Not long ago I went to see the movie Skinamarink. Skinamarink adink, adink, Skidamarink a-doo, I love you...
It changed my entire life. i will never again be the same. My very brain chemistry was altered by the power of this terrifying horror movie. What happens in this movie you ask? Well I'll tell ya:) Lots of staring at walls and hallways. That's about it.

I interpreted the camera shots as it’s immersing the viewer, and putting the viewer into the children’s shoes. Also it plays like a nightmare and the graininess reminds me of how a nightmare feels, also the darkness that’s ever growing.

This is exactly why it’s so scary. The fears we have as children never really leave us, we just become better at rationalizing them. This film brings us right back to our worst fears as children
I would say as well that the camera is playing from two perspectives. One the children's and simultaneously the monster tormenting them, so we're never entirely on either side. Which is a very uncomfortable feeling, not knowing where you truly stand within the realms of the movie.
I went to a 9 PM showing of Skinamarink alone. I knew going in it might not be for me or not scare me, but I sat back, and gave it my undivided attention. I can honestly say this was one of the most jarring, terrifying, upsetting things I have ever watched. I was paralyzed by fear. When I was young, I would sometimes have vivid night terrors and this movie brought all of those feelings to the surface. I spent the entire movie with my shoulders bunched up to my neck and my heart pounding. As a lover of analog horror, found footage, creepypastas, and cursed images, Skinamarink felt like all of those things rolled into a longer format, and it worked.
This really seems like an allegory for child abuse.
That is exactly my current interpretation of the whole thing yeah.
The myriad of topics you've chosen to handle recently are beyond cutting edge. They are macabre, soul-searching, obviously provocative mind depth pieces done in professional, yet minimalist fashion. Another triumph for this channel, now truly worthy of outside consideration of notice to your talent far beyond your years . Your future is bright, and getting brighter with each delving into a new psyche of the human experience. Keep exploring. The world may end up coming to you.

My interpretation was that both Kaylee and Kevin may have been enduring physical and sexual abuse from their dad. He was playing twisted psychological games with the both of them like the “look under the bed” scene Or when he says, “I want to play” referring to the LEGOS and then the teddy bear(or bunny?) drops to the floor. Abusers like to embed cues into their victim’s mind thus making them connect exact moments when said abuse will occur. As Kaylee states,“I feel strange”. Kaylee most likely spoke up about this abuse and ended up with the punishment of no eyes or mouth in her afterlife body/vessel; she can no longer “see no evil nor speak no evil”. Reminiscent of the kid that had his tongue cut for “speaking evil” in Wes Craven’s film, ‘The People Under the Stairs’. Another implication of sexual/physical abuse is that of their mother appearing at the edge of the bed with her back turned, she can’t even turn around to look her daughter in the face, as she carries a lot of shame and had become very aware of the abuse her husband had been dishing out, perhaps even partaking in the abuse as well; as she states to Kaylee, “close your eyes”.
There’s a film from 1988 called ‘Nuts’ featuring Richard Dreyfuss that immediately came to mind; the story is a woman kills a guy in self defense and then the whole film revolves around a courtroom drama. It’s revealed that her father was sexually abusing her for years. Before the Sex acts would occur he would give his daughter money to keep her quiet and her mother was very aware of what had been going on. Underrated film, IMHO.
Also, the toilet disappears then two buckets appear, it immediately made me think of a news story where a couple in Florida had their child chained up in their basement and he endured years of abuse. One of the things the police found when they recovered his body is a bucket that he had been given to him to use as a toilet.
The stair fall scene with Kevin, right before he fall Kaylee asks “are you hiding?” Why would Kevin be hiding if Kaylee said to her dad that he was sleepwalking when he fell? as their dad claims on the phone call. I think perhaps it was a demon(dad’s inner demon) inflicting one of his many abuses and pushed Kevin down the stairs. The “put the knife in your eye”, slashing blood on the carpet and bloody window(or wall?) scenes are implying their murder, as dad went on a rampage then takes his own life. Kevin did muster up the strength to call 911, but drops the phone, perhaps that was the moment he passes over.
The family has been in a sort of home bound purgatory(doors disappearing, toys floating, cartoons on repeat loop), but then their guardian angel(look up angel number 572 in numerology) at the end appears to free the children’s soul, as she states “go to sleep” as if to say you can go to the light now, children; or maybe they go to sleep wake up and the same cycle repeats over and over. I’ll stick with the they went to the light theory, as gives me more closure to this interpretation.
Also need to mention that this wasn’t my initial interpretation. I was going along the lines of the Insidious films, on a purely paranormal path of dissecting it. After 3 viewings I’ve been just blown away at how many different ways this film can be interpreted. A work of art, IMHO. 🤌💋

