Kaiju no Kami Reviews - Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (2003) Series

- In 2003 Toei hired Gingaman, Timeranger, and Kamen Rider Ryuki writer Yasuko Kobayashi to do a live action adaptation of Sailor Moon, simply titled Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. Due to poor ratings, the Dark Kingdom arc was the only arc to be adapted this way. Did the series deserve to continue beyond its first story or was one season enough? Watch to find out.

Toei missed a good opportunity to crossover this series with super sentai I would love to see that
I'm sure if Sailor Moon had been done today there would have been more crossover episodes than episodes revolving around the actual Sailor Moon plot.
Well at least the final 2 episodes were able to fit in a bit of season 4, crazy clowns in an evil circus.
As much as this live action series has its flaws, I would still love to see Viz Media try to localize this series for English release and keep all Japanese language with english subtitles.
At least it is never as worse as what the American Live Action versions was going to be under DIC's supervision.
Yeah, despite it's flaws, I wouldn't mind if Viz released it as I probably would still buy it to support it.
It would've been nice if they made 5 seasons worth of sailor moon with all the story arcs. If they wanted [for some seasons] they could have the generals be LIKE a monster of the week X5. [to save costs in production]
I think Crystal has shown why having the generals be monsters of the week like the manga is a bad idea.
Ah but Bioman has taught us that it could work. [and or] just add fewer monsters and later have a show down with the generals. Though that depends on the direction of an adaption.

i agree with you with minako It's a shame, because I understand what they wanted to do, they tried to make them more deep and realistic but ended up being boring and uninteresting.
Usagi and Minako's relationship in the anime was practically two sisters who are on the same page like two drops of water or like Makoto could be so in love or that older sister image.Until now, it is the anime of the 90s that has best known how to develop the personalities, friendship, brotherhood and camaraderie that distinguishes the sailor senshis.

Yeah, the 90s anime had a lot of issues, but it was easily the best of the franchise when it came to character development.

I am a pretty big tokusatsu fan, and I am curious about this show even if it would be my first Sailor Moon series. Overall, since I am interested in Sailor Moon and I am already on a good toku kick, this would be a solid watch I think. I am concerned about lackluster fight scenes.
I do think it is definitely worth giving it a try. At worst, you don't like it and move to something else. At best, you end up enjoying it and decide to dive into the anime. Wait... maybe that's the worst because then you're hooked forever... :-D

I know The store appears twice in the show and I wanted to grow both times. In fact, if I had thought about it while I was filming my review, I would have done some type of joke like that.

Sailor Luna?
Well that is one thing that this Live Action Adaptation already does that the Anime and Crystal does not do.
I am guessing that the Live Action version was only expected to run for just one season, so if they were not going to have Chibi-usa I am thinking they decided to have Sailor Luna instead.
I must say that is an interesting take, how about Sailor Artimes, a young boy in a sailor outfit similar to how 1910 English boys were wearing in their upper class schools back more than 100 years ago.
I did find it weird that they gave Luna a human form but not Artemis.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Also, the fact that Luna's human form was a little girl. It was just to attract young girls to the show,........well, more of them anyway. Who knows, maybe it was a fill in for Chibiusa.

I don't know it's exact location, but it has been used in my shows. Dora Sphinx fought the Zyurangers there. Kabuki Boy in Dairanger had his show there that the Gorma Triumverate watched.
I saw the whole thing a few years back and it was cute. This was before watching Sentai but I still think it's a show you need to go in with a sense of fun and kawaii. But I do agree that it gets slow during the middle to end. The major problem though is they were taking a non-toku show and trying to make it toku while keeping to the spirit of the original material. It'd be like if Sentai did a season based off Godzilla but didn't quite know how to make it match the toku style.
Well I kind of have to disagree with you on one aspect as the original Sailor Moon anime was totally a Toku show in anime form. However, unlike this live show, it took its time to develop the characters before throwing in another guardian. Also, poor Jadeite is always reduced to being a nobody. lol
A Sentai show based on Godzilla though... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
Kaiju no Kami I kind of meant it differently: Magical Girl is a type of toku but has its own tropes and rules while toku like Sentai and Kamen Rider have their own common tropes and rules. Pretty much the live action Sailor Moon was using some of the other rules instead of the Magical Girl ones but at the same time still using them. It's like how the recent Mummy movie was trying to blend horror and action but failed at the horror/didn't blend quite how it should. Anyway they were trying to make Sailor Moon in a similar fashion to other live action toku but didn't quite hit the marks of hitting the Magical Girl side of it so it's stuck in this weird middle ground of girl/boy toku.
But despite my feelings on that aspect I still enjoy this version of Sailor Moon since she was both my first anime and my first toku, discounting ameritoku.
I did like how the characters were developed as well, especially Ami. When you mentioned the mittens all I could think was 'Weren't those supposed to be a symbol of friendship and her cutting them represented that she wasn't Usagi's friend anymore' though I'm not sure if you did catch that meaning or not.
Oh yeah, I did catch that, but it was fun to really mock at how "evil" that was.
Kaiju no Kami well when you consider how Usagi is breaking a symbol of friendship is far worse than killing someone or kicking a puppy.
I know, but again, it made for an easy joke. :-p
the costumes were not the best looked like cosplay 28:41 makes me miss Toys R us. I did like how the heavenly kings survive tho I wish they let them get into relationships with the sailor guardians the plushie thing for luna and artimus was weird tho I guess with the budget all this was all they could do and a few things they did felt half ass

