It would've been interesting if both Dorne and the North had held out against the Targaryens. The northerners might have eventually got a sweet deal like house Martell. Also, a man wonders if fire dragons setting the north ablaze would've woken the ice dragons.
It would have been even easier to resist the dragons in the north. Armies have to march farther and the climate could be even worse than that of Dorne. It would be like the Vietnam war in westeroes.
+Jeff Ralston targaryens woulnd't have been able to conquer the vale and the north just like dorne resisted. because the neck will blockade every army no matter how big or small even if dragons burnt everything in the neck it will have no effect because its all swamp and the cranongmen use poison darts which is similar to how the dornish killed meraxes the dragon of rhaenys targaryen. the vale also would block every army but not sure how they wld kill a dragon
+SantomPh wrong the cranogman would utterly kill the targaryens. they specialize in guireilla tactics. only reason the north lost was because they marched south to face the targaryens and was hence out of the neck their main defense
SantomPh thats where your're wrong. aegons army would never make it past the neck. and his dragons would die from the cold. and also winterfell cant melt its made of ice magic same as the wall.
i know im asking randomly but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I somehow lost the login password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
I dunno, I think this is overstating it. If he had kept Karstark a hostage (with the understanding to the rest of his lords that he'll face his justice at a later date) I doubt they would have left him. But executing Karstark guaranteed halving his forces. Or a sizable chunk if not half. But yeah, Cat's the worst. All of this bullshit ultimately falls back on her.
I'm a Northerner of England and Westeros being very like England I can say that the attitudes and views of the northerners and southerners in Westeros are similar to real life England. Although things like 'guest right' are obviously medieval inspired, it's more the general attitude. The North Remembers.
what does catelyn know of winter? in the show shes a bit older, might have seen one or two small winters, but in the book she was just barely a woman living in Riverrun during the last winter. She knows nothing, it is known
+Altorin She's talking about more than "winter" in her advice to Jeyne. Hardships will come. Differences will occur. You won't always understand each other. Patience. Understanding. Love. That is how you will weather those winters/storms/differences.
Thanks for the video! Another big difference has to do with their religion. The faith of the old gods that the North follows is less formal then the faith of the seven. There are no septons or religious gatherings. No religious books.
Robb's reasoning behind executing Lord Karstark is yet another major detail not included in the television series. The tradition that the North remembers was a two-edged sword. Robb had to lay down the law or he'd lose even more of his bannermen, but the Karstarks surely won't forgive such a slight. I came away from Stannis learning that the Karstarks were now throwing their full support to the Boltons disgusted that they could be so vindictive. From watching this video, it sure puts everything in perspective now.
How do you think they keep the glass houses from being buried losing the precious little winter light? They might even break under the weight of the winter snows. Hot springs de-icing system, Super steep roof, Hodor with a broom?
Ser Ponce is actual Elias daughters kittens son. There's an old angry black tom cat. Who prowls the red keep, angrly sticking it to Lannisters. Clawed Joffery good a few times. Stole Tywin's dinner once or more. An attacks and kills ravens.
A Northman (North-women) in Dorne or a Dornishmen (Dornish-women) in the North is a horrible idea. One would complain about the heat and the other would complain about the cold
Another great job, Rawrist... Your commentary and supplemental vids /graphics are very enjoyable even if some are to known to viewer/reader. Your obvious rehearsed efforts and thought out are pleasant for this fan and others. Keep it coming... I got a question based on your text/show research and general knowledge of ASOIF and GOT, what historical peoples/geographic grouping would you say closest resembles GRRM's North characteristics in general...Scotland? Northern Russia?
Hi! Really good video! I was wondering if you were planning on doing a video on the position of women in Game of Thrones? On the one hand you have daughters being married off like its nothing, but then you have places like house Bear Island that have women fighters. I find it really interesting, since it's supposed to be a medieval society and (in the show at least) female characters are gaining power. Great video! x
Pretty sure Bear Island only does that because of the Iron Islanders and their constant invasions. It became a necessity. But still very cool. The North and Dorne are my faves.
thanks for the video :-) I so hope the Starks get some pay back in the next book. To me, its looking a very good bet. so Can't wait. Still have your video to feed my illness
Robb never felt quite right to me, the thing i love about GRRM's work is that every character feels very real and different, but Robb never had much of a personality beyond being Ned Stark Junior.
It looks like there's a face on the map of the North. Cape Kraken is the chin, and stoney shore is the nose. The little lake is an eye, and the river between them is the mouth.
Can you please make a video on the history of the golden empire of Yi Ti, there are no videos dedicated to it and i feel it deserves at least one and i think you could give it justice, pleasssssssssssssssssssssssse.
could Robb's Execution of Lord Karstark be considered kinslaying? as House Karstark has been seprate from House Stark for some time now and would only be very distantly related to the Starks as of 300 AC
+wiremu caldwell I doubt it. I think kinslaying mainly refers to direct relatives. Cousins appear to be fair game if the show's canon is to be believed (or literally only Jaime knows he murdered his own cousin back in S2). There would have to be some kind of logical cut-off point where kinslaying dropped off. Otherwise you could go back far enough and claim everyone is related to everyone else, like how everyone in Europe is related to Charlemagne.
I am currently reading Storm of Swords, and all of you references , or most, are from Catlyn's perspective which I just finished reading, like an hour ago ...who knew..?
Always wondered what happened to the other Starks. Where's Ned's cousins. What happened to the branches of the Stark Family who still have Stark as a family name.
Great video! Hey, I posted two links in your last north video regarding that deleted scene picture about Brandon Statk and Aerys. Did you ever get those posts? I don't see them in the comments anymore.
It's real........ Trust me. Did you look at the still photo? Now you're gonna make me dig up the article where I found about this aren't you. When was Ned ever in distress while the iron throne was in the background??? You can clearly tell that the actor [brandon] is bloody and severely distressed whilst in the throne room. Look this up, I'm telling you it was cut from the pilot. It was when Dan and Dave McFucko's decided not to do flashbacks, then did flashbacks.
No way......no prank. It was cut from the pilot to stay away from 'flashbacks'. They obviously changed their minds regarding this subject. They had a different Dany in the beginning too, but changed her out....... Sadly.

