      @@dukeofmtb I actually learning about the downside to a linkage driven single pivot bike without the rotating caliper bracket like on the trek bikes. I have never ridden a bike like that before. Then again the revel rail should be in the same category as this bike and I really hated that bike ( there I said it ) most other bikes that I have tried are horst link bikes.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@s14tat Yup, it's an inherent thing with single pivots. The suspension locks up when braking. Four bar/horst link and it's other varients don't have that problem. The main advantage of a single pivot vs more complex designs is durability, reliability, and predictable suspension response. But these days, the difference is negligible. I guess I just gotta stay off the brakes. 😅

      @@dukeofmtb that's everyone's goal, ride with as little brake as possible.

    Great review! So much more in-depth and real. As newer rider I was looking at this bike for my 2nd ride, but am thinking it may not be the right one. Also thanks for explaining the different types of rear Suspension pivot. I didn’t even know this was a thing. Thanks again!

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks. If most of your riding is descents with just some gravel grinds to the top, then this is the bike for you. Awful bike for technical climbs though. This is a descenders trail bike. Perfect for what I like to do. I'm not usually interested in being the fastest to the top or clearing technical climbs. I might do it here and there, but I ride for the descents. I'm loving the bike though, especially now that I got it pretty dialed.

  • @Coerced
    @Coerced 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Every review I read or hear about this bike is only semi positive and still people love the bike. The very long front end requiring huge weight shifts to maintain frontwheel traction... the heft of the bike, the very short top tube folding your body when on flat terrain, the locked up suspension while braking (which to me seems to be THE scenario in which you want active sus), the brakes + dropper + tires commencal totally cheaped out on...
    All this and still people love it - and to be honest, it's such a perfect looking bike I keep coming back to pictures and fantasies of it myself. Who would you honestly recommend this to over other modern bikes? Is the durability the main selling point to you?
    BTW: I forgot to thank you for a very informative and honest video. It's refreshing not to only hear the buyer's bias speak ;)

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think folks are just trying to be honest so there are no surprises when you decide to buy the bike. Every bike has certain aspects that aren't 100%.
      The long reach requiring a change of ride style isn't a con, I just want to make sure someone thinking about buying the bike is aware of it.
      The top tube length is perfect. I never feel folded over when seated. If you do, your saddle is slammed too far forward.
      The heft of the bike is a positive for descending. It gives you more stability. It's just worth mentioning for the weight weenies. It's definitely much more durable than the average bike though.
      The brakes and front tire are really the only weak points.
      The suspension stiffening up when braking is hardly an issue either. I've gone through crazy long rock garden type sections just fine(I just have to be more aware of my braking zones).
      These are all just things worth mentioning to folks that either come from a lycra clad xc background(so they might be weight weenies), coming from an older bike(they lean back too far and aren't used to riding a bike with modern geo), or people that aren't familiar with the characteristics of a single pivot.
      All in all, it IS a great bike. I have no regrets. Once you swing your leg over this thing, you'll love it too.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you do all the work on your bike yourself and want an easy to maintain bike with modern geo that will last forever. This is the bike for you. I would buy a bike with this exact geo again, without a doubt.

    As someone on an XL frame with a bikeyoke 213mm dropper, I'm so jealous of you being on a medium with that level of drop. I wish I could get 250. You might want to pick up a spare OneUp dropper cartridge... literally everyone I know with one has had them fail within a year or two (self inlcuded twice over, hence going to bike yoke)

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been pretty lucky so far. OneUp droppers on 4 bikes. Also had it on my old Remedy. I just keep them clean and regularly regrease them. If it does happen, it's a pretty easy fix. Thanks for the tip though. And yes...I'm so happy to have all that drop. I have a 210 on my hardtail too, and it feels like an oversized DJ when the saddle is down. I love it. 😁

    • @davidgrothen3943
      @davidgrothen3943 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidgrothen3943 That's why I like OneUp. They work great, and if one fails, they're pretty cheap to fix or just replace. You can recoup cost from buying a new one by selling the old one for $75 to $100 to someone on a budget, and just let the buyer know it needs a new cartridge.

    Great review, learned a lot about single pivots. Do you think Magura have too much bite? After moving to 29er would you go back to 27.5? Currently on 27 and debating on my next bike.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! It depends on the pads you use, rotor size, and wheel size(rotational mass). You can tune it up to a certain degree. For the most part, the bite is somewhere between Saints and Codes. Not as sudden and jarring as Shimano, but not as gradual as Sram. But the overall max power is definitely more than either those.
      In regard to wheel size. I wouldn't mind going back to 27.5, but I'm also only 5'9. I wish there were more mullet options. I like the roll over of 29ers, but getting occasionaly buzzed in the bum isn't fun. If I was taller, then I'd probably just stick to 29ers since I really enjoy straight-line plowing through chunk, and a 29er makes it less likely for the wheels to get caught up on something.

      Glad you found the video interesting. For the most part, I like using my Meta hardtail for all the local SE Michigan stuff. It's also an aggressive hardtail like yours. I do occasionally take the TR to DTE though, or to go session some lesser known spots. But for the most part, I use the TR for out of town trips (Copper Harbor, Pisgah, etc) and for the bike park. I would have used it to go to Blue Mountain in Ontario on the weekends, but it seems they're closing their bike park down for good. So bummed about that news. 😢

      @@gianneng1501 You can go ahead and switch bikes. A more aggressive bike will give you more confidence and they're built stronger for jumps and drops. A slacker head angle can save you from an OTB if you mess up. XC bikes aren't as forgiving.
      We actually aren't that great at jumps. We don't always clear them but we keep trying. Drops are a bit easier. The TR, because of the suspension, will be better in technical stuff and at the bike park, but not so much for bike packing.
      Although the HT is a very capable hardtail, it'll be rough on a lot more technical stuff or on bigger features at the bike park. Of the two bikes, the HT would probably be better for bike packing.
      If you don't ride anything too crazy, the HT isn't a bad choice, but a full suspension bike is still going to be more comfortable and faster on the descents.

