No snorkel? No snorkeling. The diving knife goes in the inside of your foot, not on the outside, that way you can reach it with any hand in case of emergency. Never dive alone.

I remember in the 90s we were told to not take with us a stone, or a shea shell, nothing and everything was protected, well in 2018 mases of stones from the cliffs are being torn down by men making seals not have much room to hang by the rocks. It was very sad to see the island that was once so protected now going under so much destruction.

remember when it was $35 round trip . in the winter you'd definitely want to be inside its freezing out on deck . worth noting the Garibaldi is the California state fish . also some amazing camping on other parts of the island by permission only private farmlands ,, the diving and fishing is on a different level away from the tourist

NEVER dive next to the Casino due to all the pollution. Instead, dive on the back of the island, or much further north of Avalon, or further out on a boat.

We used to own one of those cute little cottages in Catalina, and we frequently took our skipjack or Wailer from marina del Ray to Catalina with the family. Best snorkeling is at emerald bay, just a short boat ride from Avalon. Twin harbors is cool also.

I enjoyed watching your adventure to Catalina. Diving there was very similar to how the La Jolla Cove and Children’s pool were the the early 80’s before they allowed the seals and Sea lions to take it over. All those same creatures were there, even the big Bass, as it was a preserve. No longer tho.

When I was a teen I went snorkeling for the first time in Catalina and all I remember was cold water, dark water, algae, lots of algae going down idk how far down, and it would freak me out swimming in it because it would touch our bodies. Not a great experience, not a lot of fish that I can remember. I did see Plankton under a microscope and petted baby sharks so that was nice.

My wife and I went to Catalina to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. We had a great time - including a bus tour of the island. We even ate lunch at the airport! However, we did not anticipate the high winds in the afternoon. Our scheduled boat ride back to Dana Point was cancelled due to the high choppy water. We returned to our hotel and they had a room available. So, we got to enjoy another night on Catalina. 8-)

We went down about 110' on the wall. Sadly a couple passed away from overreacting. Not a place for anyone who overreacts. Nice video. A dive knife isn’t needed for Giant Kelp. You can fold it in half and it will snap, you can bite it and you can simply pull it out.
The trick is to stay calm, assess the situation and determine the best course of action. A knife on your calf does increase entanglements inside or out (I wear mine inside when freediving, and it does sometimes catch some kelp). Best bet is to have a pocket for it added to your wetsuit from someone like Otter Bay Wetsuits.

Please think about how your video will increase tourism in Catalina and degrade the experience for visitors and locals. I suggest that you share all the things you did there...but please do not tell people where you were. Imagine hundreds of visitors sharing that little campground or divers invading the pristine dive spots you enjoyed.

Catalina tries to keep Catalina as it was 1000 years ago. Water is always in short supply and many tropical plants are not suited to the natural, semi-arid Channel Islands. There are no water pipes coming from the mainland. Invasive plants and animals are a constant battle.

The silence was amazing. So glad to see that Campus by the Sea is still in operation.

@@davidross703 So many videos with excessive “Excitement”…”Im so excited!!!” etc. etc. but i found the video and you just fine. I got a sense of personality…very focused video without a bunch of extra. You’re enthusiasm came through when you were narrating the underwater critters. Thrill seekers and adrenaline junkies have plenty to choose from. Maybe they weren’t paying close attention. Also, again you were focused on making a quick how to rather than a vicarious vacation pic. ; different types of video. Also putting the cooking in a separate video was helpful. With so much to watch and so little time i think your approach will be popular. You can always do another about your take on things, personality or “Catalina so much fun” or whatever. As I’ve gotten older I’ve mellowed..it isn’t a lack of personality it is just “Chill” as the youngins say.