so we just comment to be entered in the giveaway? .. I would like to commend you on these video series you have done. I first got into "A song of Ice and Fire" thru GoT. .but quickly grew to love the books by far, and as I wait for "Winds of Winter" and season 6..your videos give me my Westeros fix;-) thank you !
The part about elderly members of society to claim they go hunting is also known from Greenlandic communities, mostly 50 or more years past, but it is a thing. To sacrifice yourself for younger and fertile members of society to survive. It is probably known from other cultures as well, but the Greenlandic I know for sure.
The answer to that is more complicated than you'd expect. Basically it boils down to where the bastard is raised during their earliest years. For example, Jon Snow was born in either the Vale or Dorne, but goes by Snow because he was raised in the North, rather than Stone or Sand. Robert's first bastard Mya Stone is another good example. Despite her father being lord of the Stormlands at the time of her birth she keeps the name for a noble bastard of the Vale, where she lives.
+GerSanRiv Start a debate on one of the videos. Or write something like, "Catelyn Stark is my favorite character" and roll with it. Boom! Tons of comments :)
God I love the North. Whenever i'm reading or watching anything related to ASOIAF i'm reading it as a north lord in a gruff voice.
It would've been interesting if both Dorne and the North had held out against the Targaryens. The northerners might have eventually got a sweet deal like house Martell.
Also, a man wonders if fire dragons setting the north ablaze would've woken the ice dragons.
Oh now that would have been awesome. Word is Ice dragons are much bigger and take no crap. They also are like Gammera and befirend little kids.
It would have been even easier to resist the dragons in the north. Armies have to march farther and the climate could be even worse than that of Dorne. It would be like the Vietnam war in westeroes.

"I don't feel like hunting today guys, but you know who loves hunting? My wife." Haha
+Steve French That was amazing and I regret not thinking of this joke. goo.gl/YsyGi3
Yea, that's an old favorite of mine. : )
i know im asking randomly but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..?

@Kane Jaxxon instablaster :)
Thank you for the video. People who say Robb was an idiot for executing Rickard Karstark should watch this.
I dunno, I think this is overstating it. If he had kept Karstark a hostage (with the understanding to the rest of his lords that he'll face his justice at a later date) I doubt they would have left him. But executing Karstark guaranteed halving his forces. Or a sizable chunk if not half.

Good history lesson. And this is why the Wolves will return with a vengeance.
I would love a video on Guest rite and the southern equivlent. :)
the north remembers while the south just sorta moves on or doesn't care
Great video! I am really enjoying this North series as much as the Dorne one. Best 2 regions in Westeros!
Please do a guest rights video. Loved the end screan.
+TraciPeteyforlife Enough people have asked, so I will! Now I have to find where to fit it in.
Your channel is by far my favorite on TH-cam!
+ace tilley :D
Awesome video- this gives me more perspective on Ned's reaction to Jaime killing King Aerys based on the guest rights tradition/Rat cook story
9:40 i need to find that gif on tumblr

Yeah as bad as a desicion was for Robb to execute Karstark, I rather prefer him over the guys who flay and torture people as part of their traditions.
Another Brilliant Video...Your work...Your note to detail, love it
Westeros: *does something*
The North and Dorne: DID I ASK YOU A DAMN THING!?!??!!?!?!?
Winning a poster would be pretty cool
thanks! always looking forward to your videos!