I wish I got to see this movie when it was in cinemas. Also I agree, watching a movie in an empty cinema makes the experience so much cooler. My local cinema recently aired the Truman show and almost no one showed up. One of my favorite cinema experiences yet.

I really enjoy horror, but unfortunately cannot watch it since it is able to affect my day-to-day life in negative ways; but I really enjoy the concepts, themes, and ideas that horror presents, as well as the emotions they bring up in the audience. Analysis videos and explanation videos help me intake horror media in a manageable way that allows me to enjoy it where I otherwise would be unable to, so Thank You for making this video! Analog horror is some of my favorite style and genre, to the point where I've even tried watching the media itself here and there. Always an enjoyable experience to see even if I have to mitigate the experience a little by watching with friends and the lights on lol

Analog horror (and most horror) can be really fun to watch with friends haha. There's a lot of entertainment in even the really bad ones when watching with a group imo
I agree with you, I’ve always been super susceptible to nightmares so I instead watch analysis, summary or theories on it even if I haven’t watched it, it’s almost like reading around the subject to understand instead of just watching the horror.
I also cannot watch a lot of horror films and probably can’t watch this one but I enjoy listening to the concepts of the horror bc the art of it is beautiful.

Agreed I have adhd and one of my symptoms is having almost no control over my thoughts. Things tend to come up into my brain at the worst times. So scary movies tend to come out at night. This movie is a nightmare even the trailer bugged me.
The short film Skinamarink is based on is called "Heck". Seems like an obvious clue. That short is amazing and has one of the biggest jump scares I've ever seen.
What would you say was the jump scare in Heck?

I love that when people talk about their experiences of seeing the movie in theatres they'll mention something along the lines of how many people were also in the theatre. I work at one where you sit down and order your food in the theater. The day before I planned to see it, my co-worker told me she was so scared she had to leave. The next day, I come alone and the theatre is empty aside from myself, it was raining so hard that you could hear it through the walls and that same co-worker is my server. She immediately points out that I came by myself and then told me that was a bad idea. I think it being alone in a dark room with rain bulleting down and mixing into the movie's audio atmosphere was the best possible way to watch Skinamarink. I'm new to horror movies but I don't think I'm easy to scare but by the time the sever came back to drop the check, just her walking up the stairs and into my peripheral felt like the entity taking over the house was reaching to get me, too. By the time "The End" appeared on the screen and the lights came on, I was in a fetal position in my chair and looking between the gaps in my fingers. Like your experience of talking with strangers about the movie, I stayed behind while the server set up for the next showing and we talked about how confused but entranced we were.
Horror isn't really my genre, but you present things so well I am compelled to watch your presentation. I don't think I'll watch Skinamarink, inasmuch as my own demons are terrifying enough, but I'm glad you are here to guide us through this.

I got demons but I watch scary movies so that way I can tolerate them more easily. It helps a lot and I think skinamarink was one of those films that showed my fears in a completely new way.
What I like about this movie is, unlike many mainstream horror movies, it doesn't have much of a discernable message. It's strictly here to make you uncomfortable and keep you up at night, saying "wtf did I just watch".
Honestly very surprised how much this movie freaked me out. I've been a horror fan since middle school and I've seen some really intense shit (Martyrs, Cannibal Holocaust, etc.). When I went home after seeing it in theaters I had to sleep with the lights on, and I haven't had to do that in years.

Same here. I go out of my way to try to find the scariest, most unsettling horror movies out there, but this one made me sleep with the lights on as well. I hadn't done that in years, the last time being when I was scrolling through too many nosleep reddit posts. It goes to show that the less I see, the more scared I get. My imagination is scarier than anything that can be shown.

after seeing both skinamarink and heck, i do have to say that while skinamarink is more *scary*, heck is just outright depressing. both of them invoke a primal kind of dread, though.
Just saw the movie a couple of days ago, and something you forgot to mention at about 6:39 was how not only the visual scare but also the audio scare work together.
After a literal hour or so of nothing but static, footsteps, and low voices, the loud jumpscare noise sounds 10x louder than it actually is.

