  • Join me as I explore and photograph the most North Easterly edge of Mainland Britain. In this video I go to a location I've wanted to go to for years and discover some unexpected wildlife along the way!
    Filmed at John O'Groats (Scotland).

    Hi Kim. Thoroughly enjoyed your latest video (as well as your others) and I especially liked your "reveal" of your final destination. Literally made me blurt out loud "WOW!"
    Nice that you got to see seals up close and personal. Always a treat to see wildlife in their natural habitat as opposed to zoos, wildlife parks which are essentially bigger zoos really.
    I can relate to that feeling having seen Swans and a Bob Cat and Moose in the wild. Not animals that are seen very often in my area. They're there but just very elusive.
    Stunning coast line there and I hope you got many great images of those wonderful Sea Stacks.

    As someone else commented, your enthusiasm is "infectious." I also use the BeFree tripod on my backpacking trips, and I agree that it has stability limitations. I have recently ordered Manfrotto's "version 2" ball head for this tripod that has a separate pano knob, some I'm looking forward to experimenting. Thanks for another great vlog!

    Excellent vlog again Kim.👍
    Just a couple of tips that may help you with camera shake. Remove your camera strap as it catches the wind and you don’t need it when the camera is mounted in your tripod. Don’t use the tripods centre column as they are inherently unstable anyway and finally spread the tripod legs the next width wide. This increases the footprint and really helps alleviate camera shake.
    Take care. 🍀👌

    Great video Kim. It's getting better all the time. I noticed you had the center column raised. By extending the center column you are creating the characteristics of a mono pod. I would have lowered it but also lowered the tripod as much as you can and still have the composition you where looking for and if needed add your back pack as weight.

      Clemens Jellema Hi Clemens, as mentioned below, I was as close to the edge of the cliff as I could go without putting myself in danger and as I result, raising the column was the only way I could get the whole stack in the frame. I may need to include more detail behind my thought process in future videos ☺ thanks for the advice though - much appreciated

    How can anyone give your video's a thumbs down, they must jealous!! Love the energy and enthusiasm you exude, love your images as well, I'm sure it won't be long before you hit that magic 10k subscribers. Shame a bout the camera shake, does your tripod not have a hook on the centre coloum to hang your backpack on to make it more sturdy. Awesome video as usual!!

  • @allandavies1187
    @allandavies1187 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello Kim, could I suggest that you carry and use a bungee cord, drape it around the head of your tripod then attach your backpack which will stretch the cord and it will ly taught on the ground. Be careful to ensure that it does not swing about and create even more movement. By doing this your tripod will become more stable. The other alternative is a large corkscrew device which goes into the ground, normally used by caravanners to tether their dogs outside. Once again attach the bungee cord to this. You can even increase better stability if you attach 3 x 6" stainless steel spikes which are terrific. Best regards, Allan Davies.

    So glad you appreciate the North of Scotland (up here it is not really Britain anymore). I live in Caithness, born in Orkney, spent 20 years in Yorkshire and this is the best place! Love your videos and always look forward to them! I find that a carrier bag, filled with a few stones hung from your tripod can do wonders for stability! Hope you enjoy the rest of your stay here. I really get your comment about seeing the weather front approaching, the wind is the biggest problem for photography here (and rain) you have to make multiple trips to get the best! I suggest Dunnet Head for views of Orkney and great panoramas!! Keep up the good work!

    Another great video Kim. Such an amazing location to shoot. For a long exposure on a tripod that is not very stead, you can use the weight of your camera bag suspended underneath the tripod. I carry an extra strap that attaches to the bottom of the middle of the tripod to give it extra weight.

    Great vid Kim. Tripod dilemma, agree with comment about centre column not being used, I always try to avoid it. Keeping tripod low and adding weight both help a lot, though when the wind picks up those tips only get you so far. I have one travel tripod that saves the back on a long hike when not windy, the other one is very sturdy but requires more thought about what goes in the bag. That said, I prefer the heavy one as its much taller and just so sturdy for long exposures.
    Look forward to your next vlog.

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cam-Shy Watson I never normally use the middle column but here I had to in order to get the full stack in the image. I went as close to the edge of the cliff as I could safely without falling off 😂 sometimes the vlogs don't show this. Maybe something I can explain and show better in the future. Thanks for the tips though! Appreciate it ☺

    • @wigglerise
      @wigglerise 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had a feeling you needed the height, being close to the edge there would have put the ground in the way had you been low no doubt. Hey, you got your shot and lovely it is too, not only that but you got out to a wonderful location and enjoyed amazing views. What more can you ask for.

    "A good tripod is heavy. A better tripod is heavier. The best tripod is the one you actually use." Any tripod can be made better by adding weight, like hanging a backpack from it. Also, in situations like this it is often possible to leave the legs short and be more stable as a result.

    Kim, just found your channel so forgive me if you've been asked before, but I am curious about shooting and wearing glasses. I too wear them. Do you shoot with them on? Do you find them in your way? Do you need to view through them? And do you make any adjustments and if so what? Thanks and I hope someday I will make it to Scotland. Have always wanted to go.

    • @kimgrantphotography
      @kimgrantphotography  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      christen mcclure Hi Christen! My glasses situation is a bit unusual as I don't technically need them but they make things slightly sharper (astigmatism). I often wear them when shooting particularly if I've driven to a location. I often forget I've got them on until I try and look through the view finder! I don't think it matters of you shoot with them on or not. For me it makes no difference but if you have bad eyesight without yours then I'd say it's probably best to wear them to enhance the experience. I personally never find that they get in the way but I think everyone will be different ☺

    • @henkpeter1755
      @henkpeter1755 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      christen mcclure I wear glasses and I need them to see sharp. I have not made diopter adjustments to my cameras but one camera has difficulty to switch to the EVF (Electronic Viewfinder) when I wear my everyday glasses. Not when I wear my sports glasses. All my other mirrorless cameras give no problems with both pairs of glasses.