+Rawrist Guess I'll.... make 3 700 accounts then.
I really love your reviews!
+Tonn Donaldo Thank you :)
How do you think they keep the glass houses from being buried losing the precious little winter light?
They might even break under the weight of the winter snows.
Hot springs de-icing system, Super steep roof, Hodor with a broom?
Ser Pounce is actually the Rat cook
Ser Ponce is actual Elias daughters kittens son. There's an old angry black tom cat. Who prowls the red keep, angrly sticking it to Lannisters. Clawed Joffery good a few times. Stole Tywin's dinner once or more. An attacks and kills ravens.
your videos are always great :)
Please please please do a guest rite video!
I think your videos are very informative and I enjoy them very much. thank you for all your effort
I love your vids, you're the best GoT related TH-camr ever :)
I would love to see a North person marry a Dornish person
Ayra and Ned Dayne? lol
+Kim Collins 👍👍👍
snow and sand
A Northman (North-women) in Dorne or a Dornishmen (Dornish-women) in the North is a horrible idea. One would complain about the heat and the other would complain about the cold
great stuff, thank you!
@Rawrist I am loving all your videos, especially the north-related ones! could you do the video on the guest right please? kind regards :)
As always, excellent and informative.
Thank you for this!
Another awesome video! I look forward to these all week!

I so hope the Starks get some pay back in the next book. To me, its looking a very good bet. so Can't wait. Still have your video to feed my illness
ur channel is AWESOME! definitely a lot of information here, other channels haven't got! :-D
+katie kennington Aww, thanks :)
Sigh.. although Robb Stark got on my nerves every now and then, I'm curious how the story would have played out if he were still alive.
Robb never felt quite right to me, the thing i love about GRRM's work is that every character feels very real and different, but Robb never had much of a personality beyond being Ned Stark Junior.
please make the video about guest right, it seems pretty interesting : )
Really good videos! Keep up the good work! :)
SRSLY ROBB!!!!
I lold at that XD
+Aditya Sawant I love Roose's eyes and eyebrows. They say so much.
A guest right video would be wonderful
Very comprehensive!
The north remembers.
It looks like there's a face on the map of the North. Cape Kraken is the chin, and stoney shore is the nose. The little lake is an eye, and the river between them is the mouth.
I'm also interested in making videos. May I ask what program(s) you use to produce these?
Would you do a theory of how the name stark was founded?
How many more videos will you do about the north?
thanks
Can you please make a video on the history of the golden empire of Yi Ti, there are no videos dedicated to it and i feel it deserves at least one and i think you could give it justice, pleasssssssssssssssssssssssse.

I keep wondering with all the similarities betwen The North and Dorne is there a "secret history" that we're yet unaware off?
Great video. :-)
+1st508th Airborne Thank you :)
The North's costume is kinda like an old England or Scotland keep their old ways and despite the advancement needed to progress.
GUEST RIGHT VIDEO!!!please.
can you do a video on blood raven please?
Was the purple wedding also a violation of guest right?
Great video! Hey, I posted two links in your last north video regarding that deleted scene picture about Brandon Statk and Aerys. Did you ever get those posts? I don't see them in the comments anymore.
+Brett Baratheon I saw them and I can still see them on the video. The actor looked just like Sean Bean. Are you sure it wasn't a prank?

I really liked the video
Great video also flaying and the right of the first night still practiced by the Boltons were ancient traditions of the North.
The Northerners are badass!
so we just comment to be entered in the giveaway? .. I would like to commend you on these video series you have done. The part about elderly members of society to claim they go hunting is also known from Greenlandic communities, mostly 50 or more years past, but it is a thing. To sacrifice yourself for younger and fertile members of society to survive.
It is probably known from other cultures as well, but the Greenlandic I know for sure.
Instead of going into the woods to die they should join the nights watch that way they can live, serve the north, and no longer burden their families.
I wonder what would be the name used to designated someone who has a Dornish and a Northern parent
+Redem10 Their father's name unless their a Bastard, if that is the case then where their from.
dornish culture is still patrilineal. hence Arianna Martell being Arianna Martell.
The answer to that is more complicated than you'd expect. Basically it boils down to where the bastard is raised during their earliest years. +50ftFrankenstein You're right I should have said Where there name day was.
Wedding !!
Yay!!!!
Please oh please a house manderly video. Wymen reminds me of a cross between king triton from the little mermaid and Santa Claus. You know I am right.
+vanzetti1927 Lol, they will get their own video but not until November
The North is the best kingdom in Westeros.
