I’m glad there’s people out there that realize 5 is great. Even if it’s not perfect, there’s so many good things about this game. I feel like the characters are better than ever; their interactions, arcs, and motives (dreams) are great. Shinada alone is a great character and addition. The combat is great as well, and personally, the best in the series. There’s so many mini games and things to do that you could get lost for hours. But above all, I like that the stakes have never been higher. Because it’s not just a threat against an organization Kiryu was once apart of; the threat is against Haruka, the girl Kiryu has been raising since she was nine. This games great, and despite some of its flaws, I still think it’s the best. Not just simply for everything listed above, but because I really love the message the game portrays.
Yeah, i had a mixed experience the first time i played 5 because i played right after 3 and 4 in the remaster colection so i was already a little burned out when i started and i ended up ruining the game for myself because of this. I have been replaying it again a year later and taking my time and i am having a blast
To me Park feels like one of those characters the story wants you to think is a great person when they're actually not. To me she came off manipulative as if she was living vicariously through Haruka.
Yeah definitely, Park was easily one of the worst characters in 5. Aside from acting like a mother figure to Haruka, every sentence I can use to describe her sounds like I'm describing a villian.

I can agree with the sentiment of feeling that 'fire' again with 5 like I felt with Zero, to me 5 feels like RGGS magnus opus, even more so when you consider that it came in 2012, three years before Zero. Something that I always find funny is that Shinada became my second favorite character of Yakuza, I remember vividly the first time I entered the chapter as him thinking that I'd not like him, but towards the end, I loved him, kinda sad we are never likely to hear from him again but at least in my head cannon, he is one of the few with a happy ending. Nice video as always!
Yakuza 5 is my favourite yakuza game and one of the best games ever made IMO, it is hugely under appreciated in the grand scheme of things, yakuza is such an incredible series, but 5 is an unforgettable experience
I agree with that, although I often go back and forth with 5 and 0. Both games are fantastic, but I like them for different reasons, as 0 is a great entry point, but 5 works off of Yakuza's past games in a way that no other game in the series does. I think they both deserve the top spot to be honest.
Bravo sir 👏 excellent video! Yakuza 5 is without a doubt my favorite just behind Zero. These video essays I watch around utube do it so much justice. One thing I’ll add about the Aizawa fight is how downright cathartic it is. Obviously the song reflects that, the guitar rift gives me goosebumps everytime. One of the best final boss themes ever. But after a 70 hour playthrough of hard work ploughing thru all the main and side content, substories, side stories and minigames alike, the game grants you the ultimate send-off. “Here’s one last meathead with 10 healthbars, go crazy and end it off with a bang” Never has a game given me psychological relief than when I gave that last punch to Koi-boi 2.0. I don’t know how they do it, but RGG can make absolute banger finales.
I never thought of it like that, but now that I think about it, you're right, Aizawa is the perfect cut loose kind of boss that a game with this much content needs.
I honestly loved Y5, great retrospective for sure, it's very odd how I ended up liking some aspects of 5 more than I did 0 and I enjoyed Haruka's part a lot given that I do like rhythm games and I just felt like it was something new and refreshing to take it slow from all the fighting from previous chapters!

love this game, also one of my favs from the kiryu saga. when i finished it i didnt even know there was a mixed reception about it cause i really loved it. love these analysis vids. whats kinda ironic about shinada tho is that once you master his combat you can absolutely humilate enemies so tbh hes really good in both facets

Idk, i kinda like Shinada’s moveset, i love using the tackle, and, along with his weapons, he is probably the character that can more Heat actions the quickest, as i find it quite easy to fill the heat meter with him.
It's been a while since I played 5, so I'll take your word for it about Shinada's heat. And yeah Shinada's moveset is fine I just like the other 3 better.
25:15 the Tanimura VA allegations didn't come out until after 5 had already released, the more likely reason he was cut was either due to not wanting to pay for the rights to his face again (similar to the current situation with Judgement), or because they just wanted to make a brand new fighting style to use.
granted this series isn't exactly known for carrying characters from game to game, given Sayama from 2, the remaining Ryudo family from 3, and Shinada being COMPLETELY absent in 6 despite the baseball minigame (which was a shit decision in general, even Tanimura got a mention before the Amon fights)

