OTB Chess is NOTHING Like Online Chess
Online chess is very different to over the board chess (OTB Chess) in many different ways. In today's video, I analyse an OTB chess game I played where the Jobava London system faces off against the Slav defense to outline some of the interesting differences and unique points of OTB chess (and classical chess for that matter) when compared to online chess. I hope you enjoy!

Perfect Opening, HORRIFIC Middlegame (thechessnerd Rapid Tournament Round 6)

Not gonna make it to chess master aye? 🥹
Surely Kramnik's position is a little bit more nuanced than that? I'm not a great chess player, maybe I don't get it.
Damn did your opponent find that?
Hi there! I’m a mere 1900 rapid online, I loved your insights on those moves cause it felt somewhat understandable. Your thought process was very clear and I think this type of content is actually the best for me cause seeing top gms games feels frustrating at times. Wish you the best of luck both in chess and in TH-cam! See ya
Thanks for the kind message man :) i wouldn't call 1900 "mere" though, that's damn impressive so keep it up! I hope my future and previous videos are useful to you
this is an observation i made as a teenager. i was a great OTB player but online chess always tripped me up. now in my 20s i play mostly online and i can hold my own with in person matches just because i have more experience than the people i'm playing on an old fashioned board but it's definitely a different pattern as far as my nervous system is concerned. i have to think more and that makes me slower
Yeah absolutely, it's way harder to play quickly OTB probably because the 2d and 3d models are so different mentally, I definitely prefer long format OTB personally tho and I'd say it's my best format
I dunno about OTB, but I get confused just by changing the chess board and pieces. As if I'm looking at a foreign language.
Haha I get u bro, I'd struggle with blitz OTB for that reason but in classical I feel like you just get used to it like 20 mins in, can always visualise it as 2d in ur head anyways
Definitely a good topic. You can do more videos detailing this topic and it would be interesting.
Yeah I definitely will mate, it's a topic I find rly interesting so don't you worry!
@ChessCenturion Interesting for me because I'll never compete. It's kinda like watching those guys that climb buildings with nothing but their fingers and toes. But not as scary.
Hahaha why wouldn't u compete tho?
@ChessCenturion 2 reasons. 1. I'm lazy. 2. I like to win. So I have the most fun when I beat easy players. It's kinda like going to the gym and only lifting 1/2 of your max weight. It still has effects long term, but it's more fun and I'm not going to tear my bicep.
I'd argue lifting 1/2 what u can do will achieve like 20% of the results of lifting 100% of what u can lift but that's just my opinion lol. I'd recommend giving like 1 OTB tourney a go to see how u like it
Good to have you back!
Good to be back :)
Less bicep more elo
I'm trying :'((
@ChessCenturion good sport
The physical helps elo.
How does English national chess rating compare to FIDE rating?

What a way to punish an early early queen attack!
D4 is a nice move in the opening
33rd to like 🤣
Nice thumbnail
Tournaments are better than ladder, i like them. Not sure about tournaments full of scrubs, like this one.
It’s called the Horrwitz Papa-Ticulat gambit 😮.
That knight ending worked pretty simple. I actually hate knight endings... usually hard to calculate out.
Against this one i usually dont take the pawn, and white doesnt havr actually that much!
I'd recommend watching this video th-cam.com/video/dIPzAj2e2bI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Beeev-TPe_EBhJKj as my opponent refuses the gambit and there's a very specific setup that I play if the gambit is refused :) hope this is useful
@@ChessCenturion oh but the video u sent has a mistake, it's not the french but the caro-kann!
Ahha technically yes but my opponent played in a Caro fashion. I have a playlist dedicated to this opening with lots more games where the gambit is declined too
I know why you are better at over the board format. Opponents look at you and think-this guy has so many hit points, it's gonna be hard to defeat him.
Hahahaha I genuinely think that plays a role in it tho, I literally wear tight clothing when I play for that reason 😂
this 1300 dude has 3,5 points now, which is insane.
Bro played an unreal tourney
First!
My mann
Okay to clear confusion - yes this is technically the Caro Kann but my opponent plays it in the French manner which means I play my gambit setup in a setup against the French - hence the title. Sorry for any confusion :)
Thats not the french buddy, change the title
check the pinned comment to clear confusion lol
Was the thumbnail satire lmfao
uhhh wdym lol
Thats the caro kann
sorry check the pinned comment bro
good vid and good explanations!! and love the frequent posting

