Perhaps your question is rhetorical, but Kant formulated the categorical imperative along the lines of , 'Act only so the maxim of your actions would make a universal law.' He himself never traveled more than 30 miles from his home town of Königsberg. Therefore, never to travel more than 30 miles from your home town is a universal law, makes a neat syllogism.
Consider this alternative explanation: the bad situation (economy, intellectual brain drain) might not be a consequence of the presence of bad people, but rather, a cause. The bad economic situation caused by an aging population and an intellectual brain drain might have cause some people to radicalize and turn toward other alternatives (in their eyes) such as neo-fascism.
I have a difficult time believing that anyone would assume that Nomos supports fascism because of its geographic proximity to some fascists. Did the article you reference claim this? Can you post a link to the article? You repeatedly assert that Nomos "has a PR problem". I doubt it. It, I suppose, theoretically could have a PR problem IF some imbecile who was otherwise inclined to purchase a Nomos watch drew the unlikely, absurd and absolutely illogical conclusion that: Nomos is in Glashutte, Glashutte is in Saxony where there some extremists are located, and ergo, Nomos must sympathize with right-wing radicals (and I therefore won't buy one of their watches). That is silly. Isn't it more likely that Nomos is just using the influence it has (albeit relatively small) to promote progressive political policies, or at the very least, oppose fascist ideology? Corporations the world over do this sort of thing.
The article only reported that they are very concerned about their reputation and they now offer those workshops. They've also posted an open letter, wich i didn't know (my bad). nomos-glashuette.com/media/pdf/3f/8a/6f/Offener_Brief_Bundestagswahl_2017_AfD.pdf
I guess I still don't understand what prompted Nomos to send that memo. There must have been something to cause it but I don't think you mentioned it in your video, TIm.
Focus, man, focus! So...Nomos its Bauhaus in its more pure style. Hitler HATED Bauhaus (that "degenerate art"). Hitler closed the Bauhaus school in 1933. In 1937, Moholy-Nagy founded the "New Bauhaus" in Chicago. So...How is it possible that accuse Nomos of being Neo Nazi? Peoples perseptión is someting very strange, well, racism its someting very strange (I think that's basicaly fear) And thanks for believe i'm "fairly educated", I'm to feel happy of ve part of the horological world, a modest member of.
So the CEO of Nomos has taken a stand against hatred, racism and bigotry. This is surely a good thing. If some of Nomos’ actual or potential customers think this is a bad thing then they can piss off; Nomos is a better place without these kind of people. Calling out bigotry is not political, it is a decent human reaction.
Mad Man it can be, such as the recent sacking of a supermarket magazine editor because of a very bad joke about veganism. But in this Nomos case I believe that it’s just calling out hatred, not political correctness. I’d love an Orion with the blue hands - just to meander back to watch talk.
Incorrect. If one takes a CORPORATE stand on such a political hot-button issue, it is indeed political! You can attempt to boil it down to some simple, nice-sounding idea that we all agree with, but speaking out about something that has NOTHING to do with your product as a company is completely dumbfounding. If I had any stake in this company I would, now, be incredibly worried. What will they weigh in I next? Shut up and make watches, Nomos! Saying you support the obvious is not helpful here.
@Don Donald What you've got is a well constructed argument that sounds good but doesn't address what is really expressed by the person your comment is addressed to. There is technically no straw man here. I dunno why the internet pseudo intellectuals LOVE calling out others on alleged straw manning. Oh wait... never mind. Now the situation is simple and allow me to express it as simply as I am able to. A business makes a move that they are entitled to as an independently and privately operated business. The move is to take a stand against racism ... something all reasonable people will agree is bad (well my definition of reasonable). This move in itself does not necessarily mean that there is a racism problem, nor is it implying that racism is a frequent occurrence within the organisation. It is simply taking a publicly visible position on the social issue. Any opposition to the organisation making such a move IS in fact revealing of their position on the issue. If a person is against another saying racism is bad, does that seriously not reveal the attitude of that person? This is all that was meant by the poster above. And it is a fair comment. They did not make grand statements without justifying it like you have re communism and islam. Hateful ideologies and dangerous ones I agree with you on. But western ideologies throughout the ages and even today can be quantifiably be proven to be hateful and dangerous or at least conducive to such, as much as examples you have given. Almost leaning to real straw man there... ;) Of course a sharper mind will not be offended here because I never said communism and islam are not dangerous or hateful but they are no more or no less than any other ism at this point in our conversation. More have been murdered or died under the influence of westernism (if you will humour me) than any other ism and all other isms in modern human history. Just to play devil's advocate for sanity and intellectual honesty's sake. Of course we all are so inclined in our emotionally motivated blindness that is politics. So perhaps it's easier to just say, get fucked you half-wit.