    Nice and good luck with it. Good deal for 4 grand with the Factory suspension, thats usually on the top tier bikes double that $$$. Speaking of pedal kickback my 2018 Spectral had that and it was common but with my 2019 Instinct BC i really cant say i ever had it even though i rode much rougher trails on the RM.
    I am starting to miss not having a bike now but the Spectral LTD is ALWAYS sold out and new RM top tier is about 8 grand or more and not really sure if i want a 160 travel bike or lighter w less travel. I would hate to spend 7 grand on something as specific as a hardtail though i do miss having a 20 pound bike for moderate riding.
    If you want to drop some weight XMC 1200 wheels but they're not cheap

We've taken it to Bailey and Windrock, and even though it only has 140mm in the rear, it can handle it all due to it's geo. Hi great vid! One question on sizing: what size would you recommend for someone exactly in between sizes? I have long legs so not sure if the smaller size will work because the short seat tube. On the other hand, a very long reach on ther larger size could also be a problem.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Short seat tube is a plus no matter the size. That way you can use the longest dropper post possible. On this bike, it's best not to upsize. I'd go with the smaller size if you're exactly in between sizes. Otherwise it might be too unwieldy.

    Why do you call this an awful bike for technical climbs?

    • @dukeofmtb

      The geometry is more descent focused(long, low, & slack) and it's pretty heavy. You gotta be pretty fit to do technical climbs on a modern enduro. It's doable but it's not the best tool for the job. I feel it's best suited for blue climbs that lead to some gnarly double black descents afterward.

    FWIW Commencal confirmed VIA email that the Flip Chip from the new Meta SX will be backwards compatible with the TR. So more BB drop will be available on the TR with the chip. The currently BB drop is my only complaint with my TR build (well besides the weight). Unfortunately the Chips will not hit their web site as an a la cart part until Q3 2022! And even that is debatable but it gives me some hope for tiny upgrade and customization nexties..

      Here's an Amazon affiliate link for you: amzn.to/3lNPXhI I got the medium for my TR. I didn't need to use the plastic washers. Long bolts go through the long holes into the frame. You might need to use the original Fidlock bolts to bolt on the Fidlock mount. If the Wolftooth bolt heads are too thick, they might not allow the bottle to sit flush in the magnetic mount. Although I think the Wolftooth bolts worked fine on my bike. I used different bolts on Cory's hardtail and couldn't figure out why the bottle kept falling out at first. 😅

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here you go:
      • 10 more mm travel front and rear.
      2020 TR came with a 140mm or 150mm fork with 130mm travel in the rear.
      2021 TR is 150 or 160 front, 140 rear. Mine is the 160/140 build.
      • The 2021 TR has 64° head angle(160mm fork), a steeper seat tube, and longer reach.
      • The 2020 TR comes stock at a 66.5° HA (66 if you upfork to 150), etc.
      • Suspension kinematics have changed. Higher anti squat for better pedaling efficiency and lower leverage ratio so that heavy riders don't exceed the PSI limits of the shock. The progression curve is also less steep.
      • The 2020 Meta TR is a "heavy duty" trail bike with dated geo. A modern "light duty" trail bike like the Trek Top Fuel has more aggressive numbers than this but without all the weight. The 2021 TR is basically an enduro bike even though it's labeled as "trail." You can easily take it to the bike park without worrying about breaking anything. Although the 2020 is just as robust, steeper and chunkier trails are going to be be a bit more challenging than they need to be. I wouldn't take it to Windrock in Tennessee for example. Could it be done? Sure, but this is where the 2021 version will feel significantly better than the 2020. If you ride undulating hills all day stick with the 2020. If you do very long descents, 2021+ for the win.

      Thanks! I'm glad you feel that way. I was concerned my response was too "nerdy". 😅 The majority of the rest of our vids are more about our adventures on the trails though. I might do more review or tech vids in the future. Your comment has inspired me to try more stuff like that. Thanks for subbing too. I hope the rest of our content is engaging enough that you stick around. 😊

      @@dukeofmtb crazy how the 2021 climbs better with longer reach and more travel than the 2020.

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dempsey222 The combination of the slack HA, longer reach, and steeper seat tube, means you are sitting more forward on the bike and the front wheel doesn't tend to rise up and wander about like on shorter, steeper bikes in which you're practically seated over the rear tire. So you don't have to lean forward to put weight on the front. You can just kinda casually sit there and spin.
      A seat tube around 78° also puts you in a more comfortable pedaling position when going uphill. Less strain on the lower back and knees. On my 2017 Remedy, it felt like I had to do pullups on my handlebars while having to pedal with my legs in front of me as opposed to under me.
      In short, better weight distribution and a more comfortable body position make it easier to grind uphill with less effort and strain.
      It's only when you do more technical, trials types of things that a shorter and steeper head angled bike might have an advantage, but I'm no Danny 'Mac' anyway. 😅

    Commencal TR OR Norco Sight 🤔

    • @dukeofmtb
      @dukeofmtb  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      oooh, that's a tricky one. TR if you want a better spec for the money, stronger bike, more descent oriented(more stable downhill). Sight, if you want a more lively, poppy, bike, but with a slightly lower spec per dollar. Both are good, very similar geo and travel. TR is a little longer though.
