NRM 10 Reasons I LOVE Retirement

  • There are a TON of reasons to enjoy retirement. These are just ten random thoughts I have from day to day that help me understand just how fortunate I am to have finished a life of work in time to enjoy a life of rest.
In this video I mentioned my electrolyte source I use to replenish from hard hikes and workouts. That's LMNT Drink. I cannot recommend them enough. They were kind enough to give me a referral link. If you make a FIRST purchase of any kind, I get a free box of LMNT. After that, if you re-order, I get nothing. And I'm good with that.
If you're interested in giving it a try, I suggest the sample box for a variety of flavors. My personal favorites are Citrus Salt and Mango Chili. Here is the link: elementallabs.refr.cc/timchil...
Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bio.link.
I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!

I'm 56 and in health-care. I can't stand it anymore. It is super stressful and frustrating especially when people eat themselves into weighing 400 pounds and they demand you to fix the problems THEY created. I can't wait to retire. It's going to be great.

I had retirement thrust upon me and although it took me a minute to get over that, it is the best thing that could have happened to me. As an introvert, the business world was incredibly stressful for me. The best thing about retirement for me is that I can spend all my time thinking about whatever I want to think about!! Have a lovely day, Tim!

Speaking of listening to the water, I was deaf for years until I had cochlear implant surgery. I cried the first time I heard a waterfall. I can't enough of the sound of a waterfall, a stream with rippling water, or the ocean. It is so peaceful and calming.

Am planning to retire in Summer of 2024. One of the most wonderful best-thing-about-retiring answers I heard was "the absence of those Sunday blues you get in anticipation of Monday"; I am SO looking forward to not experiencing that any longer.
Not waking to an alarm clock is a very close second.

I didn’t plan on retirement. I had both knees replaced at the same time and planned on returning to my RN hospital job. My husband had been retired for four years. I was working because I loved my job and I could work 6 - 8 days a month and get health insurance for $40/month. My knees did great but when I was released to go back to work, my husband didn’t want me to. He liked me being home and not driving 100+ miles per day so I stayed home. It took me 2 years to not want to go back to work. When I’d go to my work city, that hospital was like a magnet pulling me back. Fast forward and I can’t be happier with retirement for all the reasons you listed plus more. I’d tell people to retire as soon as you can. You never know what’s going to happen tomorrow.

I also live very nice in a small town on the Rhine near Düsseldorf. But it's not nearly as stunning as the landscape where you live. I was widowed at. 39, with four little ones left. I had to go back to Puerto Rico because I was in the accident and very seriously hurt. My parents had to care for me and the kids. We never sued the dentist who killed my son Dan husband, so the life insurance is all but gone.
I raised the four Aline and returned to work as a teacher for 15 years and retired. Obviously my retirement is not enough. I taught in PR and that retirement is substantially lower than in the main land , plus I did not work a full term.
I am retired now and just love that time is mine all mine!!!

Recently retired teacher here. I love sleeping in until 7:00 a.m. I threw out the alarm clock the day after I retired. I get to go to the bathroom whenever I want. I can eat lunch when I want. Today I went to the orchard across town to pick peaches. I didn't have to plan it. I just did it. I have been asked to return to the classroom as they have a teacher shortage here. The answer is a firm NO. My time is now MY time.

What a lovely setting and it looks like you had it all to yourself. I have found two bonuses from being retired: 1) As an introvert, I can choose to be with people or not. 2) The relaxed time frame has led me to explore new interests and creative outlets. When your nose is to the grindstone and you're trudging along in a rut, so many things get missed.

At age 69, I own my own business and absolutely love what I do. I resist leaving the office every evening. I look forward every evening to going to work the next day. I have encountered some health issues this year (not life-threatening) and people keep throwing the "R" word at me. Watching your videos has been enlightening. I am hoping that watching them will aid me in moving on from being resigned to the inevitable and perhaps cause me to look forward with happy anticipation to living the "R" word . My office lease expire Feb. 2025, and I am trying to convince myself to retire at that time. Your videos may help me prepare now and adjust at that time. What you say makes so much sense to an awful lot of people. I've worked for thirty eight years and lost my husband January 2023 after looking after him for four years, so THERES A LOT TO TO, so i haven't done a lot and find myself at 3.00pm still in my nighty. In uk at the moment its 75o indoors, to hot to do anyhing, but i will finish my de-clutter, file my paperwork away, and do some cleaning. Never thought that when i find myself on my own i would suddenly develop the " i really can't be bothered attitude " one thing though although alone, I'm not lonely and eventually i will get to your stage..

