- In episode 95, we finally tour a Bayliner 4788 after numerous people reached out to us advising we needed to check one out. This was an impromptu tour and we didn't have our camera equipment with us. This gave us an idea of how this motor yacht is laid out and if it would work for a liveaboard boat.

I am the owner and a "stay aboard" on my 2001 Bayliner 4788. Everything you said about the 4788 is 100% true and correct. Every boat is a compromise. As you know you have only so much cubic space and have to divide it up into all the different living areas.
For me, the 4788 is a almost perfect liveaboard platform, because it provides the compromises that I want. For you with your "needs" I am thinking that a larger than your 4087 aft cabin boat might work. I do not think you will find everything you want in a 50' pilothouse style boat. Go to 55' and you will probably be able to meet those needs, or go larger than your 4087 in a aft cabin design since any aft cabin has more interior volume than the same length boat in a pilothouse design.

1999-2006 carver 450 voyager has two queen staterooms 2 full baths. Separate washer and dryer in master. Raised pilothouse with 360 visibility,doubles as entertaining area. Bridge also has great visibility and entertainment areas. Prop pockets create a 3’7” draft. Swim platform and door for easy entry. Huge storage under the galley, have to install door to right of dryer to access the secret area. Engine room is in cockpit, easy to work on engines. 450 hp Cummins are all mechanical until 2003 or 2004. Engines easy to maintain. Parts very economical for Cummins engines

These changed exclusively to the 460 somewhere in the middle of that date range (2002 I think) which eliminated the lower helm which adds the third stateroom and makes the boat very livable. The 450/460 is a very stunning boat and great for entertaining. Engine room access through the cockpit sole is a huge bonus. They were just out of our price range and we had to give up the search after a year. We eventually found what we wanted in a Silverton 453. While these too were offered with a lower pilothouse it was very rare. We went with a fully glassed flybridge model to extend our cruising season. Heat and air on the back deck and helm is great. My only complaint is the primary dinette is a bit tight. Both owner and VIP staterooms are walk around queen which is nice. The bunks in the front are pretty much 5’6” or less so basically only For kids.
I was also going to suggest one of the models from the Carver Voyager series such as the 450 or 530. I noticed a 450 listed in Bremerton, Wa. Best of luck!

Yeah the extra step up in fit and finishes on the Carvers are so worth it for almost the same cost. Especially for living with them everyday. Carver 504 has a walk around. But you do get a lot of boat for the money with an old Bayliner.
I've been looking for a live aboard in the Tacoma/Seattle area too and youtube randomly fed me your video and as I was watching it I was like geee that boat looks familiar. Then I looked and saw that this was posted 8 hours ago and realized that is the one I've been looking at on yacht world too. Small world lol but I am now subscribed! You made a lot of great points about needs for a live aboard that the 4788 doesn't have. Look forward to more videos! The Bayliner 5788 has a lot of the key features you thought were missing except more exterior space. It has it own dinette and walk around master bed. Its also double the price too. And the thing that I don't like about getting into the full beam masters of that layout is there is no 2nd means of egress like a large enough hatch to escape if your primary entrance is blocked by fire. Some people have mentioned the voyagers which depending on layout, which are nice, have the full beam masters too with no 2 means of egress. If its just a weekend boat your only staying in the master occasionally but if its a live aboard your spending a lot more time in the master and thats when I start to think about things like the possibility of a fire ever happening.

My wife and I were looking for a 4788 or Meriden 490 ten years ago then we stumbled on the
Navigator 4800 two cabin and fell in love. It ticked all our boxes. Our list sounded just like yours!
Last year with changing priorities, read grand kids plus mom and dad. We upgraded to a three
Cabin layout. Which Navigator does have in the 4800. But upped it again and now ply the waters on
Our 55 Offshore, it was not a straight across switch however.

Check out the Nordhaven 55 it has a generous cockpit,of course you can always go up in size ,that’s where the cockpit grows.

I don’t know about 2022 Bayliner‘s, But 25 years ago they were known to be made very cheap and people told me they were very light and would blow around and twist. For an example I looked at the Bayliner for 50,000 years ago NAC Ray for 50,000. The sea ray was much smaller inside and the Bayliner was very spacious, they told me that’s because the Bayliner is not supported like the sea ray. Deceive Ray had been in the center and that’s why the Bayliner’s with twist
Interestingly enough I (Ally) work for a dealership that sells both. Bayliner has purposely produced a fantastic product that is affordable and this is especially true with the interior. Instead of leather, they use vinyl, etc. The hulls are designed slightly different too. Thanks for popping in!

