The Vienna Game Is NOT EASY

  • Episode 51 of the rapid rating climb sees a not so classic Vienna game with an early Na5 to go after my strong light squared bishop. I find these Vienna positions very difficult to navigate and this shows during the game - the post game analysis shows better ways to deal with these early Na5 Vienna positions but I was unaware of this during the game. If you play the Vienna Game / Vienna Gambit yourself, I would highly recommend checking lines involving Na5 and consider just dropping the bishop back to b3 rather than going for complicated dxc4 lines like I did in this particular Vienna position against my better judgement. I hope you find this enjoyable and educational!

    I agree about only playing older accounts since you feel more comfortable with them. I think in this game Black had several accurate moves in a lot of the positions so there was a high accuracy rate.

    Tough match, but I agree with your analysis that castling queen side was the end. Black gained the initiative and never lost it.

      Yup, I need to improve at these kind of positions and admit when I can't push for anything aggressive

      @@ChessCenturion Positional chess is the hardest part, but I'm hopeful with more repetitions I'll start to recognize the patterns.
      With your game I'm not sure it was obvious queenside castle was incorrect since pawn structure and pieces indicated a kingside attack. However, I guess your pieces were also on the kingside, so maybe that was reason enough to castle into more protection? It was shocking how quickly the pressure built on the queen side.

    • @ChessCenturion
      @ChessCenturion  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah but I now know in these structures that kingside Castle is the way to go unless I can see a concrete way for me to defend

    It's normal to get paranoid as there are a lot of cheaters although I don't think your opponent here was but I didn't check his other games. You can just look at GM Daniel Naroditsky's speed runs and how often he encounters cheaters in his rapid games. It's also funny when cheaters play like a machine during the middle game and then show poor technique converting massive advantage with instant moves in the endgame (playing themselves). Kinda the reason why people don't like playing rapid although blitz and bullet are totally cheatable too. Which is sad of course, as I love slower time controls both for playing and watching. It kinda seems to me that Lichess rapid has less cheaters but this is just what I've seen. Keep it up bro.

    When black goes for the very passive be7 in the opening there is just the usual vienna pawnbreak f4 for white, from there on white can treat it like the usual vienna gambit but if black declines, white can just play f5 and gets an insane center

      @@ChessCenturion g3, oops. I did not look too deeply since it looked to me like things were going downhill, but you showed a computer line that was equal. It's just I thought Nc1 was way too passive.
      Analysis: At 43:15 f5 threat e4 giving the bishop scope when it goes to f6 with check and b4 in there and Qa3+.
      and rook to c8. white is in a bind and probably getting mated by advancing the a pawn opening the rook file.

  • @eriksteffahn6172

    43:40 the difference is actually not that big objectively (the position is bad either way), but there are two significant differences once black gets in b4:
    1. the knight on c3 hangs with check, so you can't counterattack the knight on f6 (with g5) to either open the g-file or get Nd5 in a better version
    2. at some point black can win an important tempo with Qa3+

    • @eriksteffahn6172
      @eriksteffahn6172 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So the critical line after Kb1 is b5 cxb5 cxb5 g4 b4 g5 and then bxc3 gxf6 Bxf6 Rhg1 or Ne8 Nd5 Bxd5 Rxd5 and white is fine

    Something I've seen in a bunch of videos is that pposite castling means pawn storms and the first to make contact wins. So g4 g5 was probably a good idea.

    • @andremarques1088
      @andremarques1088 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      False actually. Not the first to make contact. But the first to arrive with the attack. It's different, because you can make contact but your opponent blocks or neutralizes your attack and now he is the one that is going to attack you..

      @@walterbrownstone8017 well... I took my info from GM .. are you a GM too? 🤣🤣
      Every position is different, and you make it seem like a cavemen attack , just throwing pawns at the opponent which is far from the truth, you have to defend sometimes when there is a real threat. you cant attack by just pushing pawns. First of all, if the center is not closed, it can open the position and all of sudden it backfires. Second of all, you have to put your pieces on good squares, like knight outposts and all. But of course if you open a file on the opponent's king most likely you will win because of the pressure.

    • @walterbrownstone8017
      @walterbrownstone8017 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andremarques1088 Pawn storm is attack. You are defending. You spend your time defending and you will never checkmate. It's really that simple. You want to pretend you're stockfish and you can make 5 move plans then of course you can win even if you mistakenly allow the opponent make first contact. No GM would ever dispute that in a tournament game you're in big trouble if you allow a pawn storm in an opposite side castling position.

    • @ChessCenturion
      @ChessCenturion  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I get both of your points, I was worried that even if g4 g5 lands then after Nd7 I didn't think I had any attack and moves like f6 might even turm it back on me

    • @Jiten-pm5lz
      @Jiten-pm5lz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ChessCenturion it is certainly possible because I have games at above 90 with no inaccuracies no mistakes misses or blunders. But the key differences are that because my positions are locked, my 'innaxuracies' are recorded as good moves instead. The one with the green tick in game review. This one is different and so was the other confirmed cheater. Time is a huge factor in tactical positions.