As a long time supporter of foreign and independent films, I agree with your commentary about the majour film industry today especially the regurgitation remakes that leave my mind screaming "Where are the fresh creative films?!" If you find them, they'll most likely be in the indie art house cinemas where I feel totally at home. I will confess that I have walked out of a film in a chain theater but only once a long time ago.

David Lynch uses infrasound in a lot of his films and I heard this movie used it as well. It’s a hum or droning sound that is just below a person’s threshold of hearing and it causes anxiety. So you feel anxious when you are watching the movie but don’t know why. I got a headache the first time I watched “Eraserhead” and didn’t understand why. But subsequent views made me realize I get a headache every time I watch it. I believe it is the background infrasound.
It definitely does, there's a lot of static and droning buzz, although I wasn't aware there was more inaudible sound as well. This movie reminded me a little of Lynch's stuff actually

Skinamarink plays on so many primal fears. As you watch it, you recall the fear of the dark (and the things you imagined lurking through it) when you were a child, and at the same time you (as an adult) are terrified for the children because you are unable to protect them from what is happening.. At least that is the case if you accept the events unfolding in the film at face value. Skinamarink is so unbelievably ripe for audience interpretation.
I started watching the movie at midnight the other night, and got just before the reveal of Kaylee’s face before my roommate started going to bed, making me go “YES, thank you, perfect” and I shut my laptop so quickly and turned off my lamp. I then got really paranoid cause I wasn’t even halfway through the movie and I just shut off all of my lights to go to sleep. I then finished it the next day and ( having spoiled the events for myself ), I spent the remaining hour just terrified and sobbing over these poor children’s fates. I think the movie’s an excellent piece of horror but by the time the fisher price phone showed up, I wasn’t even scared of it. I was crying and pissed off at it, cursing it out for how it tortured those kids. Now any time I get paranoid of it, I think of it like the ending of the Babadook ? I imagine the phone and then start cursing it out in my head as though it’s powerless to do anything in that smaller form. I love this movie so much though, it’s ruined my life in the best way
I used to hate horror movies because the only horror I knew were slasher films. But over the past few years I’ve been introduced to more psychological horror stuff and it’s made me enjoy the genre a lot more. And although this movie seems absolutely up my alley I genuinely don’t think I would be able to stomach it. I’m saying that in the best way possible. It’s amazing that a movie with such a low budget is able to become what it is.
Yeah, the indie nature makes me want to shout from the rooftops, it's so freaking cool that this was possible.
Three skulls on Shudder... This movie is not only one of the best pieces of horror media TO DATE but it's also being heavily slept on by these so-called "horror fans". Fml! this story needs to be treasured.

Something about the way the movie is filmed with the liminal spaces in that house setting immediately sends me into a C-PTSD induced panic attack - so personally I can't bring myself to watch it in full. But, this kind of thing, a review of the content and effects and breaking down possible meaning, helps a lot! And also I can listen in the background without immediately wanting to throw up or hyperventilate in a room with every light on and every possible window and mirror covered :3

The cinematography reminds me of those nights I wake up from a nightmare drenched from sweat and have to go downstairs to get water. The pure tension as your eyes dart around the familiar environment that’s now dark is something unique. The dark makes you question whether or not the thing you saw quickly darting across the floor is your imagination or not. It’s something I haven’t had in a while, however watching Skinamarink brought all those memories flooding back.

I took the chance and just finished watching the movie and I was just so tense the entire time. I don't know how to explain it, it was unsettling but it was worth the watch. I also had a weird feeling of nostalgia which I can't explain but this was super interesting for sure. it makes me curious for what's to come.

