One of the things i have found out is that most bird people are very open and helpful when it comes to needing advice on birds. I have met some great people that have taken the time to teach me the correct way. I have learned so much from watching you guys and I even went back to the blog and watched the entire thing from start to finish. Looking forward to meeting you in December at the classes and hoping I won’t be one of the untrainable’s. LOL

At 18:30 when you talk about people yelling at you instead of helping to solve the problem, that’s all too relatable. Lately I’ve been watching some Teal Swan videos and her video about the Victim, Villain and hero dynamic really relates. How its best to focus on solutions, not labeling everyone to fall into one of those roles.

You're so right about "training people" as well as the bird/animal. I realized this fact as we were working with our two Dobies. We had to change our way of thinking and bad habits which took some time (and training), but ultimately we all (two dogs, two humans) were rewarded with fantastic relationships. Thank you both; you're awesome trainers of birds and humans. =O )

Ive always said that our birds teach us how to treat them, distract them, reward them, etc. When people are not open to learning, that’s a problem. I’ve had my cockatoos ( U2 and M2 ) since 2001 and I thank God for every day that I spend with them. Thanks for the honesty. ❤️🕊

I think people also forget they are our also one of our descendants of flying dinosaurs there is a lot of evolutionary intelligence and complex behaviours in birds, and this is why I believe they still have a tendency to aggression. That said birds when they are lovable they truly are wonderful.

  • @animallover5626

When you say having the connection with the animal is your favorite part. YES! I’ve always loved working with animals, much more than dealing with people. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I said “a dog trainer!” at 6 years old. I remember my parents telling me that wasn’t a good job, and for the rest of my life when asked what I want to do with my life I’ve said I don’t know but I know the truth is I’ve always wanted to work with animals, but I’m not sure how to do it without dealing with a lot of people. People make me anxious which is not ideal when working with animals. I have cats&dogs and growing up I also had goats, a bearded dragon, fish and a hermit crab. I’m not a people-person either, but my boyfriend of 5 years is great with people, like Dave is. I’ve been wanting a bird for about a year now, everyday I watch all sorts of bird videos. Nothing makes me laugh like a silly bird. The high pitched voices of IRNs and Alexandrine parrots are my absolute FAVORITE! Lately I’ve been watching your videos with Rasta, I found them searching for Alexandrine videos. lol

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I tend to come off very harsh to people because my brain works very bluntly and so that's what comes out of my mouth - also I can't hide how I am feeling so my face just says EVERYTHING because I've had a chance to! I've found that having other people kinda be the "forefront" of me helps me a lot... almost like a barrier. For example, when we do in home consults I let Dave take the lead and then I chime in and by the end I start coaching or I start whenever Dave is like "have at it" - he kind of lets me know when they're ready for me, haha! It's also the same for customer service, when we get an email directed towards me I will write a response and I'm SURE Wendy "fixes" it while still getting my points across hehe. So it's nice having people as part of your team that can kind of help bet the people persons before the people get to you!

I just brought a baby Hahn’s Macaw home a couple of weeks ago. She came to me from the breeder with her first two wing feathers clipped and they recommended I continue with that practice . But after listening to what you had to say about clipped vs fullly flighted birds I will never clip her wings again. We live next to a forest preserve and constantly have hawks in our trees and we often see evidence that they’ve been successful in their hunts. I’m so concerned my girl will slip out the door, but I now realize having her clipped will not prevent that from happening but having her fully flighted will give her every opportunity to protect herself. Thank you for that, and I can’t wait to learn so much more from you both!

Glad I found you guys. Not because I have or train birds, but because I'm a wildlife photographer , photography teacher and tour guide here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I first wanted to say your videos are well shot, edited and voiced. Because you have no formal training, hats off to you. I think each of you, in different ways, are excellent teachers.
I am not in show business, but have met many and befriended some celebrities because of where I live, but also because of what I do and teach with photography and wildlife conservation. I'm also a formally trained and experienced journalist, so I enjoy meeting new and interesting folks like you, even through video. Great to see two "kids" make it the way you have. Stay strong and thanks for the videos.

Y'all are so spot on with owners and learning. I worked for a cutting horse trainer for year's. I watched and learned but when working a horse there are so many scenarios of what to do at the right time. It takes a lot to get the timing down and as y'all have shown on the vlogs timing is crucial!!! I love watching y'all so much, and live the honesty of the time. I had a quaker i hand raised, worked with her for a long time. Changed jobs started working nights....... became so hard to spend time with her. She became almost impossible to handle, i had to give ger to my brother and then my mom. I still feel guilty over that. She wld whistle a certain whistle i did, fly into her home on command, say her name (with an extra lol instead of Clue was ClueClue), plus so many other things. Now I know the time required and know I can't provide that so I enjoy watching y'all. Thank you for making their lives so wonderful.