Man 5, such a great game I actually think its tied with 0 as my favorite honestly every fight was enjoyable although I do think they did akiyama a bit dirty by getting rid of his version pf tiger drop this game was amazing and so was the video on to 6
Oh yeah man 5 is fantastic in just about every way. And yeah Akiyama losing tiger drop sucks, but he gained aerial raves which to me at least makes up for the nerf. I hope you enjoy your time in 6.
I played mgsv first in the series was addicted to it Then I played 3 thought it was a bit better but nothing major Played 1 & 2 thought 2 was pretty good 1 was kinda medicore BUT THEN I played mgs4 The story was great gameplay was great. Made me love solid snake and hurted to see him in that much pain and the ending was amazing
Yeah that's the unfortunate thing about playing the series in reverse order, MGS 1 is a marvel of the time it was created in. No other game played like it or had it's narrative chops but now even outside its own series it doesn't hold up to other people's standards. I like it a lot but that's because it was the first game in the series I played. Other than that I for the most part share similar opinions except for 4 and 5. 4 isn't as great on multiple playthroughs and 5 I just haven't finished yet.
Yeah I can see why people dont like 4 on multiple playthroughs I just love the story that much and the ending to all the characters (expect raiden) so I dont really mind the heavy usage of cutscenes but could have used more gameplay to make it more replayable @@riku582

The order I played the games so far was 0, 7, Judgment, FotNS: Lost Paradise, Lost Judgment, Kiwami, 3 Remastered, 4 Remastered and now 5 Remastered (while watching playthroughs of Kenzan, Kurohyo, and Dead Souls). I hope to get Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 6 later.

Honestly, Yakuza 5 is a case of death by a thousand cuts for me. There are just so many small issues I get constantly bombarded with, some from the story, some from the jump to a new engine they weren't sure how to use yet, a lot from the side content, that I just can't bring myself to have a good time playing this game. As soon as I start feeling good, I accidentally use Dragon King Essence when I was saving it for a boss, or Saejima gets another dose of image training, or Akiyama got heat and now I can't use that running-triple-kick, or Shinada runs into the fourth enemy group in a row down a crowded street when I'm in a hurry. I want so badly to see it as the masterpiece everyone else seems to, but I am simply incapable. But that's part of why I like watching videos like these so much, seeing others have a good time in places where I can't reminds me that a game I can't have fun with still brings joy to other people. And at the very least, we can agree that Shinada, for as little as he appears in the series, shone way brighter than you'd expect someone who started as simply the Tanimura replacement to ever shine. And Louge of Love is fantastic.
Sorry to hear all of that, but I can understand where you're coming from. When I look back at the game, I can easily see myself having the issues you described as they are a bit awkward to implement seeing as this is the only game that really needs them. Glad I could provide a different perspective.
Yakuza 5 is a good game but a lot of people like myself disliked Haruka's speech at the end. It basically destroys everyones efforts up to that point. Akiyama, T-set, all of her colleages in DynaChair and most specially Kiryu. The writers did everyone dirty when they decided to end the game like this.
I really miss this Kiwami2' Haruka that didn't want to be an artist. Why an inteligent and experienced girl like her would enjoy to dance and sing crossdressed as an anime character instead of... I don't know... been an astronaut?
I can't wait to see how you feel about 6, 7, dead souls (can be emulated perfectly fine on PC, js) the judgement spin offs, I'd love to see you play the ones set in the times of the Samurai (because I can't remember their names 🤣, also emulator friendly) and for shits and gigs the hilariously explosive First of the North Star

