Hey, thanks for the question, basically what i did was turn the PS3 vertical because when it's turned vertical the grinding noise goes away then what i do every month is open it up, clean it inside by dabbing alcohol on the laser & spinning motor where the disc is placed, that way it won't make the disc dirty or have playback effects, & don't worry about yours, you will be able to play GTA 5 with no worries but if you know how to disassemble a ps3 then do what i did, it will make the noise stop.

hatsoffsam24 my experiences with it was terrible.disk drive was loud because of a thin piece of plastic covering it,fan would go crazy after playing a graphically intense game.menu would lag (I think that's normal on ps3).I didn't have good experiences with it though.but for me,I've had no problems with the slim models across xbox and ps.they always seem more well built than base and newer models.That's just my experiences.
I wouldn't worry dude, it can't get worse than this, i did fix the problem by cleaning it and flipping it vertical, the only thing it does now is go really loud when starting up & loading into the game, but after 15 min in the game it shuts up.

It sounds silly but it legitimately works. I spent hours to find a solution, all of which didn't work, and then, with anger it hit it on the top (quite firmly) and fixed it
In your case buddy, you need to open up your ps3, clean the laser with alcohol, let it settle before closing it up. then with a cloth, dab some alcohol on that and very carefully wipe the game disc slowly. (RISKY) should fix it!

Mine repeatedly makes 6 perfectly timed ("dvvvvv") followed by two lower ones that are a little lower. It does it whenever I play gta V and it worries me. I play it and all I dear is " dvvvv dvvv dvvv dvvv dvvv dvvv dvvvvvvvvv dvvvvvvvvvv" over and over again. Should I put the ps3 sideways?(Simmilar model to yours)

man my old ps3 was stuck on a update loop,i tried everything,took it apart like 9 times ,cleaned it removed hdd reformatted it,disconnected ribbons , and it always went back to that update loop,always showing a error message.sony services said send it in but warranty was up and i opened it.looked online ,no one had a fix for it ,heaps of peeps had this problem after updating to 4.11 ,my advice .. get a new one ...

that happened to me i opened it to try and fix it and the magnetic circle thing that pushes the disc down slipped off and fell onto the big fan or whatever it is and now it won't turn on lol
Yeah mine just started doing that...I just turned it on and went to Netflix now it's making this weird spinning and grinding sound but it stops as soon as I open the tray.

Take the disc out of the ps3 hold down power button until it cuts off unplug power cord plug it back in hold down power and eject a the same time until ur ps3 makes a shhhhhhhhhhhh sound for like 30 second then power button will blink red un plug power cord plug back in a it is fixed. On the tv at the side there 3 small plugs 1 is white 1 is yellow 1 is red they will probably be in the wrong way so just switch them around to this order yellow at the top the white then red
Do not bother trying fixing this issue. Wasted time. Use the short side instead and let the cdrom be vertical instead of horizontal. Only good the dissasembly did me was losing Void and getting to remove dust.

The "eye" that reads the disk has lifted up, and it is touching the bottom of the disc. You have to take the ps3 apart and push the "eye" back in...

I have and it kinda worked for a few mins but i think the main problem is the drive itself meaning id need a new one.
Take blue ray drive apart add greases to the worm gear for the eye make sure it slides. So lube it or call Sony your PlayStation look newer then mine.
something is on the thing that reads the disc like hair or something so make sure ur discs arent scratched

Hmm that's unusual, usually its's when the disc is running, try cleaning it, and check the disc to see how dirty it is.

try taking it apart and then turn it on and stuff and look closely to see what is scraping against or something. SOUNDS LIKE A DAMN CHAINSAW!!!

Mines do that to. The only difference is mines puts a deep ring in the center of my disk

I managed to fix the noise problem (NOT DIRTY DISCS) jUST TURN THE ps3 "VERTICALLY" and it should stop the sound.
LOL ive gotten use to the sound now and it's not doing any damage so im going to wait a while till i get it fixed.
I am currently having the same problem with my system after a night long play session.
I really hope not but if thats the case ill let a professional open it up because ill just do more damage.
No, you shouldn't worry, but if you want to make sure just clean it with ALCOHOL

Yeah ive had it for like 6 months now and you get used to it.
mines makes a similar sound when i put the game in and during games it stops like its loading or something and then when i quit it just freezes

I fixed mine by covering the laser and motor with alcohol, try it. it may still leave disc marks but stops the noise!

I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM I WHEN I PLAY PS3 MW 3 ONLINE FOR 2 HOUURS THEN I EJECTED TH DISC AND THE DISC IS DIRTY BUT I DONT HAVE THE SOUND
