- Filmed on March 19, the first day of exhibition of Sumomo after she reunited with her family through a 9 month-long artificial nursing.
Baby gorilla Sumomo (female) was born on May 31 2022.
She had been nursed by the zoo staff since her Momoko's health condition was not good to take care of Sumomo.
Through a 9 month-long artificial nursing, Sumomo reunited with her family and has already had good relationships with the other gorillas.
Especially, her sister Komomo (Momoko's daughter) takes care of and held the baby in her arm. It looked like Komomo is Sumomo's foster mother.
Sumomo is really adorable, cute, and gorgeous.
I hope she will be loved by her family and everyone and grow up well.
I appreciate the staff of Ueno Zoo for always giving much love and raised baby Sumomo.

上野動物園の赤ちゃんゴリラ「スモモ」（♀）は2022年5月31日に父ハオコと母モモコの間で産まれました。
母モモコの体調不良により、スモモは産まれてから約9ヶ月間飼育員さんの手で育てられました。
人工哺育を経てスモモは2023年3月にハオコファミリーへ復帰しました。上野動物園公式によると、群れのほかのゴリラたちとも友好的な関係を築いており、スムーズに復帰ができたそうです。
特に、姉コモモは復帰前の顔合わせの時からいちばんスモモに興味を示していたこともあり、公開初日はずっとスモモを抱きかかえてお世話していました。
今後はコモモがスモモの姉＆育ての母として頑張ってくれるのでしょうか。
生で見るスモモは本当に可愛らしく、愛嬌ある仕草もたまらないです。
スモモが群れのゴリラたちやすべてのゴリラファンに愛されながらすくすく育っていくことを願っています。
上野動物園の飼育員さんには愛情深くスモモを育ててくださり、そしてその様子を定期的にTwitterやTH-camで公開してくださりありがとうございました。

@@marykelly2409 she is being supplemented by the bottle from near enough the start. Sure she was separated from mother momoko as mother was unwell. So the bottle feeding will continue by the keepers, as she was hand reared for 8 months. That's why baby was going nowhere near any of their nipples as she isn't used to that.

This is the gentlest Komomo has been with any of her baby siblings, I think she has decided that this is her mission in life now to care for her baby sister.

I can not stop watching Komomo. She is remarkable. The species, in general is remarkable, but she is amazing. Komomo knows what she has to step up and do, and she is awesome in displaying her maternal instincts.

I’m curious about Sumomo’s feedings ,too. Except for her attempt to nurse Komomo ( LOL) so funny. I noticed how healthy and alert she was . By the way, Good job Care Team.but Images of a feeding schedule would be appreciated. I enjoy these observational videos. Thanks.

Glad Komomo is keen on taking over-it should not have happened, it put both at risk.... but it did-and very glad it turned out as it did. Plus another female in Japan...this troop appears very stable... I will enjoy watching Su grow with this family😊

I am so happy Sumomo being back with mom and the rest of the family! It looked as if Komomo really loves her new baby sister, maybe it is good for her to get something to focus on and not doing her "hand thing", hopefully mom shares without them fighting over Su'. Baby Su' is going to be a spoiled little gorilla in the troop!

Applause! 👏 Komomo was chest beating the other day when she couldn't get to Sumomo in the other room. Now she has her baby sister, and is quite the caretaker. Sumomo is in good hands😊. 1:15 Look at that precious 💞 little face. I could just kiss that cute little nose.2:04 😂 I figured 💙 Haoko would be following. He loves his children. 4:50,7:25 Komomo is very protective over Sumomo, and the bond is already strong. Well Komomo will have to stay until Sumomo is a few years old 😊.

Komomo and Sumomo looks very natural together and I am very happy that Komomo has taken the role of child care. Komomo needed this baby and has been doing a great job. Momoka seems a little awkward with Sumomo and Momoka seems old and tired. Good job for Komomo to take over.

Komomo looks so relaxed, she's almost stopped holding her ear! How wonderful for them all: Momoko gets help raising the baby, Komomo has something to focus on and help her hone her mothering skills, Sumomo has a whole troop that wants to take care of her, Haoko gets another baby to kidnap, and we get to watch and enjoy it all! ❤❤❤

Komomo said your my baby now! But then Momoko said, nope, she’s mine and now she has her real mom and her big sister surrogate mom. She’s so loved. And even playing with dads toes and sharing his food recently. She’s an incredible little independent baby but loves her naps with her mommy still.

Estou muito contente que a Sumomo está com a família, Komomo tem um instinto maternal aflorado, vai ser uma excelente mãe, não só dá irmã, mas quando ela tiver o seus filhos, a Sumomo parece muito com o Kintaro e o Riki, afinal são todos familiares, não vejo a hora do Haoko pegar a Sumomo é sair correndo 😂 e muito bonitinho ele fazendo isso, estou tão contente, estou emocionada, amo essas famílias ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I would like to know what plan, project, the zoo has for Ricky and his sisters.

That's up to the GAIN committee (they coordinate all zoo gorillas by health and family genetics) and the host zoo. For example. Momotaro and Gentaro belong to Chiba Zoo, not Kyoto City Zoo. In Japan the biggest issue is that the family lines are so interconnected. Right now the only unrelated females in Japan to Gentaro are Ai and Annie of the Shabani group. Plus world wide there is a shortage of 🦍 females. Hope this info helps.

How do they handle milk time? Does she go to Momoko and/or the keepers for milk? I know when Freddy took over the care of Kayembe, she actually started lactating at age 40+! Since Komomo is young is there a possibility that she will start lactating?

So mom doesn't want to take care of her or it's just how it is...I hope mom can't have anymore children she's not healthy enough...if komomo can foster a child she's ready to have her own family...
