    You address the real problems of shooting action in low light, and show your editing after. One of the best videos, Thanks.
    QUESTION: For your back button focus you use the AF on button and set it on the first tab which is ( metering AF start ) and put your shutter button on Metering start or do you use AE lock?

      Back button is so useful. I ran into a fellow parent who was shooting soccer this weekend and told him about it and he was like, oh that is more useful for portrait than sports. I just walked away from that guy.

    Great video with lots of good advice. I love shooting high school football and can definitely relate to your comments about needing to adjust to the worsening light as the game goes on. I use a 7D Mk2 with a 70-200 f2.8 on a monopod and have a 24-70 on my 5D Mk3 on a spider holster. I use a ballhead on my monopod to make it easier to adjust the aim of the camera as I'm following the action. Also I use kneepads since a lot of the fields around here are artificial. I try to get to the games early to get some pictures of the players warming up and to take advantage of the light. I have a good relationship with the coaches and they have no problem with my being on the field during warmup to get some shots. Also, while the light is still fairly good, I like to take shots from just outside the endzone if the team gets inside the 20. You can get some nice head-on shots of the lineman that are hard to get otherwise. Once the natural light fades the endzones are usually the most poorly lit part of the field.Below is a link to my photos of a game two weeks ago. flic.kr/s/aHskjqqcai

      hey vic. thanks for the link. those are some great shots! ive been doing lots of nightlife photography at clubs on weekends but would like to get into shooting football ect. wanna go to a local high school and get started there. i didnt realize a 70-200mm f2.8 would be this good. thought about getting a 150mm-600mm f5-6.3 but i guess i can get started with my 70-200 f2.8. i shoot with my nikon D610 at the moment but want to get myself a second body to get the wide angle shots. thanks for sharing again and good job man.

      make sure you get at least a 2.8 zoom lens or a long prime at least 2.8 , then try to keep iso to 4000 or lower for ok quality ! try to keep shutter at 1/1000 to freeze action ! and last thing is out of your control , pray for really good lights at the ball game lol

    This was dope bro. A little editing trick, suggestion, if you would have added some of the shots you took on the video as it was playing, to see how the best one, or two, came out. That would have been neat. IDK if I'm explaining myself correctly to get my point across, but either way, dope video.

    Wow , this is an old video but I'm glad I watched it and thanks so much for making it, I just shoot middle school and Cal Ripken baseball and have heard about poor light at high schools. I do have the 70-200 2.8 but mostly use an 80-400 as there is lots of light, most baseball games are daytime here in Florida where I live. Thanks,

    I take night high school football games. When the offense is near the goal line it's best to be on the end zone and not on the sideline to get that touchdown shot. I rarely take photos right on the scrimmage line. I use a Canon 5D Mk IV with the 70-200mm F/2.8

    • @Experiment6Two6
      @Experiment6Two6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the mid-‘90s, I worked for a small-town newspaper, and shot football games on Kodak Tri-X film, using a Nikon N6006 (look it up), a cheap 70-200 variable aperture zoom, and a large Sunpak flash unit (large enough that the camera mounted on the flash, instead of the other way around). I would shoot the ISO400 film as if it were 1600. It kinda sucked compared to fast lenses the guys from larger papers had, but it worked well enough - the higher ISO setting at least gave the flash a lot more reach. I shot both football and basketball that way for a couple of years, and never had a single complaint from a coach, player, or anyone else. I would typically shot the first half of one game and leave near halftime to shoot the second half of another game, as I was THE photographer and managing editor as well - like I said, a SMALL-town paper. Of course, I didn’t come close to as many keepers as Nick had in this game, but I would shoot maybe 65 shots per each game, and I knew I only really needed one to three keepers from each.

    Hi Nick, enjoyed your very informative video. One question: You are at f/2.8 with single focus point, your football guys are kind of small looking through the viewfinder, so exactly what do you put your focus point on? I have been finding it very difficult getting the focus point on their eye at 2.8 when they are moving so fast.
    Thanks

    • @NickPage
      @NickPage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah i am no where near good enough to keep it on their eye when they are running around.. I usually try to just get it somewhere on their head, but there are times when things are moving fast i am content just to have it on their numbers. I often use "zone" clusters to make it easier to hit my target

    • @awoodenspoon2422
      @awoodenspoon2422 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      that - and you shouldn't have to focus on the eye, it'll make everything else look blurry. Focusing on the helmet is better.

