- This delightful afternoon walk is around the beautiful area known as The Royal Albert Dock in the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, England. Opened and named after Albert Prince Consort, the husband of Queen Victoria in 1846, this complex of dock buildings and warehouses was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone and could allow ships carrying valuable cargo to be loaded and unloaded directly from the warehouses. During the Second World War the British Atlantic Fleet used the dock as a base for their ships and during the air raids on Liverpool the complex was damaged. After the war Albert Dock's future became unclear and in 1972 it finally closed. After a period of time standing derelict, redevelopment to turn it into a place to shop and dine out began and in 1984 the Albert Dock reopened. In 2018 it was granted a royal charter and had the "Royal" added to its title. The warehouses, 5 in total, are the biggest group of Grade I listed buildings anywhere in the UK. Today The Royal Albert Dock is the number one tourist attraction in Liverpool and with more than 4 million visitors a year it is the most visited multi use attraction in the United Kingdom outside of London. With its location on the waterfront and many cafes, bars, restaurants, shops and museums it is lovely to spend the day and walk around such a historic place, you can even see the famous Liver Building across from the complex!