    Pajama days!
We homeschooled our kids and the first question other kids would ask them, "Do you get to do school in your pajamas?!" ( we didn't, because their focus was better dressed) I heard my daughter reply, " Oh yeah! Everyday!" I asked her why she said that, she said, "Oh mom! They get so disappointed if I tell them the truth!" 😃

I'm also a retired educator. I was built for retirement! I have so many interests and hobbies, volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and never get bored. I love that I can do what I want whenever I want for as long as want or do nothing at all. I often joke that it is startling how little I accomplish some days. Life is good! My brother (and one sister, too) is also a retired teacher and he has been out for almost 21 years and at 76, he rides his bike 12 miles a day, plays tennis and pickle ball every day, 'lives' in Key West 4 months out of the year and is the poster child for being laid back.

I’ve been easing into retirement. 😁 A couple of years ago, I took a job as head custodian of our school…just 228 steps from my front door. I took a huge pay cut from being a hotel maintenance manager, but the trade offs made it worth it! No more driving to work, dodging deer on the highway, and believe me, a school is a far nicer environment than a hotel! 😃 I’m just taking it one year at a time, but will probably retire in the next year or so. And yes, a big benefit will be going for a walk whenever we want to…that and drinking a lot of coffee! 😃 Have a great week! ☕️🇨🇦☕️

Laid off from IBM in 2012, my spouse died from cancer in 2013. I felt pretty lost. Worked 37 years in IT, much of the time on-call. Plus working with people on the other side of the world. I adjusted now and everyday is another vacation day. Don't have to put up with any dumb things at work and I don't have to drive 50-60 minutes each way to work. I used to get so tired from lack of sleep. 71 now and just do what I want.

While I am out there walking on a beautiful day, I always remind myself and appreciate the fact that I am NOT slaving away at work like I did for many years. It always puts a smile on my face to feel the liberation in my heart. Like you, I was a teacher, and you speak truth when you say that teaching is an impossibly stressful job. Your posts compare and contrast the beauty AND the difficulties of retirement. Your points about stress resonate. My watch tells me my pulse and oxygen saturations and more. 15-30 minutes revives me. My grandfather worked a b lock from the house and would go home for lunch (supper) daily. (Nooner?) One summer when I was about 10 years old I was visiting (we lived 2 miles away) and I recall him lying down for a brief rest before heading back to work and thinking to myself, "Why would grandpa WANT to take a NAP?" Now I KNOW!

I lived in Knoxville 10 years ago and remember well the traffic on and off the interstate, then I moved back to middle TN and worked downtown Nashville. I realized the Knoxville traffic wasn’t so bad 😂. I like retirement and the flexibility that comes with it. I’m happy not to fight traffic or stress over driving in inclement weather to get to work.

MAJOR TIP for you commuting people (from a former outside sales rep living in Venice Beach covering ALL of Los Angeles north to Santa Monica south to Long Beach east to Ontario):
First time you’re doing your route/commute, get out there and idle along. Note what time you’re getting home. If I didn’t leave my Ontario client by 3 pm I was in a 5 hour traffic jam. I got home at 8 pm. No accidents along the way. This WAS gonna be my “best case” scenario.
    WHAT TO DO?
Do NOT get in your car and “do” the traffic jam.
I found a great hairdresser. Fantastic MASSAGE place (if you’re an educator or in any stressful job, getting a massage once a week/twice a month or just once a month is a LIFE CHANGER), cool & hip coffee shop where I could write my notes about client visits down et al, and went to some of the BEST Asian restaurants on the planet.
I had 4 hours to kill. I was an hour away without traffic. My plan every Wednesday was to be done with my client calls by 3 but it was fine if an issue arose because I wasn’t leaving the area until 7 pm anyway.
It just changed how I dealt with it. And folks, I LOVE to drive!!! This was the 90s. Had a stick shift. Great stereo. Good tunes. I sang all the time BUT I don’t love my car ‘that’ much.
Hope you can extrapolate this TIP into all of your life. When I’m doing a road trip I account for the major city I need to travel thru and back out the time so I’m “on the other side” of that thing as I make my way towards my destination by 3 pm. If I have to get up earlier and drive with literally no traffic for hours just to “continue” to have no traffic thru the 405/10 interchange where that traffic jam is always a minimum of 3 hours, so be it.
    ;)

Only recently subscribed to your channel . Like humble voyager below! I too had my retirement thrust upon me to some extent as I was made redundant at 54 , but having worked by that time for 39 years , I thought , well why not ! I worked hard all of my life and have a nice home and ok for health wise . It was great at first , but I soon got into the Manuchia of cleaning the house over and over and not doing much else . I do have holidays and girl holidays too , but your outlook on life and your calm demeanour is having an affect on how I’m thinking moving forward . I’m from uk so things are a bit different for us here , with cultural differences too . But I’m so glad I’ve found your channel as you bring me a sense of peace . Thank you .