    Mr Page great video. I'm a novice photographer. I have started to do sports photography mainly baseball shooting high school and travel baseball teams only because i enjoy baseball a lot. I had a Nikon 3200, but I just moved up to a D90. I'm having issues shooting and freezing the shots at night time under the lights. I use a Nikon 18-300 lens. What kind of advice can you give me for shooting sports at night under lights

    • @vrphotoatlanta
      @vrphotoatlanta 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Like2Fly... try shooting a fast shutter speed and as low iso as your camera can handle at the current light. to allow for faster shutter speed. an 18-300 lens has a variable aperture if im not mistaken so the f.stop will change. im not a pro or have too much experience in sports but these are general guidelines to freeze the action. good luck

  • @angelogarciajr5356
    @angelogarciajr5356 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video Nick. I guess my comments are a little late considering you are now shooting the D5IV. I am shooting the 7DII with the 70-200 f2.8 and I struggle a lot with noise. Our poor lighting brings my ISO to 6400 and my shots are still dark and noise is an issue. I wonder if Light-room can get me by? Or maybe consider getting the 5DIII. It is a whole lot less than the 5D4, but not sure if it is my answer to quality shots? I thought upgrading to the 7D then 7DII were my answer and they were not. I might try learning to use a flash on the lower side of my mono pod if I can figure out how to do the correct settings. Now what :)

    • @NickPage
      @NickPage  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      man.. shooting highschool football is one of the most demanding situations a camera can be put through.. I am not regularly shooting at iso 10,000 and 12,500. the 5d iii starts getting pretty yucky at iso 10,000 I hated taking it above iso 8,000. it kinda depends on how serious you are about wanting to shoot more sports.. or if its just for fun.

    • @PaulOfriaTEST
      @PaulOfriaTEST 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First great video, Nick. I am about to leave my warm house to shoot a high school football game on a cold (and dark) New England field, but that's fine with me. Your vid has inspired me to push the ISO, which I tend to back off on and pay the price with pictures that I don't completely love.
      Anyway, Angelo - I was having the same issues with noise at iso 6400 on my 7D, which made me feel like a soccer mom - no offense to soccer moms, I love them lots for other reasons, but don't really want to shoot like one...So I solved the problem by taking a deep breath... then bought a used, but well cared for Canon 1D iv for $1400 last November. I was considering a new 6D (aprox $1400 at the time) for it's low light capabilities, but am so happy I went with the Big Daddy. How happy? I just bought another used one for $840.My breath is still holding since it has not yet arrived, but even if I have to put some money into it, I think I will come out ahead because this camera is that good... It takes steel cojones to buy used camera equipment, but I tend to live on the edge.
      PMO

      Paul Ofria I cannot pull the trigger on used cameras. I still haven't got a new camera yet. I should clear something up. I am getting border line OK photos for online stuff, emails, etc...but when I zoom the photo to 100% it looks pretty bad. The quality is just not good enough for what I do with them. Right now I'm worried about spending the 2600 for a new 5D3 and still not getting what I need. There is no reviews that help me because a lot of folks would think my 7D2 shoots good enough but it is not clean and sharp at zoom 100%. so now...looking at the 1DX or the 5D4. Alot of money to not know if it is the answer? thanks for your input.

      Angelo Garcia Jr I have a 7D and use my 70-200II 2.8. I set my ISO to auto, and use shutter speed of 1/1000, let it pick aperture. AI servo, and cluster focus points. Only when I'm doing football at night do I use JPEG rather than raw, just because I can get more frames per second.

    Guys, please don't just sit there an hold the button down to blast photos. Practice your decisive moment shots. If you don't know what the 'decisive moment' is, then you have a long road of learning ahead of you. Shooting on drive is lazy and what casuals/amateurs do. Know what you are shooting, predict the action and take those decisive shots.

      Your shots will be wide but you need to remember that you are shooting on a crop sensor which means your camera won't be shooting a field of view of 50 but closer to 75mm equivalent on a full frame camera so your image should appear closer. Although shooting even at 75mm equivalent is still fairly short for closeups but you should be able to get nice shots of more players at a time. Hope this helps!

Predicting the action and filling the frame are the name of the game! So it’s best when the action is running towards you which implies that you are ahead of the action hope this helps

    Hey Nick! Thanks for your great videos. I have been doing more football photography lately and running into issues of not being tack sharp with the image, lots of noise, and general newbie issues. Was wondering how much can actually be solved with post-production vs really having to nail that photo from the beginning?
    P.S. It was so great to hear that you shot over 1000 images but only had 30 or so keepers!

    • @larry41
      @larry41 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great comments Suzanne, and I am right there with you. I'm just now starting my third season (it's an 8 man league in Florida with all small schools) and I've done very little post production work since I shoot in jpg. I tried raw early in my first season so I could do some editing but that was just too much work. So now I'm trying to just get the best shots I can and go with them (not even cropping them).
      I generally shoot about 2400 of which I usually find about 25-30 that are really great and then another couple of hundred that are pretty good. I try to not post more than 200 on my photo site for the families.
      Hang in there and best of luck in your future work!

      +matt schilmoeller A grainy shot is better than a blurry shot. I prefer Aperature Priority at the widest aperature, and adjust ISO to keep the shutter as fast as possible. So keep a F/2.8 lens at 2.8 and adjust ISO to try and keep 1/500-1000
