    So while living here in a van in Australia I have come up with a few really easy and sometimes cheap ideas for making van life that much better. So here is a couple minute video showing a few of them, more to come!

    ABOUT ME I grew up in a cabinet shop and was born to be a woodworker. In the past few years when work slowed in the custom cabinet industry, I converted a few friend's Vans and SUV's so they had more storage for adventuring, work, or just the weekend beach getaway. Before I knew it I had my own business making people's ideas come to life. I design and build all kinds of custom woodwork and vehicles here at my shop in Huntington Beach, California! Please email me solidwoodworx@gmail.com for more information.

    I love this video in that it represents simplicity and practicality from a van builder. Normally you see "cool" gizmos and gadgets presented which are not really needed out in the field. Nice job!

    Build a bottomless cabinet, with a rack inside, obviously, over the sink. Then you wash them and put them away immediately. They can drip dry all they want.

    • @SolidWoodWorx
      @SolidWoodWorx  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ya that was the ultimate idea, but haven't got around to building an upper cabinet in there. But also with the upper cabinet blmy wetsuit wouldn't have enough room to hang dry, but for now this is working nice.

    Rather than plumbing, hang a solar camping shower bag over a portable basin. To create more work space, store everything away when it is not in use. Portable items create more open space for other activity

    Love the hanging above dish rack .... it’s kinda like.... how all dish racks should be! Another big plus you didn’t mention is it saves the limited counter space :) 👍

    Good stuff. Since this is my third winter in the high mountain meadows living in my 93 Dodge Caravan LE (Nellybelle) it's always fun to see what others come up with. The hooks are great. Don't overlook those temporary stick on types. They do well when affixed to interior plastics for small to medium loads.. A lot depends on whether you're gutting the van (starting from scratch) or modifying it within specs. I've kept mine fairly to specs with the major modification being removal of all but driver's seat. The subject of hooks is close enough to that of fasteners to mention the others I'm fond of. Velcro is my best friend, followed closely by bungee cords, peel and stick tape as well as the occasional epoxy. The utility of those plastic coated wire baskets is hard to overstate. Nellybelle is an urban expeditionary vehicle, the first of her kind (UEV). No plumbing. No bathroom. On board water storage: two gallons. No solar. One 120w cigarette lighter 12v to 120v AC adapter to recharge devices (laptop requires AC) and run the 32 inch TV. I'm considering the addition of more 'off-road' features in the future: solar and electric refrigeration. Great joy from the high mountain meadows of the Free People's Republic of Colorado. #hoboheretic Enjoy.

    It looks as if the basket would fit in the sink. Have you thought about doing small loads of laundry in the basket in the sink. Then lift basket to drain. Put basket back in wring clothes. Add fresh to rinse. Empty, wring, rinse, empty, wring, done.
    Use small amounts of water each time and wring well. Surprising how little fresh is required to rinse soap out if you wring well.

    Try a Pure water filter instead of the Bitter filter. It takes out more germs and lead.

    • @DennisMoore664
      @DennisMoore664 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for posting that. The Britta is fine for helping the taste of treated water but it doesn't reduce the levels of problem contaminates much if any. Pure is good and there are several other Backpacker filters that are specifically designed to purify water from untreated sources. Some sweet build ideas here - I especially liked the drying basket and the dual use of the shower spray.

Could you suggest anything to guide me through hooking up puck lights, USB outlets, maybe a control panel like yours but smaller? I have a 12v fridge/freezer and a 3000-watt inverter. how to know how much power battery/solar i need to run rice cooker, fridge and charge my laptop/mobile/camera battery?

    • @SolidWoodWorx
      @SolidWoodWorx  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would recommend you looking for a video or diagram showing how to add up your power needs to find out how many panels and size battery you will need

    • @HondaFit4Adventure
      @HondaFit4Adventure 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can purchase a kill-a-watt meter and find out how much power your devices consume or you can read the labeling on the devices and find out that way.
      Next you need to find out how many hours each one of those devices will be on each day.
      (Device power consumption x Length used = Total power used)
      From there you will want to oversize your battery because you don't want to run it down completely. You also want to make sure you have enough storage capacity to get by on those overcast days.
      In summary there's more information that is needed and more variables to take into consideration to answer that question.

    Great video, Brian. Subscribed.
    Is the only insulation on the walls in your van the carpet material? Or is it more decorative than insulating?
    I'm going to be stealth vanning in Sydney and Brisbane while working odd jobs so I can earn money to tour the coastline. After spending a summer in Australia, what would you suggest for insulation against heat, if you have an opinion? Do you think it's necessary in the city?

    • @SolidWoodWorx
      @SolidWoodWorx  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some sort of insulation is always necessary. The van I have here in Australia came with that carpet on the walls it works okay but it looks funky. I would insulate with some foam and leave a little air Gap and then some sort of wood on the inside would be best

    • @curiousme6898
      @curiousme6898 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. I was hoping you'd suggest foam because I like the idea of making my van as lightweight as possible. If I could convert it to full EV, I would. There are ChargePoint stations all over the place. I saw NØMAD's improved foam cabinets video and I'm going to give them a go.
      Just curious, is there anything (lifestyle, food, or ?) you're missing back in the US?