Hey whats the music at like 6:02? Also I just wanna explain Aizawa. Story wise, yeah. He def needed like 10 minutes of more screen time. Even 5 would do. But in terms of the game's themes? Hes perfect. He may be a nepo baby, but he denies being chairman until he beats the legendary Dragon of Dojima himself. Aizawa believes in raw talent and strength only, and he doesnt think people should just have things handed to them, like his dad (ironic cause his dad is handing him a very big thing). But Aizawa proves his hypocrisy, by choosing to fight kiryu despite of his wounds. He even steps back for a second, but chooses to fight him anyway. He chose to pray on the "weak", where a Dragon like kiryu only fights the strong and for others. Kiryu opposes Aizawa's dream and wants to show him that hard work also pays. Like someone else said, kiryu's qtes show him guiding aizawa away from the chairman's seat, as he isn't ready for it yet. Aizawa's willingness to fight someone wounded shows that he isn't ready yet. Kiryu shows him this, and he says he will still be there the next time when he thinks hes ready. Now I'm not too good at explaining things and a lot of people sold Aizawa's character better, but I still wanted to share this. Hes one of my favorite antagonist's in the series after all.
Focus on tech upgrades for Kiryu first until you get the 4th upgrade. Also remember, you can choose not to use a heat action when hitting triangle holding down R2. Other than that, you should be fine.
5 is a very mixed bag for me, and people may be surprised when I say that I prefer Yakuza 3, which most people consider the worst title. Much like 6, it's a mix of incredible ideas that make a world of difference, and incredible ideas that are very poorly implemented, some to the point that I reckon they shouldn't have even been there to begin with. It's a great game to play, but I feel that it falls victim to its own ambition, both in terms of scale and breadth of narrative, and its insistence on a message that frankly doesn't make sense to me whatsoever, and doesn't feel appropriate. Park isn't a good person, and she targeted Kiryu's own doubts and fears so that she could try to live out her own fantasy through Haruka, whom I should stress didn't seem very fond of the idea whatsoever. But for the climax of the story is just that, an all-time peak that was riveting experience that had me anxious throughout the entire thing, even if it began to make little sense to me the next day. That's what I'm willing to overlook, though. Overall, I reckon the plot could have been much tighter while still delivering the emotional impact they wanted, and that the scale could have been toned down a bit to make for a much less tiring experience that more effectively spreads time between our protagonists. If they'd really made this thing watertight, then it would easily be one of my favourites, but it sadly has too many holes to really shine in my eyes.
I’m not gonna sugarcoat it, I didn’t like this game. The one thing that stuck with me after finishing the game was Shinada because his entire story actually made me a fan of baseball.
Just started this shit and still enjoing need 4 speed dynamics... when I`'ve realized I kind of HATE Kiryu. I've started to hate him ocassionlly after that discusting attitud towards Majima's stabing at the docks in Kiwami... and since then, my resentiment grows bigger in every game. Passing all the clan responsabilities to Daigo looked like a smart move at the beguining , but forcing Goro to babysit him and give up upon all his freedom, only to be free himself to leave and raise his new kids in Okinawa... was ugly... And what for? Princess Daigo Peach allways will need his guidance, and Goro is again someone elses dog on a leash. But this... this nonesense, here!! Al least the excuse to leave his friends behind was the f**k childs horde at Okinawa! But what is the point of forcing himself to live alone and tormented in Fukuoka, when he could return to his place and make much more money there. Pointless.... all the suffering at this point only reminds me that Kyriu is is a fuking airhead
Please god make al future encounters static, or make it so you can run away like in Kiwami 2.. I am so sick of constantly getting dragged into random inescapable fights. Saejima's city felt like it was happening every half a block you would walk, it's just tedious and annoying I would rather play 20 more mandatory rhythm battles than that garbage.
This game was hit and miss for me. Kiryu's story kept my interest because I wanted know what happened between him and Haruka. I was enjoying Saejima's at first but then it hit the mountain village filler arc which killed my engagement so much that I stopped playing the game for 3 months. Haruka and Akiyama's section was the my highlight and a breath of fresh air. Shinada was the weakest protagonist out of any Yakuza game and I honestly just had to Google his name as I was typing this because of how forgettable he was. Fortunately the finale more than made up for any grievances I had with the game and even gave Shinada a great moment. Overall I'd probably rank it 4th out of the 7 games I've played so far.

I have. I won't say what I think of it in comparison to the others, but it's good.
Honestly, Yakuza 5 is a case of death by a thousand cuts for me. There are just so many small issues I get constantly bombarded with, some from the story, some from the jump to a new engine they weren't sure how to use yet, a lot from the side content, that I just can't bring myself to have a good time playing this game. As soon as I start feeling good, I accidentally use Dragon King Essence when I was saving it for a boss, or Saejima gets another dose of image training, or Akiyama got heat and now I can't use that running-triple-kick, or Shinada runs into the fourth enemy group in a row down a crowded street when I'm in a hurry. I want so badly to see it as the masterpiece everyone else seems to, but I am simply incapable. But that's part of why I like watching videos like these so much, seeing others have a good time in places where I can't reminds me that a game I can't have fun with still brings joy to other people. And at the very least, we can agree that Shinada, for as little as he appears in the series, shone way brighter than you'd expect someone who started as simply the Tanimura replacement to ever shine. And Louge of Love is fantastic.
Sorry to hear all of that, but I can understand where you're coming from. When I look back at the game, I can easily see myself having the issues you described as they are a bit awkward to implement seeing as this is the only game that really needs them. Glad I could provide a different perspective.
Yakuza 5 is a good game but a lot of people like myself disliked Haruka's speech at the end. It basically destroys everyones efforts up to that point. Akiyama, T-set, all of her colleages in DynaChair and most specially Kiryu. The writers did everyone dirty when they decided to end the game like this.