Sounds like you are in recovery, not retirement. I come from a family full of educators and I have heard the struggle that every dedicated educator experiences. I think every educator who has given 20+ years of their lives to this underappreciated career should be given 6 months to a year of free unlimited guidance and assistance in recovering from the stress, battle fatigue, and assault that being an educator brings. It is going to take some time for you to get to retirement; mentally, physically and emotionally. You have the time to recover, relax and enjoy the rest of your life. You might even find another vocation that fits your top ten list of reasons for loving retirement baked right into it. Could happen, with a few modifications. Say perhaps, not pajamas but maybe a style equally as comfortable. As always, enjoyed the post. Thank you for sharing your life with the rest of us. Take good care and enjoy the recovery.

I went back to my Alma Mater high school for my last 15 years and left at 66. There is goood reasoning behind stopping at 65...stamina and patience decline, as medical situations arise. I thank God every morning when I open my eyes..its a great life! Susan in Va

Oh my God, do I identify with you! I am getting ready to retire in the next year or two, and you have addressed many of the issues that I have been concerned about. I work for state government, and we have been working from home because of Covid. We are still working from home. And I love it, and I can wear PJs all day long! I’m going to go back to your other video about cleaning stuff out, which is what I need to do. My wife and I are book people, and between the two of us we could probably start a library. I’m sure we have probably 10,000:to 15,000 books between the two of us. But hey, we’ve been married 30 years when you pick up a book here you pick up another one there, they accumulate. And 95% of the books we get either at Goodwill, garage, sales, or half price bookstores. I’ve learned not to pay full price.
The big question I would have for you, did you retire with a medical plan, did you go on Medicare, or did your work have some thing? That is an issue I am dealing with. I could retire right now, as I have the points so to speak, but I would have no medical. If I wait 2 to 3 more years, I might have Medicare.
Thanks again, love your videos, just found them today. Have a great day.

Full retiree as well- US Navy 20 yrs, oil and gas industry for a couple years, then Corps of Engineers til last year. Loving it.
The lack of stress is great.. my bp is consistently about 112/65. A lot of that is diet related (carnivore). I’m able to cycle at the times I choose now.

    Enjoying your substack articles too.

Yep, good points. I quit my job and sold my house in Austin, took off in a small motorhome for a few months to figure out where to live and what to do. That was 10 years ago, full-time RVing around the western US. Now settling into a home base Oregon, but still have plans to RV travel over to the eastern US. My favorite outlook on retirement came from my father. I was still working & it was my first visit to my parents since Dad’s retirement. His first words at the breakfast table that morning were “well, they’re paying me to stay home again today.” Love that thought. I retired now myself, and I understand.

You may want to rethink freezing water in a plastic bottle. Its not recommended because it leaches carcinogens from the plastic into the water. Better to put ice cubes and water into a container with a wide mouth. New to your channel and enjoying your take on life. As a widow/ single woman trying to down size in my 70s, I can relate. I have a job that I love and takes a lot of my time. I don't have to deal with traffic, thank goodness, because I'm not in a big city, but I do drive to 4 locations for work. Traffic is not a stress or at all. I love my boss and the organization. I think, because of all this, I will continue my plan to work until I'm 70 (my Mom worked until 88!) I think the only part of my job that does make me want to leave would be frustration with coworkers. I have a good mindset about that and I will always have to be around people, so it's not like retirement solves that! I do find I run out of time to do fun things or take care of chores around the house, so retirement will be rewarding in those areas. I'm so glad you're enjoying yourself! Retirement is definitely about taking control of your time; not having other people control it. That is a clear benefit for you. Keep going on adventures and sharing them with me.

I retired when I was 66. I thought I'd work well into my 70s because I am healthy and in great shape, and I really liked working. But in 2020 when covid hit, and masks hit, and all the minutia with it, and on top of that the corporation I was working for had drasticallly changed over the 13 years I was there - it had become a micromanaged institution that made me crazy, well that all about did it for me. Less and less freedom in my life made it an easy peasy choice for me, and when I retired I was a very happy camper. Its been a little less than 3 years, and it's been the very best time for me in my entire life. I am so grateful to all the circumstances that propelled me to walk away, for its been a godsend. ❤❤❤
