dancer main here. people call it RNG-based but my overall damage has never really wavered. there aren’t too many buttons to hit but the random light-ups keep my brain awake. i love it
I also main DNC, and it's always an engaging game of Whack-a-mole :)
Yeah, I'll take the multiple 50/50s any day over BRD's 20%, once-in-a-blue-moon, sacrifice-your-firstborn-to-get-a-proc arrow. Specially in lower level content, it feels teeeeerrible.
You don't even need to stand still to cast your abilities, it's pretty chill. At least until you get assigned to interact with boss mechanics because you have the most free time.

When you get around to trying Dancer, I implore you to not think of it as a bunch of RNG- Instead, Try to think of it as an interpretive dance, ever changing and flowing to and fro as the whims hit. It makes a big difference in the mentality of how you play it and how you perceive the many procs.

@@JustRuss - Also it feels awesome when you get the rhythm your Dance Partner is on and you can pop you big buffs right before they enter their two-minute window. Seeing a SAM pop off and visibly impact a boss healthbar and knowing you helped make that Midare a turbo-crit feels great.
As a machinist main, you're the one most likely to give the melee dps a run for their money when it comes to staying on top of the enmity list

@@iaxacs3801to be fair that fight is ass as a melee. Trying to hit positionals is basically hopeless for how often the boss turns, moves, or throws you around.
There was one point in an Endwalker dungeon where the DPS on my machinist caused me to literally rip the aggro from the mobs I attacked even though the tank had their stance on. I'll never forget how good that felt lol
My moment of pride on MCH was tanking the 2nd boss in Puppets Bunker until the 2nd tank buster before I died.

@@hmr0470 pretty much I was in panic mode for like 3 minutes straight Lolol! Used every mitigation I could while the tank was fixing whatever went wrong on their end. In the end though, we didn’t wipe so it worked out but damn was it intense.
that tank was literally using only single target attacks...

If you do end up liking Reaper, I would definitely consider giving machinist a shot. Barring the possibility for big reworks in dawntrail, machinist really does play a lot of a ranged reaper. They both have rotations about building up resources and spending them to enter speedy phases where you attack fast and weave abilities between them on top of it.

The one thing I absolutely love about range is that each one is vastly different from each other in theme, story and style; be it appearance, play and utility. More so when ya Duty Finder and if ya happen to be MCH and DNC pops in for the other DPS... *cough* Yeah... Queen is a sexy beast. Pair up with a DNC for Partner to turn your Queen in to a literal Sexy Thicc Terminator with Robocop devastation each CD cycle.
There's something about playing dancer that just feels really good. Got a good vibe to it.

So fun fact, MCH is basically the phys ranged version of MNK/SMN where square has kept rebuilding them. I started back in stormblood and comparing that MCH to Shadowbringers/Endwalker MCH is like night and day (not to mention what ive heard about Heavensward MCH).
First off, back then if you had bad ping....don't bother, the class was basically unplayable. There used to be so much you had to manage. Nowadays, your heated mode is triggered by the hypercharge skill....however back in the day, it just happened whether you wanted it or not. So if you accidentally screwed up your rotation, or even if you lagged a bit, you could end up in your burst window....with no burst. Next, instead of the battery meter for queen, we had bullets. You could only hold 3 and they were pivotal to do like...anything. increased your potency, higher proc chances, and heat management. However the only way to reload was through either "quick reload" that would give you 1 bullet every 15s...or "reload" that filled 3 every 30s....god I despised this system. Lastly there was Gauss Barrel, it was a weird floaty thing that went on the tip of your gun. Messed with glam, basically required to put on at the start of anything and you never turn it off, also I swear it had a hidden internal timer as I swear it would just turn itself off randomly.
I can't speak on HW MCH as I wasn't playing back then, however I heard it had cast times like a mage. Overall, god I'm glad they changed MCH in SHB because so many people (myself included) did not like MCH, and it was one of the more unpopular classes.
Not gonna lie I actually miss Reload and Quick Load because it felt so slick loading up the chamber to use them, but the mechanics surrounding them was a bit of a hassle. I'd honestly be fine with it if we kept the current heat system and never ever made anyone ever have to look at the atrocity that was Gauss Barrel ever again, but I do miss the reload system a bit. Also, Gauss Barrel didn't turn itself off randomly, it blows off the end of your gun and goes on cooldown when you entered overheat, which was a massive pain.
Just take the stormblood mch and add cast times and there you go that was heavensward mch for the most part
Brd= Healer's Assistant, DNC=I suck at DPS but here SAM I can make you even better (I kid I've seen some insane DPS from good DNCs), MCH= Dopamine addict living for their next hit in 20 sec from Drill (Also added TF2 crit sound mods so Reassemble + Chainsaw becomes an even higher dopamine shot from all the crit sounds in a mob pull) and secretly more depressed then the Dark Knight.