Yeah, the effects haven't aged well in the slightest.
But it makes sense after seeing anime where kids are able to pass off their interdimensional creature friends as plushies in public: What would that look like live? Just plushies moving around!

Where'd you hear about poor ratings? Was the show ever meant to continue for a second year? I figured they only planned on the one year, and that's why they mixed in elements of later Sailor Moon stories. I did hear it got preempted near the end, though, so they were probably expecting an episode 50, and that's why the ending was a little rushed.
Poor ratings were from reports after the show aired. I'm not sure what the plan was, but the booklets that came with my DVDs originally listed the season as being 13 volumes only to be cut down to 12 and then the two specials were added.
At least I thought I heard stories about the very first Pretty Cure series drawing more kids' attention than this one at the time, not that I can find sources now... XD
They had to cut a an episode or something...I vaguely remember some type of show that had more importance than PGSM, so it was shown instead, making PGSM forced to cut an episode or two at the end. So that's why the end feels so rushed. It was never meant to go past season 1. I'm sure the toy sales were good, as the entire world was ordering the toys. I myself got every one of them and I live in the states.

I would have to agree on your opinion about the monsters in the series. Not the best designs from Tamotsu Shinohara. The Sword and Shield monsters in the Finale special were leagues better.

I think the upcoming Ultraman R/B is the 26th live action series featuring at least one or more Ultra's. It depends on whether you count the Retsudens or not.

Sailor Dream is one of my favorite Sailor Openings.
And yeah, the CGI and effects are certainly dated and the ballet style fighting was an interesting choice.

Have you heard of My Hero Academia? It is a good show with problematic tones, animation have weird moments, and certain characters being either defeatist like Deku or hatable like Mei Hatsume.
I have, but I haven't watched it. I'm going to wait until the whole series is completed before I bother.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I’m 2 episodes in and I gotta say that I do like the more Tokusatsu elements of the show, mainly with the monsters. I like they’re they’re people in costumes rather then CGI abominations. Granted most of them are CGI, but thankfully not as much. Many of the costumes look pretty nice, though because these monsters are people in costumes I kept expecting a Kamen Rider to come in and help the Sailor Scouts. This was 2003 so this was when Kamen Rider was still using that VERY rough looking early digital film camera style, so every time a monster appeared I kept expecting Kamen Rider Faiz to appear or something since he was the most recent Rider at that time.
lol This series had a lot of good ideas bogged by bad execution.

2. Dark Sailor Mercury
3. Sailor Luna - I don't know, all I can say she is the better 6th Ranger Sailor Senshi than Sailor Chibi Moon (I guess)
Dislike:
1. The way the senshi doing a CQC is so freaking BORING and STUPID. I blamed the director for the bad decision making.
2. The monster of the week are suck due to lack of personality
3. The villains are flat
4. The senshi's ribbon is very too big, blame the designer for it
5. The way they do the sexy pose like you are in a pageant during before and after the fight is kinda annoy for me
6. Artemis and Luna staff toy - I feel that the show itself is a stage show more than a actual show
Overall: The show was okay not my cup of tea. They did their best but they trying too hard for it. Some episode were pain to watch and messy world building.
Yeah, like I said, the show had a lot of ambition without the budget to meet those ambitions.
