12:54 you’re correct. Cheryl is 1/5 of the UK’s biggest girl group Girls Aloud who have featured on the list a few times. This was her first solo single which went straight to #1

Cheryl was in Girls Aloud. She also has a son with Liam Payne, the One Direction member that died last year,. They met when she was a judge on X Factor.

The Westlife version of Uptown Girl is a cover. Billy Joel is the original singer, he is American.

We dont love X factor songs in the UK, but they'd get released for the Christmas chat and all the old dears buy it and the mums buy it for their kids! One year we rebelled against xfactor hogging the #1 Christmas slot for years on end, so we all united in protest and made Rage Against the Machine "Killing in the Name Of" #1 regardless of whether we liked it or not, just to piss off Simon Cowell and Sony Music. It worked‼️‼️♥️🇬🇧😉

Shayne Ward 'That's My Goal' was an X Factor winning single, but you won't know it as, unlike the others on the list, it was actually an original song!
The top 2 songs on this list from Gareth Gates and Will Young are from the runner up and winner of the first series of Pop Idol respectively, the show which was the predecessor to X Factor and which existed before American Idol came along. Will's song is actually a cover of a Westlife album track from an album that had only been released 3 months before! That first series was massive, nearly everyone expected Gareth to win (including me, I was obsessed to the point of making a scrapbook on him; hey I was a teenager!), so it was a shock when Will won. I was annoyed at the time, but actually Iove them both now, and Will is really good live.
Also, our charts at the time were purely sales-based, no airplay counted (though obviously if a song was getting good airplay, it contributed to people then going out and buying a song). We had a separate download chart from 2004 (as a Westlife fan, I always remember them getting the first No.1 on that), but it wasn't until 2007 that the official UK charts were made up of a combination of both physical and download sales.
My music knowledge, especially of the UK charts in the late 90s to mid 00s, knows no bounds haha!

Also you’ll see a lot of X Factor songs which landed on the number one spot because they always released it as a cover version at Christmas to coincide with them winning, they also released a cover version with all of the finalists as a charity single which more or less went to number one. Leona Lewis for example released A Moment Like This as her winner song and then came back with her actual lead single which was Bleeding Love.

I dont think these are based off record sales, just songs that got to number 1 and stayed in the charts!