DNC is fun despite the RNG~
Also regarding healing: SGE can be kinda rough to learn since it slaps you with a bunch of skills already at level 70, so I suggest trying other healer job if ever. But once you get the hang of SGE it becomes one of the easiest to use healer roles imo
Machinist is the most brain dead of the three and I love it, brain dead easy and does the most dps of the three

Is it easier than dancer? How does it compare to it? I favour jobs which are simple with straightforward rotation that stay easy even at higher levels like 80 or 90.

Bard is really fast paced in its opener. I call it the ranged dragoon because of how many ogcds it has
Ya, we have it easy. Some days, I just feel like playing on girlfriend mode, and playing dancer. Where the 2 hardest mechanics are deciding who's going to actually dps well, and mid battle partner swap should your dance partner start making out with the floor.
Otherwise, it's just press the shiny button that lights up, and give zero fucks about mobility or range limit restrictions.
Bard bows are some of the biggest and best looking weapons in the game alongside Dark Knight 2-handers. You can really tell which jobs are favoured by the design team for glam. Nothing sadder than being a Summoner/Scholar and having a book that's too small for anyone to notice.
DNC is on main character, alt character is Reaper. Both fun.
basically aside from Machinist, bard and dancer focus more on support.
I have a history of off tanking with my bard 😂

DNC main here, honestly this job really feels perfect for people with short attention span who love to click shiny glowing buttons and shiny glowing buttons only (me) and STILL do reletively good deeps.

As a long time (since BC to current) prot off season fury warrior i LOVE my bard. There is just somthing that gives me joy about that mitigation and healing buff and esuna and all while dpsing and playing songs.
When I break from healer to do deeps, I go MCH…
Yea. It’s fun outdamaging the melees with a well reserved explosive.
Burning all your heat and battery in one go while squeezing in two overdrives just feels so damn good.
When Heavensward first came out, they made Bard and the then new Machinist job both have a dmg buff stance that added cast bar for their weaponskills. I hated it soooo much, was BRD main from ARR and I quit it entirely lol.
Now a days I main Machinist ironically.
At the risk of just whining, I'll put my opinion out there that the ranged tax as currently designed is a tad too strong for the logical reason it exists. In high end content where this balance is intended to actually matter, melee and casters can often mostly mitigate downtime to be nonexistent or to have minimal impact. Losing 1-2 GCDs in melee over a fight is probably not anywhere near as bad as just being 10-15% less effective overall. But that said, JoCat isn't wrong that the penalty isn't so bad as to justify not playing them entirely. You just probably won't be stacking multiple phys ranged in one 8 man static.
Gotta give the other DPS a chance 🤭 it is funny to me, though, whenever I see someone bring up the fact that they only play melee DPS because "max deeps", only to see them out performed by any ranged dps.
@@pierreguay3576 There are few times I will feel more spiteful than outperforming the person with Dance Partner on, toward both the dancer and the undeserving soul who received their partnership.

There have been times where i've played DNC and wasn't shy about switching Dance Partner from a melee dps (expecting they'll perform the best) to a ranged or magic dps that was clearly doing a way better job. Feels bad, but, sometimes, i just wanna get my raid roulette over with xD

Dancer and Bard have always been my forte. I may not be the top of the dps list but it’s because I’m putting someone else there with my supporting
for Dancer besides the usual attack coin flips later on you also begging your party to flips a coin for you as well.. you could have one Saber dance (big damage skill) or up to five in the roll depends on your resources proc by your party (8 person party). prey the rng god.
Ngl, I love my fairy themed bard. I get to look shiny, play music and buff my team. Ma, I'm useful! :'D
FWIW, they've _largely_ gotten rid of the ranged tax, at least officially, as of a patch or two ago. Machinists are now basically equal with Summoners, which while at the bottom of the pile when played at a high level of skill, also have a rather higher skill _floor_. As an example, if you look at a bit easier content (so _average_ skill level is lower, since barrier to entry/success is lower) like the latest two extreme trials, the 50th percentile for Machinist is actually higher than it is for _Black Mage_ (meanwhile, the top end Black Mage parses are the highest in the game, of any job).
So ya, ranged tax isn't really a thing anymore. They _do_ still penalize jobs with a "utility tax" (poor Red Mages), though that really only helps Machinist, since Dancer and Bard both have a lot of support abilities. And there's definitely a bit of an "ease of use" tax (hence why Summoners are also tuned rather low, and why even relatively easy melee, like Reaper, are higher, because positionals and forced disconnects.). Dancers and Bards also derive a _lot_ of their DPS from their strong party buffs, so their _personal_ DPS is quite a bit behind other jobs, but their overall contribution is roughly on level with the other "easy utility" jobs. As an example, the 75th percentile personal DPS for Bard is ~18% lower than Machinist, but only ~3.5% lower for total party DPS contribution due to their buffs.
I don't play ranged DPS, but when I do it has to be machinist. I can't do RNG rotations at all, and it honestly feels like any of the melee dps rotations (excluding monk maybe) are way easier.
Wild to think that MCH was the old DNC of RNG, where you had an RNG to proc the 2 and 3 of your 1 2 3 combo, but if you had ammo loaded into your gun it was guaranteed, so you had some wild 123 123 combo that was like... Reload, 1, 2, 1, 3, Quick Load, 2, 3 to get two full 123 combos off. Reload gave you 3 shots so you could proc 2, then guaranteed proc 3, then do 1 again to proc another 2. Spend 3, quick load 1 shot, use your 2 to guarantee 3 again, then use 3 lol.

