  • I went in to the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience with very little knowledge of the tour and facilities there. Everything in this video is my honest take, but I will reiterate - I love Heaven Hill and heartily recommend their products. That said, I'd definitely watch this video before booking a tour at this Whiskey Row staple.

Throughout this video I was picturing you audibly sighing around every corner of the tour 😆

Hopefully it's clear I wouldn't do that. That said, giving an honest perspective and still being "nice" is tough.

I have fond memories of that Old Milwaukee exhibit at the museum.

We recently did the bourbon trail as well. When planning our stops, I trusted my instincts and skipped booking anything at the EWBE. On July 17 we toured Old Forester and decided to take the short walk over just to check it out. They had some cool bottles in the gift shop but that was it. It was a lot like a building built around a gift shop. Glad we didn't take the tour. Your description reminds me of the "It's a Small World" ride at Disney. Your Milwaukee Museum reference was spot on!

I had a really good time on the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience. I liked the fountain in the entryway and found it to be a show stopper. I went in May of 2022 and it was nothing like what you're describing. I did not see the video you described, which sounds awful. I had the tasting and experience in a different room, a private bar in the basement that was the original speakeasy after doing the regular walk of the distillery. An actor played the part of Tom Bullock and in character did a tasting with us, and gave historical information of the current and discontinued bourbons EW has put out. They discuss the real history behind the label including conflict with other distillers and they tied in all the other brands under the label. It might be possible you took the standard tour available to the public and not the "Evan Williams Experience" which was 1.5-2 hours?

I live in Virginia and I’ve been there twice. It’s a great tour! Only distillery I’ve been to and I enjoy it thoroughly

Should’ve done the speakeasy tour, I loved it. You get to try hard-to-find whiskey and you get special access to stuff they have behind the counter reserved for speakeasy tourists only(that day it was EC TB), and all the history you’re looking for.

I agree with you. I did the bourbon trail last October and Evan Williams was probably my least favorite tour as well. The gift shop and the presentation was not great. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it could've been better.

I love the honest reviews! You are balanced in the critique. I can tell you are a good dad. I'm looking forward to the Texas whiskey episode. I hope you get a lot of samples! There are some great ones out there. Lots of craft distilleries so the bottles are pricey.

The "tour" is what it is.... a fun experience that families may enjoy, "Disney-esque"...Not a nuts and bolts "hard hat" distillery tour, but not meant to be. I would not call it the "worst"... but I would call it "different" and "unique"

You're very kind, Gary. At the same time, I don't know many folks taking their families on a bourbon tour unless the kids are of age.

I went on it a couple weeks ago. I walked out after the tasting and didn’t wait around. I was just generally bored. Evan Williams was a pretty cool dude though.

Two years ago, The EWBE was the first stop of our trip to Louisville and it was massively mediocre. The fountain is cool for selfies and I have one of me standing there with a bottle of Evan Williams and a smile and looking like a total TOURIST/GOOBER. That video presentation has all the acting chops of a high school production and it's boring to boot. Until you get to the sample pours and the small, but interesting gift shop, I can't say the EWBE made much of an impression on me.
I was still pretty much a newbie on this bourbon journey, so this had to be pretty stock for a veteran like you.

Jon, Nevel Meade was fantastic as was Heritage Hill. Both beautiful, forgiving tracks and at the same time, they'll spank you if you get too far afield.

Drew P, my worst tour was Heaven Hill "You do bourbon" Basically $40 a person to bottle your own. All tastings were BP, and overpriced. "guide" was too touristy "shcticky". For Texas bourbon, Garrison Brothers best by far, prove me wrong. :)

Love bourbon...and like most of your content. But you really gotta tone down the hipster vocabulary.
I mean, "janky"??? Over and over? And uncle with "dank" already...and "rad" too.
You'll pick up a lot more subs speaking like an adult. Carry on...

I’m really confused - the experience never claimed to be any more than what it is. It’s a themed education experience with a micro distillery and a tasting, like, that’s it. It was the first in Louisville of its kind and the competition was able to build upon it creating different experiences for tourists. I’m sorry you failed to do any research and were disappointed with the museum aspect, but yea, it’s always been compared to being Disney-fied. If you want a factory, go to a factory. This is like complaining that Wrigley Field isn’t as glossy as Yankee Stadium. Both serve a purpose for fans, same for all the diverse bourbon tours. The level of hostility you show is a little weird as if the tour assaulted you personally, it’s just bourbon man.

I find tours boring for the most part anyway. Hearing people tell me things I could just as easily read puts me to sleep. As such, booked the Ideal Bartender Experience in the speakeasy at EW.
