- Most visitors to the National Gallery come to look at the paintings. But in this behind-the-scenes look at the work of the Gallery’s Framing Department, the richness and importance of the collection’s frames is revealed.
A fascinating insight into recent conservation work and historic frame purchases with the National Gallery’s Head of Framing, Peter Schade, and Vivmar Curatorial Assistant, Harriet O’Neill.
I have always wanted to see a doco on Baroque (mainly) framing? I have been to a few European book stores and there is an extreme lack of information on the subject? I want to know who made them, where and was there a master who taught the rest, was there a famous school??? For me the frame, in a lot of instances is more important than the painting. They and their makers deserve recognition!
Marvellous. I'm staggered though by how little exposure your wonderful videos seem to get. Does no one know you're THE NATIONAL GALLERY??!?!? Thank you for sharing this tidbit of insight into frames.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account??

The National Gallery runs a course every week on Stories of Art. It has felt a great privilege to have had both these lovely chaps address us as part of it. Sign up if you can!

@3:25 : What happens to the reproduction after the frame has undergone work from the Framing Department?
Fabulous video
A few years ago, in a museum shop in Florence, I passed up a chance to buy a book about frames. Regretted it ever since.
So do you know what that book was called?
@@Neil-Aspinall unfortunately no 🧐
Salvador mundi on the background 😅
I would not want that nightmare hanging on a wall at home, regardless of the framing.
0:07 NOT a good look for Alice Cooper
What a difference. The frame replacement looks so much better...
Hey I’d like to use some of the frames for my paining👍🏼
