    I have a soft spot for these mildly tuned cars. They aren't stock but however claiming that a stock car is perfect is BS and we all know that. However by addressing the weaknesses of said stock car & fixing that (e.g. the body rigidity & the spot welds) while making small but little improvements everywhere else. This is in my opinion, tuning in its most refined form. Pure respect for tuners & owners who have cars like these.

      tuning goals should be making a car that feels like a "cup version" from the factory. some very slight optical stuff and mostly handling stuff and maybe 50hp plus max.

      Im 24 years old now and wanted a Subie like this since im 12.
      I owned a 105hp Impreza Wagon when i was 20.
      A year later someone crashed into me, so i got a 109hp Hatchback Diesel.
      But i was always unhappy with it, so last week i sold my Diesel and got a 1999 Impreza GT Turbo Wagon GF8 with 260hp instead.
      This thing will make me broke as fuck, 18mpg/ 15L/100km.... (double the diesel)
      But i love it, it is better than i expected it to be.
      This pure driving feeling is something else, and im mad at new cars that they cant give you this feeling anymore....

    Even if my 99 RS is only stock with 320,000 miles and a body that looks like its been through both world wars, I still love it to death. This video demonstrates to a higher extent that feeling, and i am determined to obtain something nearly identical to this, i cant fathom the feeling of twice the power, all four wheels spinning, but still rocketing forward and out of corners like nothing else, all the way past 7k with the unmatched sound of the flat 4. The only place ive been able to experience the benefits of the drivetrain and not burn up my clutch in acceleration is in the snow, and even though ive only gone out once in it- i cant wait till the next time. The feeling of rotating around a corner and mashing the throttle, and having your wheels clawing at the snow, throwing it all out of the way and pulling yourself through, defying apparent physics... like no other feeling.

      Don't you have 98 octane fuel in America. He said run it on 91 or 93. It's not meant for that low octane. It says so in the owners manual.

    • @brendancrosby2965
      @brendancrosby2965 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@_wallnutz_ Octane ratings are measured differently in the US. Japan and some other countries ONLY use the RON rating while in the US octane is the average of RON and MON, there's a small math equation on american gas pump buttons that refer to this "(R+M)/2 method". MON octane rating is basically always a lower number, something under 90. Since the EJ207 cars were really only sold in countries that used RON exclusively, the owner's manual is specifying 98 RON gas. There are certain parts of the country where 93 octane is somewhat available, and that rates as 98 on the RON test,. Anywhere else where that gas isn't available, which is most of the country, you simply can't roll up to the local gas station and fill your freshly imported JDM dream car with gas that will make the engine happy. Most people don't consider this, they run their old JDM car on 91, and then wonder why their JDM car/engine blows after a few thousand miles. EJ207 cars that were imported specifically to Australia (which I don't think has 98 RON equivalent gas) came with knock sensors, while they otherwise wouldn't have them in other markets. I could be wrong, MRT performance has a video where they talk about it, they're honestly the best youtube source of info on old STIs.

    • @_wallnutz_
      @_wallnutz_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brendancrosby2965 Yes, I have checked since this. American 93 rating is equal to Australia 98 rating. They are actually the same. America just has to have it's own unique system like with Imperial to Metric.

      As far as I know the difference between the GC8(GM8) and GDA/GDB is almost all structural, the mechanicals are very similar [that is for a EJ20 car vs EJ20, and not the EJ25]. 200lbs of more structure for both rigidity and crashworthiness. FORMER Subaru owner. If you're stuck with 91 octane, you end up taking the bigger turbo approach, and if you didn't get the Sti to begin with, the transmission will grenade. SO, if I was going to own another Subaru product, it would only be one that someone else dumped their entire 401k into and is now forced to sale because of a divorce. And, it would have to be much better than even the one featured in this video. I don't miss the understeer and being pulled over once a month for "looking" like I was going fast.

    • @Xmvw2X
      @Xmvw2X 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Theogrn The RX8 is a very unappreciated car. For people looking at the S2000, FRS/BRZ, or even a Miata, the RX8 really needs to be on the list. It is a softer GT car though, rides comfy, is quiet, and has body roll. The S2000 and FRS/BRZ are more hard core, the S2000 more so. However, back to back to back, trade offs are abound. The S2000 is less practical and a tighter fit. It's noisier and always ON. It is engaging and a lot of fun. The FRS/BRZ is more practical with cargo room, and the cabin feels gargantuan compared to the others. The FRS/BRZ is the middle one. It's also lower on power, but the gearing is good. The RX8 is a more form fitting cabin, but you still fit. Even full size adults fit in the back seats. The car actually seats 4 real adult people. There's still good cargo space. The RX8 also has the best engine in the bunch, although it's neutered by the gearbox, well more specifically the final drive. It feels like it was pulled directly from the Miata with a 6500 redline and tossed in the RX8 with a 9500 redline...with no gearing change. You can high 65mph in 2nd gear. It's a high rpm, low torque engine tied to a gearbox that doesn't fit it. At any point, you can be in one of any three or four gears, and it doesn't matter. You can sit in 3rd or 6th cruising 70mph down the highway. The gears don't feel meaningful, and the tall gearing hides the engines prowess.
      Now the fun part. The RX8 engine is better that the S2000. Power, torque, and even rpm are nearly the same. They feel nearly the same driven back to back. However, the Renesis engine is smoother, more rev happy and faster dynamical, and has better mid-range torque.
      The RX8 chassis and suspension setup is pretty sweet too, but that should be of no surprise given its basically a long, four door 3rd gen Miata...except better with improved suspension, balance and stability, and 100 more HP to play with.

