- A WORD OF CAUTION
When it comes to GM coolant ONLY USE AC DELCO COOLANT (DEX-COOL). If you mix GM Dexcool coolant with standard coolant (Prestone) it can gel in your motor and then you're screwed. There are DEX-COOL compatible options out there but for the few bucks you might save, in my opinion, it's not worth the risk.
Step by step on how to perform a coolant flush and replacement on a 2016 GMC Canyon/Colorado.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO NOTE:
This procedure and measurements apply to model year 2015 -2016 Colorado Canyon motors with the LFX 3.6L V6.
After performing this flush i found there was some discrepancy on cooling system capacity. The owners manual states 12.5L capacity (Canada), GM dealer confirmed that but the internet machine says 14L. Check your owners manual
As far as mixture is concerns, 50/50 will give you freezing protection down to -35 F.
Good Luck!

Thanks Steve. I have 198,000 km on my 2016 canyon, v6. I just sprung a leak in the lower rad hose. Apparently this hose is discontinued. At least for my shops here in BC Canada. Found a supplier online. Will need to order from there. Thanks for the video I will be draining a filling my coolant soon. The leak was actually on the hard plastic hose piece directly adjacent to the serpentine belt.
Thanks Steve for a great video! I appreciate it. Getting ready to change the coolant on my 2017 Colorado, 3.6 V6. I only have 25,000 miles on it (I'm retired) but since it's now 6 years old, thought I better do it. Got some test strips to check the original stuff that's in there. Glad I did because WOW !!! The PH is all the way down to 5.0, very acidic. The freeze protection is still minus 35 degrees F, and the color is still looking new. But the test strips prove that coolant does become acidic even with low mileage and visually it looks fine. Acidic coolant will destroy heater cores, radiator cores, cause corrosion of block coolant passages, etc. Normally with good coolant, the PH should be up around 8 or 9. Thanks again for all your videos! Cheers from Oklahoma City.
People are being sensitive about the music, I could hear everything you were saying. Very informative, thank you.
I always just undo the bottom hose and let it quick drain, which also insures any larger clumps of stuff in coolant makes it all out too. When I flush, I put in some white vinegar and dish soap, to neutralize calcium that might be in the system, and the detergent helps also to loosen up the skummy stuff. I then drive it around 20-30 miles and then drain it, flush water through, then coolant, and finally air bleed the manifold coolant area.
So after watching your video I decided to flush the coolant in my 2015 Canyon and more important check those oil cooler lines after seeing how corroded your were. Thankfully we don't have problems with icy roads here in south Louisiana and no salt to eat the underside of vehicles. Mine looked practically brand new and that was a relief. But the funny thing is I found a Cyclops Maxxeon magnetic light probably left by the mechanic that changed my a/c compressor about three years ago.
HA! That’s hilarious. Those lights sure can hang on for a long time in there.
Thanks for the video. Just did a 2x flush after stocking up with distilled water.
196k km! nice! Folks think these trucks don't last. I have a '17 diesel and am changing coolant too. You should post how these trucks keep going.
236,000KM so far. It has taken me, my wife and our dog from coast to coast camping in the back, towed drift cars, sled trailers, dump trailers and boats all over and NEVER let me down. Will be doing a longevity video at some point. There are some things that are starting to show their age but overall an unbelievably reliable well built truck.
@SteveDoesStuff89 has your head unit survived? Touch screen on mine died pretty early on in the vehicles life but I haven't bothered to replace it.
The shop did my coolant flush as i don't like working on stuff and id have to do it on side of road outside in rain. I bought 2 jugs of the acdelco dexcool concentrated coolant but they only used 1 jug?
Hey thanks for the video, I was wondering what type of travel trailer were you towing ? I have a 3.6 16 colorado towing about 4800 lbs. I was wondering how you did towing in the mountains. WE have a couple of trips planned for this summer. New york and PA. Thanks Mike
Glad it could help. I don’t think I have ever towed a travel trailer with this but i regularly tow an open car trailer with my drift car on it. Total weight roughly 5,000 (ish) pounds plus 1,000 lbs of gear. No mountains around here where I tow but I had found at speed this has very good trans cooling. I’d be keeping an eye on the temps for sure but at speed I have found them to be fine. Stop and go in town with a lot of weight is where I find it gets hot fast.
How about to check the coolant for a leak?
I noticed gauges metric. Are you in Canada?
Yessir
It would be better to drain the coolant slightly on a down slope with your vehicle and opposite when filling
Apparently there is a hose clamp that fails. Mine went at 95k km at 5 years on my 2018
You say your towing 6000lb at 100k. Can I ask what rpm your running ? Same truck and I tow 4500 @ 3000 rpm at 100k
Depends really. If I am driving 90 - 100 I leave it in 5th. Probably 2600 rpm roughly
How did you berp it
Jacked up the side of the truck with the pressure tank, filled it and then just squeezed the upper rad hoes repeatedly until air stopped burping into the tank. Once that was stable and coolant at a good level, I started it, heat on full blast and let it come to temp with cap on tank.

You say you've got a 60/40 mix. Is that 60% water and 40% coolant, or is it 60% coolant and 40% water.
In cold canada we use 60 coolant 40 water.
How much does it come out every time u open the petcock?
I would say i got about 7 - 8 litres
About 6.5 came out of mine
I took the spoiler off of my 2016 Colorado 4 years ago and nothing changed as far as temps go. All the BS from the keyboard warriors simply isn't true. I can reach the oil drain bolt without jacking up the truck plus it just looks better.
Idk man, I noticed a difference in my trans temps. About 10 - 15 degrees C. Loaded or unloaded.
Please next time do not play such irritating music, keep it quiet so we can hear you and at the same time not to punished by that stupid music. Thank you.