Interesting video. I love Germany. I've been to Dresden twice. I was scared initially by the stories about the right wing etc. However, once I got there I was shocked how beautiful this city is, and how many tourists there are too. Easily the most beautiful city in Europe I have been to. All countries out there have their issues, some worse than others, however Germany gets more things right than most and I appreciate this country very much. I'm going to be buying Nomos, possibly Club Campas soon. I simply love the design aesthetic, and case back window, neomatik bidirectional date adjustment etc. Now, more importantly, when is the coalition going to legalise my sacred plants? ;-)
The real problem is actual located in certain people from the left wing, who generalize that people from Saxonia are located on the right wing. This forces Nomos to initiate these trainings, in order to prevent sales damages. I think these left wing people are as much intolerant and narrow minded by judging others based where they come from as the extreme right wing.
They definitely are, I'm not left wing or right wing but a lot of the left claims to be anti bullying and tolerant of everyone while in reality they're the biggest bullies and pull the "do as we want card or else"
Well done in tackling this topic head on, avoiding politics on a watch channel seems reasonable, but confronting far right ideas wherever they arise is essential. As some dead good dead dude once said for evil to flourish all it needs is that the good remain silent. Solidarity from the UK - no pasaran (don't know that in German, sorry!)
Hi Tim, Congratulations on the video. Politics is always toxic, but we should not be afraid to tackle these issues. Extremists are always the loudest bunch, but moderation needs a voice too. Glad that I found your channel, the watch hobby can be spiced up for sure!
Either Nomos CEO is using this stretchy logic as a lame excuse for rather obscene virtue signalling, or he is vastly overestimating how knowledgeable the world is about German geography and how bigoted the world is towards the people of his state. Hardly anyone outside of Germany knows what a "Saxony" even is, even fewer know that there is such a place as Glashuette inside it and that inside the town of Glashuette in Saxony there is a watch manufacture called Nomos. Also it isn't a fact that is well known outside of Germany that Saxons are to be looked down upon as alcoholic people lacking jobs and women but abundantly holding racist views. This type of anti-Saxon bigotry is, if it is commonly held anywhere, held mostly inside Germany itself and perhaps the German-speaking world at large in big cities, but not anywhere else. Not in my native country of the Netherlands anyway. As far as the average American is concerned I would be extremely surprised if he knew or cared about any of this. Unless Nomos has made in the past an identifiably anti-immigrant product, or maybe if one of their products is adopted as a piece of their group wardrobe by neo-nazis, they have no need to distance themselves from neo-nazi's. Why would you distance yourself from something with which you aren't actually associated? Off course this somewhat hysterical reaction is understandable coming from Germans. I see why there would be more of a need for them to distance themselves from this nasty part of their history and from anything similar to it. Sixty years of petty jokes at the Germans expense by the rest of Europe will cause some sort of trauma, and sometimes trauma misinforms action. But just because it is understandable doesn't mean it's a good idea, and I would argue that it is quite the opposite of a good to do this.
I'm confused about their association with far right extremists. Are they afraid they will be labeled right wing just because they are located in the same region as extremists? Or are they afraid they will inevitably employ extremists?
I've spent about a month in Germany and most Germans I've met have been fantastic people. Germany is well respected. It would be sad to see the right wing rise again in Germany. I respect Germany for rebuilding and acknowledging the mistakes of the past, more so than Japan which tends to white wash it's history. Of course i have great respect for German watch making as well.
Wow . Thank you for this video . I love history and politics . The same kind of thing is happening in parts of Canada . It is not bad yet . We don't have Nazies . Some of the things you say are so important . ( Funny also . The beer can become there are no woman. Wow. So right. ). Look at Russia now. All vodka drunks
Thanks. After editing the Nomos pictures for the intro i thought: I want one! Maybe it's that type of watch which needs a closer look to appreciate it.
My experience with them is limited. I like the Monaco, although it's too big for me. But i'd love to buy a vintage Heuer Chrono one day. Unfortunately they are extremely overpriced imho.
Great video, Tim. Good for Nomos. It shouldn't be controversial to stand up for basic human rights and dignity, least of all in Germany, but I guess in these dark days it is. Look at all of these people in the comments talking about immigrants committing crimes, when in reality Germany's crime rates are at the lowest they've been in 30 years: www.thelocal.de/20180509/what-we-learned-from-this-years-crime-statistics-and-what-we-didnt. Arguably a bigger problem is political violence, most of which comes from the far right and involves anti-Semitic attacks and/or attacks on immigrants. So it makes sense for Nomos to speak out against the far right. It would be terrible for the brand if their employees were found to be involved in these activities, so taking a proactive approach is sensible for the business as well as being ethically responsible.
I hate politics in generel and while I certainly do believe the far right is the problem, so is the far left who are just as violent and crazy. I think there's also a difference between people who want to flee war and live safely and start a new life and people who abuse the system and take advantage of it and cause trouble the country they're staying in. I'm all for helping actual refugees and for legal immigration, but for people who come to a country and just abuse it's resources that are for people who actually need help, I can't stand that. There's plenty of people who have claimed to be refugees who aren't refugees just to get into Germany or other European countries and then live off welfare - that isn't right.
