Father was a homunculus that didn't require a philosophers stone until he wanted a body and immortality, the 7 sins were most likely fused with stones so that they were pretty much immortal. The stones are human souls and essence and a homunculus is a soul but the difference is they aren't fuel for the stone they are just contained within it like the flask.
