I love it when I'm surprised by the dissonance between the name of the fragrance and the smell, as long as it makes for a pleasant variation. Vanilla and tonka combinations are very "in" right now, and have been so for many years, but Vanille Tonka from Nicolaï Parfumeur Createur takes a courageous spin away from the norm (gourmand almondy vanilla), instead presenting us with wafts of soapy, spicy-floral freshness, with a very interesting twist: references from the world's most famous fougère, Jicky. Indeed, this cheerful aroma imbues the air with tones of dried herbs and grass, invigorating citrus and a powdery flakes of vanilla while also taking a page from the lustrous polish of the fin de siècle dandy. A very good example of breaking away from the habitual.