umm why does title say french

playing without increment is just not good. the only place where its alright is bullet.
Not good for what? It's fun
@@virno69420 seaking from my experience no increment is horrible. getting a winning position and then losing on time doesnt feel good.
@@RedHammer813If you didnt consider your time usage the position wasn't actually winning. It sounds like you should play more without increment if you often find yourself losing on time to practice time management.
tbf I just suck at time management so I'm hoping no increment games will force me to think quicker when it gets to crunch time
At 3:58, you should have just gone w/the knight fork w/out all the overthinking. It's like the cliche movie line: "You should have killed me when you had the chance!"
Yeah true, I probably overcomplicated it but hey it made for an interesting game at least
No increment sucks. Why do people below 2500 play it?
I'm basically just tryna improve my time management with it rly
@@ChessCenturion Yea, everyone does that. Result is still the same-worse type o chess for everyone.
Haha tbf I'd agree w that
mad attack gg
Thanks man :)
It seems all of your opponents in this tourney played above their ratings.
Haha kinda does but maybe people just lock in when they're against higher rated players
Suggestion at 4:22. Put your dark-square B on f4; if BxB, then NxB, threatening mate in 1 (QxP on g2). Obviously, he'll put said pawn on g3, at which you will go N to e2, forking king & pawn (on d4). He can't take your N w/his Q b/c it's protected by your Q.
At 4:06 King Arthur: "What's your bishop like?" French knight illegally on English soil: "Oh, it's very, very nice."
Vid slaps as hard as the thumbnail
Truly a work of art 😎😂
Interesting. I've played this at 2100 ECF level in my league games, instead of Nge2 in the Opening I go Qe2 - no-one spots the strong ...Bg4 and everyone plays ...Bf5 which runs into h3! threatening g4. If they stop this with ...h5 then I go g3(engine line) to then play Bg2 and regain the pawn. I always get the pawn back and in general my next few moves are Nf3-Ne5-d4-f4 and I gain the upper hand in a middlegame. It's an interesting sideline of this gambit you might want to try :)
I feel like Bf4 would be kinda obvious? But I guess if not then yeah Qe2 Bf5 h3 is a really nice line, might have to try it online and see how people respond
@@ChessCenturion Yeah that's what I'd think too! Inexplicably I've played this 20ish times OTB, no-one has played Bg4. Also, everyone likes giving back the pawn with e6 - 1. e4 c6 2. b3 d5 3. Bb2 dxe4 4. Nc3 Nf6 5. Qe2 Bf5 6. h3 h5 7. g3 Nbd7 8. Bg2 Nc5 9. O-O-O has only been tried against me twice. It gets really hairy from here as after black has committed so much to defending this pawn I can try f3, gambit for development, and then try and take advantage of their misplaced pieces. Hope to see you try this, I'm interested to see what you think of it and how you fare with it :)
What tournament is this
Just a random chess.com Swiss tourney
The knight on f6 is hanging after he moves the bishop.
Sorry in which position?
@@ChessCenturion right after he castles and moves the black bishop.
This game made me want to overlook it if this is typical too blocked up
Hahaha depends how u play it mate

Rare Nihilus first comment 😎
The hippo is difficult to play but it is an option to confuse the opponent. When I am with the white pieces I have some issues against it.
Yeah it's tough because nobody really knows what's going on so it keeps things complicated and uncomfortable
Lol was catching up on your videos, and its nice to see that playing that horribly happens to anyone and when the pieces are down we start playing hope chess. Feels rough losing that bad, mightve gotten a bit of schadenfreude tho since it undoubtedly happens to me more.
Haha that's just chess (and notably a lack of increment for me lol) but u gotta get those losses out of the system somehow
At 8:90, I thought it was the alarm for the zombie apocalypse. If you have already zombie-proofed your room, no need to worry; just keep playing chess.
Perfect haircut. Anyway, Hippo is quite good against 1100 mmr, you convinced me.
Haha cheers bro, I think it's pretty underrated tbh

You are quickly becoming one of my favorite chesstubers. Nice, realistic, down to earth and great at explaining your thoughts. It’s such a pleasure following your journey.
Thank you man, great to have you here :)
After 5.Ng5 there is also the interesting 5...Bg4.
Is that a legit line?
At 4:38 I was yelling at you to force a queen trade by going to f2, but you didn’t hear me. Doing so would have forced him to take your queen, to which you would of course have responded by taking his with your knight. The unexpected benefit of such move is that it would have prevented his light-square bishop from putting you in check.
He can check before the queen trade
