How nice to see the Schwebebahn featured here! It is a great solution to the problem of transport along a narrow valley, which would probably never be implemented nowadays. It does have its problems though. At the moment it's only working at weekends because of design errors on the roller wheels of the new wagons. And a couple of years ago a bit of the electrically conducting rail fell off and landed on the (luckily unoccupied) passenger seat of a cabriolet which was passing underneath. I'd recommend anyone coming to Wuppertal to travel the length of the Schwebebahn. The new wagons have panorama windows at the back.

Wuppertal did not exist at 1901, the time, the "Schwebebahn" was build. There were only villages like Elberfeld or Barmen at that time, as you can see in the colorized movie of 1902 - the ride did go from Vohwinkel to Elberfeld, a rich city at that time. Wuppertal was founded in 1930.

Reminds me of the proposed George Bennie ‘Railplane’ system that was proposed in Glasgow in the 1930s. The front engine was powered by electricity and had an open propeller at the front. The carriage body was streamlined similar to an aeroplane. He proposed that the system could travel at a speed up to 120 miles per hour. Bennie started to build his system outside Glasgow (at Milngavie) however, he could not get the investment that was required and eventually the system was scrapped.

@@ILucaII There are various ways to have trains pass by each other even on a single rail without any issues. But with the cars being this short, simply making it a single rail loop does seem to be the easiest way. That the train faces the other direction after leaving the end stations might really be just a side effect from this system instead of a goal.

Yora but there are over 30 cars on this rail. Do you really think it’s easier to manage them on one rail than just have a loop.

No offense to the channel owner but the German half of me really thinks this needed a narrator with a German accent.

Did you know that a flying train is German slang for going number 2? The more you know, eh ?

Brilliant but inconceivably inefficient, expensive, wasteful ugly and potentially a nightmare to maintain like an obscene Jules Berne or H G Wells fictional invention.

Don't you mean Jules Verne? Anyhow, I like how it can traverse water ways.

No, sorry the construction is highly efficient and is used by 80000 per day. It costs much less than a subway. And everyone, who is born there, loves it and never wants to miss the beautiful construction over the river. But I agree, there are Problems with the new build cars, it is always a problem, if you use a system wich is unique in the world. And at least, it is a very safe system. Only one accident, with 5 dead people, in 120 Years.