edit: and didn't know much about non NIN rotations until EW
@xkmto oh man, you missed out on the NIN finger breaking chaos then. Until early ShB, where it was changed in 5.1 I think, NIN's Mudra were ogcd. Meaning you had to weave the whole 3 mudra string and release between your gcd. In 5.1 they changed it so mudra require your gcd to use. It was wild.
A good BRD can really make a run smooth and fun for everyone, faster run speed between packs/walls, almost perfect uptime for extra buffs, a removal of a snare/slow/dot even when not your full toolkit is there it can make lvling dungeons or older content go so much faster

Some people call DNC "brain dead", but there are ways to play it poorly. You can be really valuable if you make sure to lean hard into supporting your party. Don't overwrite your fellow ranged's buffs and get! those! Improvs! Bless your healers with a bit less mana usage.
i managed to save our party using Shield Samba and Curing Waltz as DNC when our healer died in time to defeat the boss. if i had time to use Improvisation that could have helped too. If you get timing right and know your skills you can make a big difference
There's actually a way to set BRDs abilities into macros so you don't have to worry about procs and you can spam the same button and play candy crush with your other hand.

First, turn off error messages in your settings, as till we a lot of them when you are synced down.
SINGLE TARGET:
Ac/ "Straight Shot"
Ac/ "Heavy Shot"
Ac/ "Bloodletter"
MULTI-TARGET:
Ac/ "Shadowbite"
Ac/ "Quick Nock"
Ac/ "Rain of Death"
👆🏽These are set so pressing the button will make you use the most powerful attack available at the moment. You just need to spam the button.
Songs:
Micon / (song name)
Ac: {song name}
Wait 1
Ac "iron Jaws"
👆🏽Do this for all three songs and remeber to cast the next song BEFORE the timer is up and you'll automatically refresh your DOTs before they expire. This only works if you use your DOTs AFTER you casted your first song.
(You can cancel macros by hitting another command in case you were worried about using iron Jaws repeatedly when hitting pitch perfect.})
From here it's just managing your personal buffs, non-song party buffs and special arrows like emoryal, sidewinder and apex/blast, which are best set a La carte as they require specific timing or situations.
The faceroll the piano part of Bard… yeah seriously. By that point all your major CDs are back, you have everything ready to unleash proc-nado and as many party/raid buff as you can fit into one class active… y’all better be dealing more damage 😂

I'm here to bash on BRD, because I went ARC to begin, because bows are cool. Bard is not.
The DoT management isn't very difficult, and gets easier at higher level. The main "rotation" is "mash this button until you get another button or an OGCD". The songs are "press once every thirty seconds and continue doing what you were already doing".
I tried to stick with it, but I knew it was time to quit when I legitimately fell asleep during a dungeon and my party did not notice. I have no memories between, like, second pod and final boss.
MCH is now my ranged of choice. It keeps me awake because I feel like I'm playing an actual DPS, like, with a rotation and everything.
Im a mech, and i do more damage than most melees

Dancer is technically RNG, but you don’t use your feathers outside of 2 min CDs unless you’re about to cap, so dancer is pretty consistent.
At least range attacks on melee classes don't break combos like they used to

@@JustRuss yeaaah. If I remember right, that is why in jocats melee dps video. It brought up the doing ranged for just some damage instead of waiting for the combo. Could be wrong that it was pre-change
I see your chat keeps saying that Sage isn't new player friendly, and that's really not true. If you can play a DPS class, you can play a sage.
Ranged is only ranged on single targets. All of the AOEs you have are based around you, so you have to move in. not as close as melee, but still...
I only have my bard at lv 50 so far, so maybe this changes in future expansions. But so far I have a massive love-hate relationship with the class. Mainly because when it comes to RNG I swear that a hag must have cursed me as a baby because I have the worst luck lol. Because I'll frequently go whole dungeons without my RNG super arrow proccing EVEN ONCE, so I only get to use it when the ability that forces it to proc comes off cooldown. But when the RNG gods do decide to bless you and you're just firing off big arrows left and right, oooh that feels amaaaaazing.
Needless to say, since dancer is in Shadowbringers I can't use it, but with my RNG anti-luck the class scares the hell out of me and I'm not sure if I would play it even if I was allowed to play it lol.
Machinist is probably my favorite of the ranged, just because of how consistent it is. No RNG to worry about, and your meters fill at a steady rate too. It sort of reminds me of warrior actually, where you build up your meter that once full lets you cash it in by just spamming the hell out of a high damage move. So if you like warrior's playstyle then I'd recommend trying machinist as your ranged class.
Bard is rather bad till like 76

Russ, believe me when. I tell you, no self respecting DPS player plays Dancer for anything other than ERP
