  • Welcome to Ep 011 of the rebuild series, temporarily delivered to you from Cyprus!
In today's episode, I start to strip Rolima of most of her upper-deck fittings, remove the boom, and temporarily seal up the holes. The curiosity of the integrity of Rolima's rudder got the better of me, so I cut away several sections to expose the inners, and it's not good news. It looks like it's going to have to be a full rebuild!

I like the way you are documenting the renovation, including footage of the basic stuff. Despite the core of the rudder gone the fibreglass looked in very good condition. That bodes well for the rest of the hull hopefully.

Thank you for that Michael, its nice to see your following along. For the next episode (whenever that will be) I want to try to narrate in real-time, rather than in post. I think it will give me the ability to explain and show what I'm doing right there in the moment, hopefully giving more information and detail to the videos.

Bad move removing the reefing lines without using pull through lines. You should have left them in the boom and used them to replace the old with new if required. Use the old ones for a guide for lengths. You can't rebuild a boat with a claw hammer, a crappy screwdriver and a throw-away cutting disc. If you had taken the time to remove the entire face of the rudder you would be able to use the skin when you rebuild the rudder.

Unfortunately I'm a (pretty new) dinghy sailor so I can't be of much help with any keel boat advice. Please keep documenting this, I'm interested in seeing where you'll go with this!

As long as you are subscribed, you'll be able to follow along as I continue with the renovation. It might take some time, but I can't wait for the day that she's back in the water

@@sailingrolima oh I’ll bet! I got my laser super recently for free (I’d previously sailed them at sailing school) and it’s such a joy to have a boat, even though it’s already gonna be a money pit (no such thing as a free boat!)

I got Rolima for a really good deal (like a REALLY good deal), but boats always cost a lot of money. I’m doing her up to keep, not to sell and I know if I were to do her up to a good standard, I would make a lot of money. However, if I was to sell her, I would struggle to find a boat that is as attractive as she is.
