i feel really bad for everyone on this thread who can’t identify the genius that is Sunny ... creating form and melody in real time along with full expression of hisself. not many people can do this or understand it, making him truly a master and an innovator in freedom music
There is a Sunny Murray interview where he talks about these gigs. Apparently he liked to set his drums up offstage to warm up before he played on stage. He liked to warm up for a long time. On this occasion he set up in the theatre's basement and some people came to watch. He said one guy offered him a joint of some really strong weed - so when he got on stage he was well and truly stoned. He is also the only drummer I've seen who sets his snare drum up higher than his Tom Tom ^_^
It's what comes from within. Jazz is the only medium that's free flowing and yet structured there is a structure there are rudiments there is technique but sometimes someone comes along that incorporates fundamentals mixed with improvisation that excites me as a drummer. Don't discount this style if you will of an approach to the drum set and it's playing as it can open to us in a larger sense what we are within us what we feel as Sunny reveals that to all of us all. Simply said the greatest musicians always cause their audience to feel what they' are saying rather than just playing prescribed notes and sounds. Music is feeling and invokes in us emotion that brings us out of ourselves and perhaps a moment or two of clarity of what we really are. Amen
did he know his vocalizations would be picked up on the mics? I'm curious if that's part of the music he intended or if that's like chick corea & roy haynes moving their mouths while they play I wonder if Jack DeJohnette considers Murray a direct inspiration, this sort of free form
Okay now!! Everybody have the notation down for this now? There will be a quiz tomorrow. Better have practice it!!! yeah. anyway. I wonder what Buddy Rich or Louie Bellson thought about his performances. Seems like some of the best drummers had or have, ADHD, bipolar, OCD, ect. But this guy is normal. So he takes it to a route the rest of us don't get. We make the algorithms work to make a low frequency form of harmony and pitches. but this, which is what I did here^, when I was around 20 and trying to find some identity, on many levels. Then I thought it out and made mental illness work "for" me, not against. just sayin'.
+mellilore it definitely is more along the free-form/textural playing and I get that you have to be feeling a certain mood to get into these kind of performances.
You have to remember the period. Coltrane's "Om" was on the cutting edge. Drum solos were telling a story, or were an expression. It was a little beyond say....the drum solo in the middle of Moby Dick. Think of it as more of a meditation than anything else. It makes sense in that context
Some music is like abstract paintings: Only the creator truly understands what it means and can truly feel it. Some people who observe may connect with it in a way, whether they understand what the composer/performer is doing, or if they just like the sounds they hear. Other people maybe just don't get it. It goes the same for many things, movies, sports, politics. All opinions are subjective.
Pak Ombak, I'm a seasoned musician. I play many styles of music. I enjoy many styles of music. I have friends from all over the musical spectrum. The "drumming" this guy did was nothing less than complete nonsense.
Clearly you know more than Art Blakely, Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and many others who all saw his genius and employed them in their bands. This guy was one of the key pioneers of free jazz, if you don't like the music it's your own taste but you're clearly wrong if you believe this guy is a bad musician.
Energy being sent to the universe. Fantastic! Love freedom

hi
UNIQUE
People are free not to like it, and to say so as well. Me, I'm used to it.
Himself, you're so bl...🤣🤣

I put on this and Steve Lacy solo at the same time and I'm in heaven...
Great idea I bet they both would have dug it.

Bro created blast beat even before blast beats were a thing... Or even before Grindcore or Blast-Hardcore Punk was a thing.
I like to see a moment of creation so intense. His mind and body is in flow motion: sound, rhythm, expression, a pure performance.
i feel magic rituals. incredible sound.
The greatest will live forever.
cymbal work not heard much from other drummers the incorporation of cymbals and drums is very unique here
Stewart Lee, huh? He's a genius
That's why I'm here too!
drummer on acid seeing rainbows and dragons and shit
Ray Jones true
love how his solo ended because he accidentaly drops a stick.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The amount of creativity he has behind the set is just incredible. Where does he get his ideas from? it's outrageous! love this guy :D
Cocaine is a helluva drug....
A whole lot of letting the physical feelings of playing like this dictate what happens
This video used to come up as an option if you loaded the phrase 'Blast Drumming In Jazz' into the search engine.
So deep freedom of the mind priceless
blast beat
Just great. I loved him.
Was a cute little bow at the end that he knew it wasn't all that good. LOL
10:06 no mic so the stick drop will do.
My teachers always said sing the melody when soloing ...
did he know his vocalizations would be picked up on the mics?

Great improviser...

I don’t know about Buddy, who was a well known asshole, but no doubt Louis appreciated genius when he saw it.
Maybe it is the edibles but I totally ”get” this now.
power, hurricane
❤💥💥💥💥
Ooooo eeeee oooooooooOOoeeeeeeee
Nice
9:33 playing so hard the cymbals fall off somebody else's kit
That was intentional - he looked at it just before it fell, and thought, 'that thing should have fallen by now'. The magic of Sunny Murray.
I didn't see anything fall at 9:33.
@@dbadagna
But there was something falling: His cymbal, which he placed on his floortom..9:36
@@marceibel1131 Oh, I see. Why was there a loose cymbal on his floor tom?
Aaoo ooo
Where's one?
It’s all one
🌸🙄🌱💛
then....?
I ain’t feeling it.
Is he trolling?
Huh?? Groove?...
Maury Baker Your ears are square.
Sounds like the drummer in The Shaggs.
And you sound like an idiot
I must be too fool or too ignorant, as I can't see here any form of art, creativity or technical ability. I'm quite sorry for myself. No irony.

The only reason I take this seriously is cause he signs to himself. If you take that seriously this becomes beautiful
😢iyeah this. N7
òise plain. Alls noise Sunny Murraý was
simple no creativeity at all
His solo sounds like what a seizure looks like, that poor man.
What a joke. This is no different than the neighbor coming over and pounding on the drums. Pathetic
Lol... such limited mind set

thats cool... I can consider your "resume" complete nonsense also :)
and/or pathetic

Almost as good as my five year old boy!
This has to be some kind of joke