Oh Jamie, I’m so sorry to hear about Blueberry honey. I understand the comfort you get from your feathered creatures. When my husband died last year it was my IRN Lynnie that kept me from the depths of despair. I had to get up to feed her or i wouldn’t have bothered. It was like she knew, she was either on my shoulder or diving down the front of my bodice for the next several months. When you bond, there’s nothing stronger.
    Big hugs Jamie! 🤗

Wow, you guys have such an amazing story! If I wasn't still living with Post Concussive Syndrome, I would totally want some help/ a consult so I can train Cheeky better (my Goffin). It really is true that politely asking people in life for advice or help does work. For years I assumed I couldn't volunteer at an animal center because of my health issues, but after emailing the founder they made a position for me to shadow them with less hours expected due to my health. I was amazed, and so grateful. I will definitely take the risk of asking in life while pursuing my career as a vet or vet tech pr animal trainer (still haven't decided yet lol). Thanks for sharing you two! :)))

You are awesome. I was just looking for a bird, and I came across this and was watching your videos for 2 hours. I had a bird growing up I named him Bird. When I got him he was a baby, so he was very shy. And I was 7 so I spent a lot of time every day until I could hand feed him. I just did what seemed natural. But after a year he became very amazing and by the time I had him 2 years he could speak about 100 words, and he rode everywhere on my shoulder. He was very smart. He was just a little parakeet, but he was amazing.

It must be so hard to put yourself out there, then bracing yourself for ridicule when you’re just sharing your learning experiences. I really dislike trolls. And I really like you guys and what you are doing. Thank you!

Free flight scares me because of predators . Looks like you have safe places to do it. After so long without a parrot I’m looking for an older parrot in nyc. I’m watching all episodes on parrots. Thank you for what you do. If you come to nyc I’d love to see you. I’d like to be a part of a community where I am.

I loved this video seeing you both together! You are very inspiring with your charisma and love of what you’re doing. I’ve only been into birds for about five years and I never once thought about free flying or flight training. That was until I found your channel about a month ago and watched your videos; I absolutely agree with this! I would love to work with larger birds but for now I’m using your videos to help with my WB Caique :) Thanks for all you do ❤️

So happy I came across your bird training videos tonight. I've loved birds for years but have never focussed too much on the training before. Wild birds come to me and I feed them by hand. I currently have 4, 2 ringneck (the Porcini just came to us recently as his human momma could not look after him anymore and give him the time he needs), my female ringneck Poppet was a rescue bird, used to bite the crap out of me but several years and bites later, albeit still a bit nervous is such a gentle girl. i also have a female cockatiel called Peaches and my first bird Pingu is a black hooded nanday conure( I have had her since early 2015) who is my greatest challenge, due to becoming quite aggressive at certain months of the year (btw this was way before We got our male ringneck though), hence my looking at yourtraining vids. Pingu loves me deeply and we have been so close over the years and she is very affectionate but she becomes very hormonal I think around august every year (I'm in Australia). She is nippy and swoops me in and off for around three months every year. I want to get to why and how I can stop this behavioural pattern. So I think I need training 😂

I started watching your youtube videos and a couple of days later was at a bookstore and saw a parrot training book with videos and put it off I didn't know the author. seen Dave on a video and thought he looks familiar. Went back and bought the books and video and found out it was Chet and Dave Womach . then it all clicked Taming Training & Tricks was the same people from birdtricks . BIG FAN keep up the great work!

    Hi Jamie & Dave,
This was the best video for me because you addressed so many of the questions that I've wanted to ask!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤😍🤗
I grew up training courses as a child and thru my teenage years. I used the round pen approach that all of the 'real cowbodys' scoffed at and the cultural criticism was hard but I chose to trust my gut and focus my sights on the trust bond. I made mistakes and learned how to ask for forgiveness and respect the unique animal. That eventually evolved into teaching others. My personal philosophy has always been that the key is to teach the person how to continually train and bond with your animal over the years.
Then I went to college and became a speech therapist and began to realize that every experience with animals related to helping children overcome communication disabilities.
Now, I recently retired and had planned to return to horses but my circumstances didn't afford that avenue. But the cool thing is I stumbled on to your videos and both of you helped me to build an interest and desire to train a bird!
I began searching for a handfed quaker parrot and sent my deposit in for Oliver. He is 4 months old now and we have made good progress!
I have set goals for free flight based on a deep trust bond. It is challenging and rewarding!
I was laughing with both of you because I have wanted to shadow you two and maybe offer to bird sit and help out! Lol. 🤣😂 However, I live in northeast Texas. Paris area and it's a little far away but I hope to find a way to join y'all on a free flight trip or something.
Thank you for being strong enough to share your failures and to trust your instincts with animals! It helps everyone learn how to develop better relationships with our fur and feathered family!
    Lots of love ❤💞🙌🏻🤗
    Shelley

great video. i have been following since the early days. I spent 10 years looking into the issues and the upsides of owning a parrot (Always had cockatiels). your videos have helped me in may ways. once i decided to get one i eventually rehomed a Congo African Grey 5 years ago. best thing I have done

@@BirdTricks when I got 'baby' he was 7 years old and the previous owners had no idea of the requirements. Wth the bird and his cage the previous owners dropped off a 20kg bag of sunfour seeds. when I saw that I changed his diet straight away for a proper nut and dried fruit diet. he also had a few behavioural traits that I had to get out of him. its taken a while but with trust building and your videos ( that are a great reference) we are getting there. I havent purchased your training products..... yet, but I am thinking about it. as you know Greys are phobic about changes and new environments but i am wondering if your training products are centralised on the US market (in terms of buying extra's for the parrot). your videos are great and have helped me so much congrats for all of the work you put into them. they are worthwhile. If i lived in the US I would visit your shows
