital Dialect) got a green light from them.

    Do you know what was different about the soundtrack between versions? I can't seem to find any details about this. I played a bit of the PS Classic version, and to me the music sounded the same as what's in this video. Were the tracks completely changed or something?

    • @Raivop
      @Raivop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Japanese version has different soundtrack, yeah. Only Sho, opening, character select and ending theme were untouched in west release.
      If I have to guess, I think Tamsoft redid the OST from SCEA's request, because the original OST sounded very synthesized and frankly not exciting compared to new OST which had extended tracks, guitar solos and generally had more going on.
      Or perhaps the Japanese OST was just generally rushed (I think this game came four weeks after PS1 was released in Japan) because some of the tracks kinda sound unfinished, like Duke's, so they touched it up for future releases. Oh well, regardless the reason, the redone OST is pretty much better in every way if you ask me.
