One very recognisable thing about dinner ladies is how Victoria Wood gave 80% of the funny lines to the other characters almost to her own detriment. You watch it and it seems like friends just having a great time entertaining the audience.
Such a melancholy song, fits the 'ordinary people getting on' theme of dinnerladies perfectly. Victoria Wood was such an excellent comedian and so underrated as a clever, witty woman.
temmychan completely underated. This song is a stunningly beautiful heart rending, thought provoking piece of utter genius. A song for the people performed by one of the people. Blessings.
@@richardharris4110 yes, some people don't see past the funny voices and hilariously monstrous characters. Right from the start she showed an unerring and light touch at pathos. The cross channel swimmer in "As seen on TV" is actually heart breaking when you think about it. For all her success, she never lost touch with or forgot about the ordinary people just getting on.
@@chrisparkes2179 Not having to be vulgar to be funny is a mark of true talent for me. "have you always been a bit thick Christine... or did you do an evening class?" Just one of many original lines..
Once again I find myself listening to this song and missing Victoria, when I watch this it feels as though this is how she actually feels about her own life, she separated from her husband not too long after this. It seems she had an intangible sadness she was trying hard to solve. Once again I know how she feels.
This song was going round in my head tonight (I had watched a re-run of Dinnerladies the other day) and I couldn’t get to sleep until I had heard it again. So subtle, so haunting. Victoria Wood was taken far too early. All that talent. She left an amazing legacy of songs, sketches and plays. Never to be forgotten.
This song resonates with me so much. I’ve not heard of Victoria Wood until after she passed & I was much older; but I find her to be very talented. Being in the US, I can only dream of what a life in the UK would be; but given the opportunity, I would be there in a heartbeat. It seems to be more meaningful, empathetic & peaceful than the US. For now, I’ll just dream.
This lady had so much amazing talent, fame never spoilt her it seems. One of those people who is a sad loss to this world now they are gone. I think dinnerladies showed how ordinary people are as important as anyone else on this planet.
This is a crackin song! It’s quietly beautiful & equally as devastating. We plod along not thinking. This is the line that caught my attention most of of all “ All the schemes that you knew time would bring to fruition, did they happen? Not so far, at least not to you, Makes one sit up and realise and realise that life is short & we must make a point of doing what we love. Beautiful words. what a national treasure we have lost, RIP lady xx
Fascinating to hear the theme from Dinnerladies with words. The series which was so funny, but addressed certain issues was a blast of fresh air. She had such a unique talent and is greatly missed xxx
Wonderful women, genius, I grew up in the late 80’s and 90’s watching her on Tv. True British icon, sadly no longer here but her work lives on. My daughter is 6 and she sits with me and watches “some parts” of dinnerladies, she likes the episode Christine
A truly under recognise British talent. Her songs never fail to give me goosebumps and on occasion the odd tear. When you really listen to what she is saying ,its normally about life's regrets and missed opportunities either though lack of faith or lack of for a better word bottle. Thanks to the uploader and thanks to Victoria Wood.
I feel so bad for only ever discovering her amazing genius so late in her career and not so long before she died. She was and still is an inspiration for so many.
She was One of our greatest all round entertainers , and writer of course... she could make you laugh so much it hurt, and she could tear your heart , sometimes almost at the same time, ..and from the hysterically funny ''The Ballad of Barry&Frida' to a poignant heart felt song about how life didn't give you what you planned or wished for, like this one, and what did she do with it? ..use it for a wonderful and funny comedy series theme song, she just knew it would work....genius... I loved her to bits, out of all the celebrities we lost over the last few years, her loss is the one I feel the most, R.I.P Victoria, your presence was a gift to us.
So not in line with Victoria's comedy work and yet so poignant, I love this song it speak volumes to me. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday...reminds me I have to fight every day for the life I wanted at 20. Thank you Victoria. Thank you. xx
The boxed dvd collection is my pride and joy,and I'd watch them all at least once a wek,but then that would be kinda sad, lol. But when I'm feeling like crap,on they go,blinds down, fone off and a huge sack of some snack or other,a bottle of rough red and hours of unadulterated bliss.Just that image of Petula Gordino, from the back, head hunched into her neck, waddling off & that bottom-belch emanating, lol, makes me roar! Oh,and,"I fell of a diving board in Guernsey" Absolute gems!
I LOVE this song. The words and the music (gorgeous!) are just beautiful ... I can listen forever. I am so very sad, but also extremely grateful to have learned about Victoria Wood (although ONLY just 3 months ago; I still can't believe it, I'm still so shocked!) and her genius, brilliancy, and overall beauty she brought to this world. Truly, an absolutely amazing (bonafido! ;-) )soul. Thank you Victoria Wood and please RIP!
Have to say it - Prince was the superstar, mourned by millions - maybe he didn't want to, but he never wrote words as insightful about ordinary people's lives as this.
Oh....this song is beautiful. I adored Victoria Wood so much and simply cannot believe she has left. Her unique talents were absolutely limitless. Every single day I laugh at something she's written or performed and that's a wonderful gift to have left behind. Quite simply one of the greatest artistes this country has ever produced.
I wish i could of met her just once. I grew up watching her and admiring her, knowing her best as brenn from dinnerladies. She was and always will be one on my biggest idols. Love you Victoria x
Beautifully moving song that with the programme and the writer will stand the test of time. Victoria is truly a inspiration and talented women and she has inspired me to carry on writing my comedy drama called "Welcome to Membury" which is set in a service station full of eccentric staff. I've played this tune over and over while I'm writing the scenes for my character's Pat & Lyn and I will carry on playing this tune over and over again.

Utterly amazing what I loved about Victoria Wood she had Talent of writing songs sketches of the ordinary person It could be the most mundane situation but she always found the humour and joy and light and empathy in that ordinary person and ordinary situation we deal with loss heartbreak excitement sadness I recently very recently just found out my partner and best friend died from overdose and Sadness has been more than I can describe in words but this song really helps me it’s so simple so beautiful we are all just human beings trying to find out what fits us in life we all want to be loved we want to have a career and enjoy it we want to have friends that love us and we love them, memories, reflection..life
She was so incredibly talented. Her melcancholy songs are my favourites, listen to A Better Day and If You Have a Dream for more like the dinner ladies song. I've been a life long fan of hers and Julie Walters. Still so gutted she died when she did, far too soon!
It's such a poignant song - all about the way we nearly all have to compromise and get to grips with the prosaic aspects of life. What happened to all our dreams and aspirations? Victoria Wood is superb in my view. Her humour is so enriched by her keen observations and the way she expresses them.

So much more than 'just a telly theme tune.' RIP Victoria. X
True, but to be fair, there are a great many 'telly tunes' that are wonderful compositions in their own right.
My father was a desert rat, and even he would've agreed that this is a masterpiece.
Underrated comment.

Victoria Wood, she was a lady who understood all the quirks and nuances of everyday life.
And also the sadness and the pain of everyday life, yet she still made us laugh. And for that, we all miss her deeply.