Also the phone jumpscare. My ears. Owie. I like skinamarink, it feels nostalgic. It makes me miss my childhood home and the kid that used to live there. I hope she's okay, even though I know she wasn't.
I’ve never once been so shaken up by a movie. Sure, it dragged on at points, but when this worked, it worked WELL.
I’ve loved horror my whole life but sweet Jesus. I Haven’t been this scared since I was a kid. The familiarity of every single thing about the movie just makes everything visceral. I couldn’t look away for the whole damn thing.
I LOVE how they only use loud noises or jumpscares every once in a while, making you believe you’re safe, and after the very first jumpscare, you know what they’re willing to do, so you know somethings coming, but not knowing when, or if it will do it again. So you’re on edge and tense the whole time.
i REALLY enjoyed the last 30 minutes, it captured a sense of horror i used to only feel as a child at night. however, the first hour of build up dragged on way too long for me, and got pretty frustrating. i completely understand building tension, but an entire hour was a little much.
i really liked how i was always straining to see something in the dark, and how i was rewarded every time i really did see something. and i really love the concept of a reality bending demon or monster that’s simply just toying with its victims. the scene where blood splattered on the wall, the entity shrieks, and then it resets 4-5 times really solidified the idea that it’s able to reset time, therefore extending the torture forever
I watched skinamarink in theaters a couple days ago and I have never been so tense during a whole movie, I'm so glad I brought a blanket because I needed the comfort. When it was over I literally couldn't move until I heard the 1 other person in the theater grab his stuff and go. 10/10 loved it and loved your review

there's these moments ( the quiet scenes) in skinamarink that pry on childhood fears, creeping in the hallways, looking for your parents, terrified of a sibling who sleepwalks. honestly the first part of the movie is my favorite i could feel my chest tightens, unnerved to even breath, my eyes rolling over the shots of dark hallways over and over again. constant state of anxiety and mind you there's NO relief. i love it.
the second part fell apart for me when the entity started talking and we got to see kaylee's face and all. yet you pointed that the phone changing to the toy phone damn i didn't notice that it changed, that is so cool.

eek! saw this in the theater and had an audible reaction to that play phone jumpscare!! I don’t tend to spook too easily anymore but this movie had me on the edge of my seat. I found that the length of the film was intentionally long and disastrous; it felt like a hell I not only couldn’t escape from but couldn’t look away from either. I had to know how it ended, and for some reason I couldn’t let go of the hope that it would end more pleasantly despite the mounting evidence that it wasn’t gonna be pretty for those poor kids. Such a great video :) glad I found your channel !!

Brilliant analysis! This movie bypasses the conscious mind and aims directly for the subconscious. Watching it was exactly like sleep paralysis, as you said. For several minutes after it ended, I couldn't move and was holding my breath. Amazing, terrifying movie.

It feels even wrong to consider this a “horror movie” as it has somewhat silly connotations. This movie felt downright demonic. Evil. You gave some amazing insights into why it affected me so much. Great video, and I pretty much concur with everything you said 🙂 I'm definitely rooting for Kyle to get the opportunity to do something bigger and better. I was really neutral on the movie but I will say that the 'bedroom sequence' had me inwardly reduced to a scared peek-through-my-fingers-like-I'm-5 years of age- state and it is done so masterfully that it will probably resonate around my noggin for quite some time. Hopefully not when I'm going to sleep later on my own :D

What a good video! I know you didnt have time, but i really would have appreciated discussing the childlike cruelty of the entity- Its not the typical "demon from who knows where", it seems to be learning its own powers as it goes, and expresses a childlike glee towards the usage of its powers to torment these kids. Its unlike most of these types of villians by not having a sense of enjoying its immortality- It has kid logic- The equivalent of tearing wings off a fly for fun. Which makes the film only scarier.
you know i absolutely love horror. i grew up watching horror and its one of the only things i ever watch! (alongside comedy) but the thing is, i have never seen anything as disturbing. because normal horror movies are not that terrifying, even if they are scary you know whats gonna happen. but this, this is actually horrifying. i want to watch this but it looks as if i watch it im not gonna sleep for a looooong time haha. the noises and the feel of it are so real making it even a worse experience. ill probably watch it but i definitely am not doing it alone. thanks for the great commentary again :))))))))

This sounds like such an amazing experience and I really wish I had the patience and attention to detail to watch it. If by any chance you're into analog horror in general (y'know, instead of just enjoying the outstanding ones), may I recommend the Vita Carnis series? It's a bit lacking in horror at times, but I just enjoy it all the more for that. I'm sure you'll understand why if you decide to check it out. It also contradicts itself once or twice, but if you really want, you can wave it away as the government not wanting people to panic or new information coming to light.

