Kenya: Lower House Passes Impeachment Motion Against Deputy President, Goes to Senate | Firstpost Africa
Kenya for the very first time could see a deputy president getting impeached. The Kenyan senate, which is the upper house of the parliament has begun the proceedings on the impeachment motion against the deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. Fast-tracking the process, the matter has been forwarded to the Senate just a day after Kenya's National Assembly, the lower house, in a historic move overwhelmingly voted in favour of the impeachment motion. The motion accuses the deputy president of 11 charges including insubordination, undermining the government, practising ethnically divisive politics and also being involved in the recent anti-government protests which turned out to be a major challenge for the William Ruto administration. Gachaguahas denied any wrongdoing and said he would not back down and would fight to the end. While Ruto has not yet commented publicly on the impeachment proceedings it is believed the impeachment bid is a culmination of the fallout with his deputy. Hello. I keenly watch your news on all Firstpost platforms. I have watched your post on Kenya's impeachment of her Deputy President. Kindly note that in Kenya, parliament is not referred to in terms of lower and upper house model. Its the National parliament and the Senate. The National parliament is what you seem to refer to as lower house. That is how our constitution classify them.
