In this video, we will discuss how to set up and operate the Hanna Instruments HI98194 Portable Multiparameter Meter. This meter measures pH, ORP, EC/TDS, Salinity, DO, Pressure, and Temperature.
It features a backlit, graphic LCD that is easy to read even in low-lit areas. A combination of dedicated and soft keys allows easy operation. The powerful logging capability and digital probe make this multiparameter meter a great tool.

I've noticed that a lot of people are having the same problem with trying to calibrate the DO sensor and they are getting the reading "wrong standard". This happened to myself many times and it is very frustrating, I eventually figured out a work around which I think works very well. Instead of calibrating pH and conductivity first in quick calibration, skip these and immediately go straight to the DO calibration with the empty dry beaker beaker. The DO will calibrate within 1 minute because there are no droplets of pH/conductivity standard on the DO membrane as you have skipped these calibrations. When the DO has successfully calibrated, then go back and calibrate pH and conductivity and you are all set.
I'm not sure why DO isn't first on the list in quick calibration mode as once the DO membrane becomes wet from the pH/conductivity calibration solution, the calibration reading almost always returns "wrong standard", it even does in the video above if you watch closely. You will never be able to shake off every tiny droplet from the highly sensitive DO probe, it must be completely dry in order for DO to be calibrated in my experience. I'd be interested to hear if Hanna agree with my suggested approach to the DO calibration as many people are having problems with it as can be seen from the comments below.

The video also doesn't convey that you must gently swirl the probe whilst logging your results, otherwise the DO result will be wrong if there is no movement of water on the DO membrane when the logging occurs. If you simply rest the probe in the sample as is the case in the video, you won't get an accurate DO result. It would be good if a rep from Hanna could confirm if my proposed work around for the DO calibration problem is advisable or not.

@@dpark5070 well it says there should be no solution present when calibrating DO

    • @dpark5070

@@kyleyurkow1169 Yes I am aware of that. However, the video recommends that you should calibrate pH and conductivity first which does not work well for DO calibration in my experience. This results in a very low success rate when trying to calibrate DO in my experience. I've found that it is much better to calibrate DO first when there is zero moisture on the DO membrane that would otherwise be present if the pH and conductivity were to be calibrated first (which is what the video recommends but does not work well in the real world).
For those that get the "wrong standard" message for DO, try flicking the outside of the DO electrode with your finger to unlock air bubbles, this has worked well for me many times. Failing that, you can try to change the HI7042S electrolyte fill solution which can also help.

Thank you for your information and it is really useful. However, I got some problems while calibrating my instrument NANNA HI98194. I have done as same as you showed in the video and it is working for pH and conductivity meter and when it comes to DO it says the wrong standard. Therefore I would like to request to solve this problem, please.

I recently got this equipment and I'm having issues with the quick calibration. It keeps on saying wrong standard at the start of the calibration. I followed all the steps thoroughly and it's taking quite a while to stabilise. What should I do?

are you sure that i can do DO quick calibration like you did on the video?cause for me been trying for some time and its still reading wrong standard and i have following the instructions as given.
i have noted from the video when you were doing DO calibration it read wrong standard and you just said click confirm but i didnt see the meter reading confirm ,could it be that there is a confirm button to use despite the meter reading wrong standard.
and also how do i clean the probes especially for DO mine has already turned white due to waste deposits...

Hi, I am trying to do calibration and it just does not recognize the standard as good, I have followed the instructions for both the quick calibration and the single parameter calibration. For 100% it says that it is the wrong standard as it just reaches about 39%, for 0% it does not stabilize even after an hour, so the countdown never finishes. What can I do?

When I do quick calibration it gets to DO & then it says wrong standard what does it mean?

    • @HannaInc
      @HannaInc  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi nada. When doing the Quick Calibration, the solution you're using is calibrating pH & Conductivity with the same solution. When it gets to DO, you want to empty the beaker and shake off any remaining moisture on the probes. Then screw the empty beaker back onto the probe and wait for it to stabilize. Hope this helps!

@@nadamedhat The kit comes with the DO electrolyte solution. Before calibrating that sensor, it's best to rinse with some of that solution, and then fill the cap. Here is a step by step for your DO sensor. The D.O. probe is shipped dry. To prepare the sensor for use:
      • Remove the black & red plastic cap. This cap is used for shipping purposes only and can be thrown
      away.
      • Insert the supplied O-Ring in to the membrane cap.
      • Rinse the membrane with some electrolyte solution. Refill with clean electrolyte.
Gently tap the membrane cap to dislodge air bubbles. To avoid damaging the membrane, do not
touch it with your fingers or directly tap the membrane.
      • With the sensor facing down screw the membrane cap counterclockwise to the end of the threads.
      Some electrolyte will overflow.
      • Rinse outside of sensor with deionized water.
      • Invert sensor and inspect. There should be no bubbles or debris between the membrane and
      sensor body.
