- Mason Ho has been in and out of the water recently due to an injury. After a few weeks of healing we hit up one of our favorite surfer/humans Noa Dean to go surf with us.
This first session was a beautiful day before the swell hit. Mason got lucky because it was a mellow and fun way to start surfing again. The boys checked it not expecting much and seen a wave to ride so they wasted no time.

I've surfed all over Oahu and anytime the Ho crew showed up I was Stoked, not bummed, because I could just sit there on my board with my jaw dropping at perfect position and timing. Mason, please give Michael my greatest affection and respect, I'm about his age and still jamming too. What an inspiration

I have one for ya, back in 07 when I was living in Jax Beach, I took a G5 fin made a mold of it, and then took carbon fiber and laid it up inside the mold with a balloon inflated it to make a hollow carbon fiber G5 glass on fin. Later on, I made it in two pieces so I could run unidirectional strand up the front and back edge of the fin. This was strong enough to run over a 2x6 floating in the water, used3 layers of 5.6oz twill on the foil side2on the flat side with the rope up the edges. If you use glassons on your boards, most don’t. Maybe like a sacrificial, blow mold, construction to make it in one piece.
When your signature fins are finished, if they don't have bright colours in some form of the design, then they won't truly represent Mason Ho! ❤
I like that 5'6 ...lost mini driverat rocky point that you use on my favorite short surf vid "Northern Tip", the music fits so perfect too! Thank you for all the great videos over the years.

PS: glad you feeling better Mase. I wish I was a more knowledgeable hydrodynamicist. I'm a big fan of my trailing fin or fins to be a Lil smaller with more flex and pop out of my turns. I mostly ride quads but I've noticed that I get more release from turns if I downsize my trailers. It's odd but I get some cheapies that work well. But all of this is coming from a solid intermediate intermediate. Stay healthy and strong Mason. You are one of the few who's really consistently bringing the Aloha and soul. Remain true bruddah. I have missed seeing you surf and search. Thank you for letting us be with you again. I don’t know anything about finology but I learned recently that there was an explosion in surfboard design during the 60s due to LSD, so extrapolating that out to this decade perhaps some shrooms and a 3-D printer? Or maybe ask AI?

There are a a lot of tri fins that have a smaller middle fin and a lot of twin + trailers out there but there are not many shortboard tri fins set ups that have a larger middle fin and two smaller side fins. I have owned fun longboards and guns with a larger middle fin and two smaller side fins so I don't see why it wouldn't work great for shortboards. It would be an interesting project with a cool outcome. If the fins were successful I bet a lot of people would be interested to buy them.
I've surfed a lot with the Kelly back fin and it works great, same with the am2 fins, they have a smaller centre.
I've tried smaller side fins in Bali when I knocked out my fins on the reef for 2 days on a nice point break and used side bite fins, because that's all I had, with a normal centre and it was absolute dog shit. Paddled great but had no drive when doing turns. It took a thrusters greatest attribute away. Do not recommend. Got a new set two days later and never wanted to experiment that way again.
Ranked fin with smaller centre template. Not disimilar to the AM template, but stiffer and maybe slighlt more upright

No solid ideas on fins but I think it depends on the individual surfer…better than the less leeway needed. Great approach vis Open-Source to start 😊
Dudee for fin design you have to do something like all white fin + two stripes on each fin in the rainbow color (similar to the julian fin but only 2 stripes, bigger and vert). The rainbow is your trademark now. Then your sig through one of the lines!

Location: The Search... Not even like a Hemisphere or a Continent😂... But then Mason let it slip that this might've been Australia...so we've got that going for us.
Being a Bigger guy, I've always liked bigger fins. And I find that the foil really helps to generate speed, at least on Trifin set-ups. I've had the foiled, larger fins turn a board that was slow and virtually unrideable for me, into a fun board. So I doubt that helps, but thought I should let that be known.
Good luck on the recovery program. I look forward to seeing more great things, coming soon. Will there be a return to the Wedge and Cylinders, in your near future?

I think these would look awesome with the aluminized carbon fiber fabric and the 2 vertical black carbon strips. I would be curious to see if the fins would feel too stiff with the addition of the aluminum. Mason let me know if they ever make a set like this lol
A fin designed to get a little scratched up on the rocks but not completely lose its functionality would be rad. Kind of like a snatched up skate deck.. maybe there's a colour reveal underneath the top layer.

You Rock Mason!! I have different fin models, and I think the fin design have a lot to do with the surfer approach to the waves, type of waves and type of surfboard. Since you are a well rounded surfer, the mix of sucessfull fins like Mick Fanning´s(speed), Al Merrick ( looseness) and Julian´s fins, will work well. The magic formula is still yet to be found!! You are my 1st choise for surfer skills and new approach to surfing. Magic Masse the NEW FCS FIN 🙃

But heres an idea
Make that back trailer fin really flat
Like pull out the foil a ton
And to compensate for that flatness pull in the outline even more so its like a knifey little nubbin
Itll feel really good and accurate on clean days and sticky on bumpy ones id guess
But you never know till you try
And maybe slide the trailer up a bit too
To compensate for the stickiness of a flat foil by closing the distance between front and trailer loosening it up

Different rake for center fin
Different flex for center fin or side fins
Crazy looking big knifey center fin, smaller side fins
Asymmetric fins, designed for going primarily 1 direction for particular slabs/reef breaks
fin that has some snowboard edge technology in it like the wavy snowboard edge that cuts into the icey snow better
leading edge more like a serrated knife instead of like a smooth blade, tips of serrated points could be wider points as well that give a wave pattern to the entire side of the fin
fish scale texture on side of fins
different fin materials - maybe metals??? like copper alloy or something wild
super long incredibly thin fins, like a sail fish dorsal fin
cool psychedelic colors, maybe some android jones type dmt inspired artwork. maybe each fin is a different piece of art and theres like 20 pieces of art and each set gets a random 3 pieces.
What about the"MF"model? you know, the Mason Fanning fin?👍🙌

Mr 2 plus 1 is the best fin set up build of that maybe bigger center and not as big side fins. Make it more all around for faster waves
I really like the 80/20 foils. The Fanning twin plus fin is my favorite. I’d love to see more foiled fins. Are the Mick thruster fins foiled? I think they are…but FCS calls it something else in their specs. I’m a fan of the H4s too. Tom Curren used to ride a template sorta like that (I think it had a lot less base though). I think he was riding a hatchet tip sorta fin on that black beauty he rode in the Heritage Heat at Bells.