You make some very interesting observations here, and has me thinking about the parallels in the United States, and elsewhere. Why, in general, do places with lower percentage of immigrants demonstrate higher levels of outrage about immigration?
The German Neonazi Sven Krüger once said on camera (about refugees): "When you know them, you can't hate them." And so consequently he stays away from them. Another explanation i've read: It's a consequence of evolution. The assumption that something new is dangerous, can help to survive. If you are not sure about the nature of a thing, it might be wise to stay away. Of course this behaviour collides with modern society but at the end people are archaic creatures. Some people bear this in mind, some not.
There are 2 ways of thinking about this . Canada takes in 350 000 a year . The right wing party wants to lower it to 150 000. I am voting right wing . I am not a racest .
Thanks, but i think the risk is limited. There are so many people out there with statements between bold and totally crazy. I find my comments in the video rather mild. My family worries more about the Putin video! :-D
@@CasebackWatches Just poking fun at you a bit! No worries. I do think companies should refrain from getting into politics. In the US, many companies have sided with one side of the political spectrum and are now suffering boycotts and lost revenue. Someone will always be offended and that will hurt profits. If companies make it known that they serve everyone and treat their employees fairly, I think that is enough. Politics, by definition, is about groups who differ with one another. Why pick sides? Further, senior executives who make these decisions have no special insight or knowledge on the issues, so why enter the debate on one side? I also think that our public life has become unnecessarily polarized, and companies who take political stands only make this worse. Watches are not inherently political so why make them so. For myself, now that I know Nomos has taken a political stand, I will be less likely to purchase one of their watches, not that I disagree with the stand itself, but that I think they should stick to what they know best. All the best.
Neither nor. It's called "Frohe Weihnachten" and can be translated pretty precise with Merry Christmas. Although it lost its religious connotation over the last decades. People use it rather to wish nice holidays, and so you hear even Muslims using it without feeling odd.
You are so right Tim . We all should be proud to be part of the watch community . We are not jerks . I have always loved Germany . I hope you can visit Canada someday . To see what a beautiful free country we have .
If "pride" is an invalid concept, then so should "shame" be, so why should Germany be ashamed of it's past if it's not allowed to be proud of its present? Nomos should stay out of the politics business.
You could be prejudiced against Saxons. Have you ever spent some time with some Saxons? You’re a long way away from Saxony. I understand some Saxoners complain about Hamburgers too. I myself have never been there. My Oma told me some nasty stories about what happened to them after the war. Westerners didn’t have a lot of sympathy. A bit sanctimonious and lucky I suppose.
You have some great outfits but why are you so lazy with the tieknots, in every video. i’ve seen the knot is twisted and then the tie is twisted and just doesn’t drape nicely. Perhaps it’s one of those Suitsupply ties, they’re cheap but they’re just not on par, you may want to look into Viola Milano, Shibuya Firenze, Drake’s and such, those ties are just the right fabric, weight and feel to make a perfect knot and most importantly, like their pocket squares, they’re hand rolled and once you switch to hand rolled edges anything else looks lifeless. And you can find them at a reasonable price, unlike the €200 E. Martinella, Viola Milanos can be had for €70 in their outlet or during sales.
Well, i don't find the perfect knot overly important. The tie in that video is simply too slim to make a nice four in hand. But i like the colour, so i ignore this little weakness.
Define "Right wing extremist" because I can see them calling anyone against mass migration from Africa and middle east being labeled "extreme". Seems standard self preservation to me. Europe shouldn't be commiting suicide. And it really seems like it is surrendering to the horde.
Right wing extremist in this case is a person outside the spectrum of democratic parties. It's basically a Neonazi with a clear connection to the NSDAP ideology and mostly under surveillance of the authorities.
Perhaps your question is rhetorical, but Kant formulated the categorical imperative along the lines of , 'Act only so the maxim of your actions would make a universal law.' You are so right Tim . We all should be proud to be part of the watch community . We are not jerks . I have always loved Germany . I hope you can visit Canada someday . To see what a beautiful free country we have .
Your friends were right.
Left Wing and boring watches. Even more reason to stay away
Left wing watches? That's a stupid comment.
Very stupid indeed.
"Boring watches" I'm afraid that not even an oral surgeon can fix your taste.
Wow the comments are terrible.
Thank you for the video
Define "Right wing extremist" because I can see them calling anyone against mass migration from Africa and middle east being labeled "extreme". Seems standard self preservation to me. Europe shouldn't be commiting suicide. And it really seems like it is surrendering to the horde.
Right wing extremist in this case is a person outside the spectrum of democratic parties. It's basically a Neonazi with a clear connection to the NSDAP ideology and mostly under surveillance of the authorities.
Define “the horde.”
