I just love how you somehow can see the connection between this book and The silent patient, like they are from the same universe. Mentioning Theo at the end of The maidens, who is the protagonist of The silent patient, was an amazing twist as well. I first read The silent patient, then this book, so I loved this sudden connection between the two of them.
The ending had me fully gobsmacked, I didn't see it coming either! Whether it's a sequel or some new thriller I can't wait for this author to release something new. The Silent Patient also took me by surprise.
It was the first book i read in english. The whole mystery comes with two situation of both grief and loss. Mariana realised the fact what she loves being cheated and the culprit was hidden beside of her ultimates the end. The climax got the idea of what a childhood behavior influences to a person whether who best or worst. The whole story contains Greek mythology and little diary hints which makes more thrilling.
You asked about the possibility of a sequel or something of that nature. If you've read Alex Michaelides' first book, The Silent Patient, you probably recognized some of the references in the latter half of the book. Specifically, Mariana's therapist sends her to the London forensic therapist, Theo, who says he's dissatisfied with his current job, and Mariana has a psychiatric journal with an job posting that he might be interested in at an institution called The Grove, where an infamous killer, an artist who shot her husband five times and then stopped speaking, is confined. This is the basic setup for The Silent Patient. Theo gets a job at a new sanitarium, The Grove, where he treats the titular Silent Patient and, like Mariana, decides to play detective and investigate her past to find out what's going on. At the same time, he suspects his wife might be cheating on him, so he begins following her around to identify who it is, becoming obsessed with both his patient and his wife's infidelity. It has one of my favorite twists in modern thrillers, right up there with The Plot and Behind Her Eyes. I'm glad you enjoyed it. It didn't work for me, but we all have different tastes, and I'm happy for anyone who gets joy out of their reading.
I had guessed the twist, but I still enjoyed the story..except it felt like the writer was kind of trying to get Zoe off the hook by saying she was also a victim. While she was a victim, she still committed crimes and does need to pay for her crimes. I wish we had a chapter or two from Zoe's POV I did like the rom com element between Fred and Mariana...it helped provide a bit of light to a dark story.
For me personally I loved part of the protagonist character flaws, how her ignorance and tunnel vision affected her choices. at least she was consistent. but I also hated it in some ways, I hated how she put herself in needlessly dangerous situations, I hated how she was a therapist with a degree but her boundaries were soft and sometimes she came off as a doormat to the people around her without a voice or agency. the only time I did see her standing for her thoughts and opinions was when she finally went crazy in front of the suspected party and police. overall I loved the twist I loved how it show cases that we can be ignorant in situations and go on witch hunts. but I also thought some of the character flaws were unintentional and just showed poor writing. the overall story though and the way the author writes is beautiful and I would read it again and purchase a hard copy
I just read the first two chapters and got bored because I thought it was Zoe the killer and thought maybe Sebastian was alive, so I stopped reading the book now 6 months later after watching this video,😁 "I WAS RIGHT" #Time saved
Both the silent patient and the maidens are lit as hell. I lov d reading in the proper order like I started off with silent patient and smashed the maidens. Now there is one more recent addition to the Alex michealides " universe "the fury" is up my alley . Can't wait to read it since it is also spin off kinda to the silent patient and the maidens . BTW girl I am gonna imagine you as Mariana while I read the maidens again. 😅
I didn’t care too much for this book. 4/10 in my opinion. I just hate the way it was rushed and ended. And the way her husband died was so crazy and sometimes it stretched things too far. Whether that be her meddling in police investigations with no consequence or Fosca having a cult of attractive girls and no one looking into that further when his girl were being murdered. All in all it was interesting!! And I didn’t hate it, just didn’t make any sense and the ending pissed me off. The exposition Zoe had to go through for us to understand was ridiculous, And ur telling me Mariana was this amazing therapist but never once caught on her husband was a pedo killer weirdo? Yeah no way haha. Fun book tho!
That's totally fair! There were a lot of flaws with the plot, I was just so shocked by the ending! I'm curious if my opinion would be the same if I read it again.
This writer's books contains twists that make no sense at first, but when you think about it, it makes a lot of sense at the same time.

I am not a fan of unreliable narrators, but I did like the twist in the story, and agree with you that it shows how we can be ignorant!
That was a good twist in the maidens I loved this book
Same! I was captivated!
