I have a modern dual fuel system and it basically never calls for gas heat on its own. What does happen is that the heat pump system starts to run almost constantly and frequently has to reverse to defrost the coils, but it can easily keep up with the heat load even when the temp outside is in the low 20s. When the highs are going to be 20 that is usually about where I kick it over to gas manually, figuring that the operating costs are now about the same and I'm saving a lot of wear and tear on the heat pump by not forcing it to run so hard, but the thermostat normally doesn't ask for gas unless it is finding the heat pump can't keep up, and I've yet to find the point where it literally can't make enough heat because it is too cold outside.

As well, people need to realize comfort costs. Nothings free, no matter why high efficiency it is, and how well you have insulated and home sealed. As for your humidity amount, you have never been in Canada in winter. If you haev your house at 60% in the winter at -25, your house will quickly be destroyed. Humidity is a crap shoot between comfort and damage

A balance is what you want for humidity. If you’re over, it’s a problem, but if it’s too low it’s a problem for comfort also…. As well as during the summer if it’s too high it creates a different problem.. literally every season has a problem with humidity.

@@georgewelker2846 We just got done a cold snap in the prairies in Canada. So we had lows of -30, which while cold, isnt insane. According to science and the websites for humidity, house humidity should be 15% at the cold and colder. Living here all my life, Ill tell you how uncomfortable that humidity is on a person. Did I lower my humidity, yes, I was around 28% in my house, which isnt as low as "science" says, but still low enough to stop most window condensation. Humidifier was off a few days before this. And now with it over, Ill increase it. But most home owners wont do that unfortunately
