My man effortlessly whipped up a face with some basic cuts. I wish I had that ability, he made it look so easy. Great video!

Thank you to the folks who coordinate and make this channel possible, and a special thank you to James for sharing his time and talent. It's wonderful to see the same traditions that my Grandparents enjoyed in Scandinavia then brought to Minnesota 100 years ago still alive and well in 2020.

semi new Ontario carver here, Love these videos they are all sooooo informational. One thing I would love is links to these carving classes and peoples websites in the descriptions. There is really no carving clubs near me so zoom classes would help out a bit.

I didn’t know about flat plane carving thanks for all those explanations but have still question what is the difference between caricature carving and flat plane carving? I thought I’m trying caricature carving :(

Hey Dogan! Caricature carving is a broad category of carving that includes flat-plane carving. Flat-plane carving is more of a specific "style" of carving. I've seen people use the term to describe any carvings with a focus on relatively large, flat knife facets, but when I talk about flat-plane carving, I'm usually talking about the style of carving that developed throughout Scandinavia in the 19th century. Carvings in this style have more in common than their flat facets; certain techniques, like specific ways to carve eyes, were also common among many such carvers. Less specifically, many such carvings focused on suggesting more with less. Instead of carving a v-line for each hair, for example, flat-plane carvers often use simpler yet clever techniques to create the effect of hair. For examples of carvings in the traditional flat-plane, I'd recommend looking up carvings by Axel Petersson Döderhultarn, the Trygg family of carvers, and the Gunnarson family of carvers.
