Thanks for this rarely seen gem. Unlike so many matches from that era, both Evonne and Cawly were smacking the ball using every square dimensions of the court. The groundstrokes were heavy and quick. Those volleys were struck hard and with great accuracy. Evonne will always be such a magical player to appreciate and love. What a strong example of a rare Aboriginal talent.
The new metal racquets elevated the game quite a bit. The shots here are surprisingly more precise and hit with much more pace than with the wooden racquets. Nice rallies by both players!
This has to be the only grand slam final where the game scores are called using their first names only. Even when Venus and Serena played it was always their first and last name.
Evonne Goolagong Cawley was my favourite player back then. Played a beautiful game. Her shots were so fluid, graceful and strong. In her early days on the tour, she was inconsistent. She never achieved the consistency of a Chris Evert, but she definitely had a more beautiful game to watch. Anyhow I think she still won 7 GS titles. She retired from the sport too early IMO. Maybe living in Australia had a lot to do with that decision.
doesnt need comparison to anyone least of all Chris Evert, when they played it was Mood V Method and Method will always win that battle however she defeated her 13 tims which is way more than most, and she was 'consistent' enough to win Wimbledon twice beating Court, King, Austin, Evert , Mandlikova, Turnbull etc and many others on the way to both and then you can add the two Year ending championships in 74 and 76, We should celebrate her many achievements not bag her fo being inconsistent, AND throw in two pregnancies which in effect meant she missed the 77 and 81 seasons. The 1980 Wimbledon total upset of Evert who was in red hot fom coming in with a magnificent win over Martina in the semi finals, is obviously the one that defined Evonne's glittering , if too short, career
@@martinpascoe7678 Take note of what I said in my comments, namely that Goolagong “was too inconsistent in her early days” on tour. However, thanks for illuminating her victories on tour.

The 70s was a low point of the Aus Open. The stars of the decade such as Evert and Navratilova skipped it and I guess the public saw it as second rate. The 80s saw the return of Evert and Navratilova and they packed the stadium in a few battles then from 88 onwards when it was moved to Rod Laver all the top players played
@@mitchrustad8839 They were the only marquee players in the tournament during those years. The rest of the field was so weak. Plus, Evonne had never lost a grass court match to Evert up to that point, and Navratilova was a mere shadow of the player that she became.
Many players have done it over the years. Gabriela Sabatini did it, Steffi Graf did it, and Chris Evert used to do it and actually drop one of the balls after she'd served. Wouldn't be allowed now.
Evonne was SUPER SPECIAL 💙
Such a humble champion.

Both 'EVONNE AND CAWLY' LOL
how about posting the '74 final with Goolagong and Evert, being the 50th anniversary, cmon would be amazing
Amazing to see how incredibly small the crowd was for a slam final and with evonne in it
the yellow looked great on Evonne, how beautiful she is here

Helen was a great athlete
The ball came to them so slowly they were able to get to the net. Not now, unless they hit a vicious approach.

Exactly right!
I don’t get why the video lists her name as “Evonne Goolagong” but she’s called “Cawley” in the footage
@@matthewmcalister2165 She was (is?) married to Cawley. Her official name is Evonne Goolagong Cawley. There's this thing called google search.....
I was struck by that too!
This is her married name.
Where is Helen Cawley nowadays, she looked a very nice person

She had a lot of nagging injuries after her pregnancies. That shortened her career.
Same here, my favorite Women's player. She made tennis beautiful to watch. Don't know Cawley, but she had game too. Great serve and volley.
Why does The AO never release the 1974 Final against Chris Evert?
I'm not even sure it was televised. I have not even seen a clip of match point!
yes and the AO never release it, many
thanks Brian

this looks like how i play tennis in games, doesnt work against pro level though
Well few considered Australian open a grand slam event at that time. Weak & small draw. It's like winning a WTA 500 tournament now. Lol😂😂
