  • Deserts and dunes seem to go hand in hand in most people's minds. Death Valley has several areas and today we visit and wander around the most visited field, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

    Simply labeled as "Sand Dunes", the Mesquite Flat Dunes are the most iconic in Death Valley National Park. They are easily accessible by driving along Highway 190 and turning off into the parking lot. Parking is available for both passenger cars and larger vehicles such as RVs.
    From the parking lot, visitors can simply wander out into the sand and explore the dunes as there is no official trail. Walking further away from the parking lot, footsteps become less frequent and you can feel like you are out by yourself. Solitude can be found in abundance.
    Many chose to walk along the ridges of the dunes which is definitely is the easier route. Trying to climb up the sides of the dunes is definitely a work out so bring some good shoes that keep sand out if that is a concern.
    Sunrise and sunset are popular here as the lighting lends to striking colors and amazing photographs. This place is just made for photographing and it is hard to come back without amazing shots.

      Thanks so much!! Of all the video footage Glenn came back with, this one was my fave to edit. Choosing the music was fun. 😊 And yeah... I'm impressed with his climbing that dune. I'd have just been content with a small one and sliding down it. 😂

    Beautiful dune and hike through the area. I have hiked in the Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado and it was a fun place to explore. We had found crystallized rocks that were created from lightning sticks hitting the sand. A few days earlier a massive thunderstorm was in the area and the park host had told us what to look for. Thanks for sharing more of the Death Valley area. It's beautiful out there.

    Cool! Hiking dunes is always so tough. It takes a lot more effort than regular hiking and if you try to climb a dune it seems to take forever to get to the top!!

      Haha! Sadly we don't own one. Isn't really something one uses too often out here in the desert. 😅

    All I want to know is, can you find your way back? Really an amazing place with an enchanting beauty.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, it's not hard to find one's way back. It's roughly a mile from the parking lot to the highest dune and the reflection from the cars makes it pretty easy to know where to go. ☺️