      Xmvw2X haha and its a rotary! If you can find a well maintained one they are probably an extremely charming car but most are unfortunately owned by a lazy bunch! I had an frs for 3 years and i enjoyed the car so much! I ended trading it in for a more practical car but i plan on buying a second car here soon and or getting just another fun daily to play with. Rx8’s and fc’s are on my list for a second car

    I had a 2002 bug eye WRX wagon. I miss the simplicity and fun of that car. In rain or snow it was a blast. With the roof rack loaded with bikes and kayaks, flying at speed on dirt roads or highway especially in bad weather it was a remarkable ride that sets a grin on my face remembering road trips across the country. It suffered a hailstone beating and came out a golf ball. Insurance reskinned the vehicle like new but the body shop replaced the lettering as RXM. I had a unique one and only model.

    DCCD doesn't control where the power goes, it controls how locked the center differential is

    • @Xmvw2X
      @Xmvw2X 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      zed4me True. It doesn't control bias at all. It's only lock profile. I believe in most situations, one step below full lock is the best setting. Full lock is good for poor road conditions just for consistent, even stability regardless of throttle. I use full lock driving through a blizzard or when I'm rallycrossing. One step below just gives you a little better off throttle turn in as full lock does create a small amount of corner entry undetsteer due to the center diff interfering with the front end during turning from uneven tire speeds.
      Most other diff settings are mostly worthless. You can tune handling balance a little, but mostly you're just adding more handling balance variability on throttle which makes the car less predictable and harder to drive.
      Also it's important to note that the effects of the DCCD are only noticed when you have tire slip. With sticky tires on asphalt, the DCCD does almost nothing. However, it becomes wildly varying once you take the car in dirt/snow/mud. Here the effects of the DCCD makes large changes, both in how the power is put down and how that power delivery affects handling balance.
      For me 99% of the time is one step under full lock. The other 1%is when I absolutely want peak stability, predictability, and consistency in power delivery and am willing to add undetsteer to the handling.

    Why can't manufacturers make simple cars? Like just a bare bones car. For instance the type R why can't they just strip down everything and leave the important part like the drivetrain suspension etc. I think it is that people are getting soft compare to the 90s. The enthusiasm has been decayed to a point that spec matters a lot more than what driving really is.

      The marketing teams took over and millennials just want to be carted around while staring at their phones, locked in fantasy land. Marketing has decided: "Well, we can put a bully grill on a Carolla, and as long as it LOOKS The part, somehow the younger crowds will want to buy it"?! I agree with you, basically it's a cultural crises when you have every guy out there with a "ME TOO" Beard but they cannot change a car tire or even have a clue on how a clutch based system works. Zero enthusiasm for involvement in the driving process. So it's laziness all around. Try driving a 370z in Portland Oregon, EVERYTHING here is a "ME TOO" Suv/Cuv, yet, I guarantee you my car has seen more gravel roads and strategically hauled more crap. We've just turned into a "checklist" society anymore...just look at when you go on vacation, people cannot just stand there and take things in for greater than .00002 seconds, and then they are off to the next "checklist" destination, YET, they ARE bored the entire way, which is why they compliment so many people that have a vehicle that isn't just another metoo mobile. Just my theory... Hopefully one day Marketing will nolonger be recognized as a viable major, and corporations knock it off with trying to take the volume approach, and I'm with you: Why can't we get a Honda CTR without all the look at me garbage????

      There isn't a business case for it. A "simplified" car that still meets current safety and fuel efficiency regulations would cost about the same as modern cars. Once you have the tech, the cost to integrate it into all your models is minimal.

    • @TassieLorenzo
      @TassieLorenzo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      You should blame Volkswagen, they are the ones who set the standard that a sporty car should be also be luxurious. :) Look at how well the barebones Lancer Evolution isn't selling compared to the Golf R. Can't blame Ford and Honda for simply matching VW by loading their sporty trim up with gadgets and some level of refinement.