Also I just wanna explain Aizawa. Story wise, yeah. He def needed like 10 minutes of more screen time. Even 5 would do. But in terms of the game's themes? Hes perfect. He may be a nepo baby, but he denies being chairman until he beats the legendary Dragon of Dojima himself. Aizawa believes in raw talent and strength only, and he doesnt think people should just have things handed to them, like his dad (ironic cause his dad is handing him a very big thing). But Aizawa proves his hypocrisy, by choosing to fight kiryu despite of his wounds. He even steps back for a second, but chooses to fight him anyway. He chose to pray on the "weak", where a Dragon like kiryu only fights the strong and for others. Kiryu opposes Aizawa's dream and wants to show him that hard work also pays. Like someone else said, kiryu's qtes show him guiding aizawa away from the chairman's seat, as he isn't ready for it yet. Aizawa's willingness to fight someone wounded shows that he isn't ready yet. Kiryu shows him this, and he says he will still be there the next time when he thinks hes ready. Now I'm not too good at explaining things and a lot of people sold Aizawa's character better, but I still wanted to share this. Hes one of my favorite antagonist's in the series after all.

Focus on tech upgrades for Kiryu first until you get the 4th upgrade. Also remember, you can choose not to use a heat action when hitting triangle holding down R2. Other than that, you should be fine.
For me Lost Judgment is the best Yakuza game.

5 is a very mixed bag for me, and people may be surprised when I say that I prefer Yakuza 3, which most people consider the worst title. Much like 6, it's a mix of incredible ideas that make a world of difference, and incredible ideas that are very poorly implemented, some to the point that I reckon they shouldn't have even been there to begin with. It's a great game to play, but I feel that it falls victim to its own ambition, both in terms of scale and breadth of narrative, and its insistence on a message that frankly doesn't make sense to me whatsoever, and doesn't feel appropriate. Park isn't a good person, and she targeted Kiryu's own doubts and fears so that she could try to live out her own fantasy through Haruka, whom I should stress didn't seem very fond of the idea whatsoever. But for the climax of the story is just that, an all-time peak that was riveting experience that had me anxious throughout the entire thing, even if it began to make little sense to me the next day. That's what I'm willing to overlook, though. Overall, I reckon the plot could have been much tighter while still delivering the emotional impact they wanted, and that the scale could have been toned down a bit to make for a much less tiring experience that more effectively spreads time between our protagonists. If they'd really made this thing watertight, then it would easily be one of my favourites, but it sadly has too many holes to really shine in my eyes.
I’m not gonna sugarcoat it, I didn’t like this game. The one thing that stuck with me after finishing the game was Shinada because his entire story actually made me a fan of baseball.
Just started this shit and still enjoing need 4 speed dynamics... when I`'ve realized I kind of HATE Kiryu. I've started to hate him ocassionlly after that discusting attitud towards Majima's stabing at the docks in Kiwami... and since then, my resentiment grows bigger in every game.
Passing all the clan responsabilities to Daigo looked like a smart move at the beguining , but forcing Goro to babysit him and give up upon all his freedom, only to be free himself to leave and raise his new kids in Okinawa... was ugly...
And what for? Princess Daigo Peach allways will need his guidance, and Goro is again someone elses dog on a leash.
But this... this nonesense, here!! Al least the excuse to leave his friends behind was the f**k childs horde at Okinawa! But what is the point of forcing himself to live alone and tormented in Fukuoka, when he could return to his place and make much more money there. Pointless.... all the suffering at this point only reminds me that Kyriu is is a fuking airhead
And yes! This game is great, I am only capable to love or hate really well written characters

Please god make al future encounters static, or make it so you can run away like in Kiwami 2.. I am so sick of constantly getting dragged into random inescapable fights. Saejima's city felt like it was happening every half a block you would walk, it's just tedious and annoying
I would rather play 20 more mandatory rhythm battles than that garbage.
Finished this game like a month ago and I got say the final boss is Top Tier

This game was hit and miss for me. Kiryu's story kept my interest because I wanted know what happened between him and Haruka. I was enjoying Saejima's at first but then it hit the mountain village filler arc which killed my engagement so much that I stopped playing the game for 3 months. Haruka and Akiyama's section was the my highlight and a breath of fresh air. Shinada was the weakest protagonist out of any Yakuza game and I honestly just had to Google his name as I was typing this because of how forgettable he was. Fortunately the finale more than made up for any grievances I had with the game and even gave Shinada a great moment. Overall I'd probably rank it 4th out of the 7 games I've played so far.