I found an analog horror series that like recently just started. It doesn’t have a name but it’s really interesting and I really suggest watching it. It will probably keep you up at night though lol

It feels like the horror genre is sort of returning to where it was in the 80’s with indie films like Terrifier 2 and Skinamarink getting such successful theatrical releases. Terrifier 2 is the first time we’ve had an unrated gorefest in such wide theatrical distribution since films like Maniac, The Evil Dead, Day of the Dead, Re-Animator, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, etc.

watched this movie with the homie while high in a pitch dark room on a windy night awhile ago and honestly? it was a great experience. i got super immersed and the wind shaking the windows a bit that night along with other house noises going on in reality in addition to the movie was such a great atmosphere to accompany the watch. the beginning hella reminded me of a depersonalisation/derealisation episode.

Ooohhhh mmmaaannn I'm still got my hair standing up and the chills. What a great indie movie!!!! This director and producer are going to get calls from Jason Blum and guirmillo Del Toro if they're not working for them already. This is way better than paranormal activity series. I'm usually not disturbed by most movies but this one,terrifier 1,creep, and tusks made me very disturbed and that's saying alot.
I saw it in theater tonight and we also all stayed in our seats for at least a few minutes after the end, terrified and unsure. And I also immediately started talking to a stranger on the way to the women's bathroom about it haha. The bathroom was very disorienting and backrooms-y so it kept the vibe going

I’m excited to hear your theories. I have two main theories. One follows the theme of abuse I’ve seen often but added in that the mom ended her life because the dad was abusive towards her and once she had, he directed his abuse to the children, first towards Kaylee mainly as she the older of the two. And maybe he accidentally kills her and takes his anger out on Kevin. The second one being, it’s simply a visualization of Kevin’s night terrors after he falls down the stairs. Not that he’s in a coma but simply he starts having these vivid nightmares.
Ooooo touching on the house expanding and there being no end. One of my reoccurring dreams (I wouldn’t say it’s a nightmare but it’s very unsettling everytime) is that I’m in a house upstairs in my bedroom and I open the closet and climb into another room and another room and each opening to each room is smaller and smaller but the rooms change everytime and it seems there’s no end to this home in my dream.
Sometimes I think it’s bc I live in a house for like 3 years without actually going into one of the rooms in the house so never knowing what was in there (it was just a bedroom with a bathroom and closet) but my mind had to fill in the gaps without actually seeing what the inside of the room looked like.
…and then I get to the part of the video where you say your brain fills in gaps lol I think that is the truest thing, that you can scare yourself more than anyone else can.
I watched it and fell asleep halfway through.
This was a great movie. I watched it alone at 2 am in a home that was close to where this was filmed. Great horror experience!
I wonder if this is how the upcoming Five Nights at Freddy's movie is going to be like. All these constant camera shots of the house almost look like security surveillance. Just change the setting to a family restaurant after closing, add in some scary animatronics moving in a inhumane fashion (maybe some jumpscares too), show arcade cabinets display some disturbing imagery and there you have a rough idea for a FNAF movie.
It sounds as if this is a new indie art form - the way the Blair Witch Project's breakthrough kick started a wave of "lost footage" movies, as well inspiring the Supernatural Activity series.
I hope it does mark the beginning of a revival

So this movie is basically a depiction of a typical night for me with psychotic PTSD symptoms. Kidding (not really) aside, I think I'll like this movie a lot because of how much I relate to it in that sense of having had sleep paralysis nightmares and bad paranoia. I was excited when I saw the trailer because this is the kind of horror I dabble in myself because of my own experience with mental health. I live in a really old house, and often I've tried to make short horror films in artistic ways, just like this, but ended up trashing everything because I thought it would be boring. Skinamarink might just make me dig up all my old footage again. Can't wait to see this movie.

Went to go see it and there were only two other people that bought tickets, they showed up talked during the film then left 30minutes in and it was awesome to be so alone in a huge theater
Skinamarink is frightening because it reminds so many of us of our first nightmares. It sure as fuck reminds me of my first nightmare
The thing about no doors or windows-- that was a recurring element of my nightmares where I would hide behind a door or piece of furniture and then the monster would be coming for me and suddenly the door or furniture vanished and I was in the open and vulnerable. Anyone else have something like that?