Great points. We aim to homeschool on our boat so dinette/table space indoor/outdoor is also on our list (but cocktails sound good too!). We also like the idea of the aft stateroom with walk-around berth. The 3rd stateroom being in the master stateroom is really the biggest deal breaker for us on this model though (even without the doors removed and the curtain installed). Good luck in your search!

The 4788 certainly has the room for a liveaboard. Carefully survey the boat as they do tend to leak around fittings and windows. If you haven't done so yet, you might want to look at a 44 Tollycraft CPMY. It's an example of a well built boat. Designed by Ed Monk Jr, along with Ocean Alexanders, the hull design works well for PNW waters. Construction is top notch with glassed hull-deck joints, fully framed windows, solid glass hull, and foam cored decks and stringers. You'll spend less $$'s and frustration in the long run owning a well built boat. Talk to Doug at Pacific Fiberglass for his opinion on boat construction. He's seen it all.

We have a Carver 350 Mariner, nice weekend, short trip boat. We have dogs so the wide side decks and steps to flybridge make it great dogs and us. But if we move aboard, it would not be the 350. I have my eye on 3 boats. Love the Krogen Express 52, but out of my price range (unless I win the lotto). Always have been a fan of Meridian 490 (Bayliner 4788). We chartered one in the San Juan's for a week, had six on board with comfort to spare. But I do understand the bed issue you bring up on 4788. I also have become to like the looks and price point of the Sea Ray 390 Motoryacht. Master has a true walk around bed aft master, with separate head from shower. It has a VIP cabin in bow area with its own head. Nice galley with storage and Salon is not bad, most of washer/dryer and central vac. This 390 is also $100k cheaper than a 490. Of course it does not have a dinette just like 490/4788. Even the Krogen does not have a dinette. But the Krogen has engine room you can stand in! Have fun shopping! As they say boats are always a trade off!

On your tour, you describe the forward berth as a V berth. It is not. That is called an island berth. A v berth is actually in the shape of a "V"

Greetings from the Tri-cities! My wife and I really enjoy your videos. Have you guys checked out/considered a Carver 570 Voyager? We have had a 35' Bayliner for a couple of years which is a great boat, but we wanted something with (a lot) more room and we decided on the Carver 570.

I do enjoy watching since now I am torn between powerboat and sailboats. Two different approaches and lifestyles. I like to go to law school in Seattle and have a live-aboard while going to school. During semester breaks I would like to travel along the coast to explore. The main concern is fuel. How do I get a real handle on that expense versus sailing? Some videos point out the expense of maintaining the proper and safe rigging/sails. Any thoughts how to approach this question? Thanks.
Great question. We're not sailors and that's part of the reason. There are so many parts with rigging and sails, plus we don't want to boat at an angle. What a great plan you have!
@@BoatingJourney Being up in the NW how far up north can you travel with a motor-yacht or how far out from the coast do people safely go? If you want to travel by boat over the weekend what seems to be a reasonable distance/radius from your home-port?
You also mentioned that 'the boat' came with a 'live-aboard' slip. What is the significance of that statement. Do you get a slip before you buy a boat?
@@michellekccd56 great questions! Well, before covid restricted the borders, many folks travel up the coast and explore BC and Alaska for long vacations. For a weekend, from Seattle (depending on your cruising speed) you can visit the south and west sound easily. To get to the San Juan Islands, takes about 4-6 hours depending on your speed. Plus we have a lot of logs, so we can't necessarily cruise at 21 knots. The significance of the liveaboard slip is we want to live on the boat. However, marinas have stopped allowing liveaboard boats from moving in. However, if a boat for sale happens to come with a liveaboard slip, then we're set. Thanks for watching!!
@@BoatingJourney Your statement that marinas are restricting 'live-aboards' kind of puts a dampener on my idea to live on a boat and go to school instead of renting an apartment. How else can you live full-time on a boat if the marina does not want you?
@@michellekccd56 Exactly!! that's the issue. Most marinas will only allow you to sleep on board 9 nights out of the month.

Well, for starters it's out of our price range. Beautiful boats and very sea worthy. We also want two engines and to have the ability to cruise faster if we wanted to (i.e. 13 to 16knots). Great question!!
So why didn't you just keep your old phone cuz it doesn't seem like anything's for you maybe the people you sold your boats who will sell it back to you
Hi Robert, not sure what you are asking? We sold our Bayliner 4087, so we could buy a liveaboard boat. We didn't sell our phone.

No worries ;) Yeah, we shared a video last summer about why we sold it. Since marinas were locked down and we couldn't really go anywhere last year, we decided to sell it and save money to put towards our liveaboard boat ;)
