    Application storage is your problem. The application games and data where it syncs automatically in the background and saves it for later so when you delete apps and redownloading apps again that data is saved to iCloud in a separate patrician on your account so that’s probably where your 6gb is being used at even though you have iCloud files turned off.

    • @anetizen6404
      @anetizen6404 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      so does that mean if Drew's or his wife's iphones got lost those app data would be lost too, if they require Apple ID to store on the cloud? A friend of mine lost his game process of _6 months_ for this shit

    • @ianvanessen2166
      @ianvanessen2166 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anetizen6404 retro games may not require an account. if you delete the app, the data is linked to the device and will be lost. Most games these days require some sort of registration (email/face book/iTunes/etc.) and these are safe to delete as long as you remember your login credentials.
      If a game has 6 months of content and no account registration then it is a fatal flaw and I would never put that much time in a game that had no security.

    I have always recorded in 1080p 60fps instead of 4K. Which saves me a lot of space. 4K on such a small iPhone camera is a joke anyway. You can’t see the difference, and it takes up 4times the space. Yes it’s 4K, but it’s not only pixels that matters.

    Fair enough. But as a family of 4 we all religiously use Apple Music, Apple TV+ and have required iCloud storage for work and school purposes for a few years now. Since Apple One Premier works out to just over $10 person, it genuinely is a good deal as we can share everything between our iCloud Family devices including the 2TB for backup up photos and all of our devices. It's genuinely so much more convenient than constantly backing stuff up to hard drives (our important stuff is still backed up to physical drives).

    Essentially what your realizing from this whole experience is that the ecosystem is only pretty when you give apple a certain amount of money. It's why I love how android deals with photos and files- when you plug your phone into a laptop, everything just shows up in folders that you can read and write from, it's literally just copy and paste in either direction

    • @TailosiveTech
      @TailosiveTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Not at all. iMessage, airdrop, universal control, airplay, and more all still work without paying a penny per month. Ecosystem is still fantastic without iCloud

    • @anshumanranjan2933
      @anshumanranjan2933 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TailosiveTech I'm not discounting those advantages, I'm saying that as you add more apple devices, the ecosystem becomes exponentially better. So if you choose to buy only 1 or 2 apple devices, then you will only get a fraction of the ecosystem benefits and the remainder of your "outside" devices will be a hassle to work with ( you can't backup iPhone to NAS without macbook, you can't cast your phone screen to chromecast, you can't use NFC to send files, etc)
      In this scenario you had the benefit of having an old iMac that you can use as a backup machine, but this solution wouldn't work for someone who only has an iPhone and no apple laptop (yes, you can backup to windows, but the experience is devastatingly painful, it makes you want to pull your hair out)
      Tl:dr If you choose to stick with just an iPhone (Cuz you are poor or not a techy guy) then iCloud is the only option that isn't a major headache

    • @hilal_younus
      @hilal_younus 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really, it’s hard to detach from a part of the apple ecosystem, doesn’t mean it’s important to pay extra money.
      For example, iPhone and Mac, can have airdrop, universal clipboard etc. without iCloud, however if you want, iCloud will help do more like syncing iMessage, pages, keynote documents etc.

    This is why I never wanted to use iCloud photos. Because the downgrade process or downloading your photos/videos to move them elsewhere is complicated, and not to mention super slow with internet I have currently.
    I use iCloud messages, and when my storage is getting full, I go find which conversations are taking the most space, go to it, get to the “all photos” section and delete those, so I can keep the messages. My storage was at around 3.2 GB, I deleted some stuff, waited a few days (needs to “upload” the new messages overnight), and now it’s 2.4, and could probably go lower. It’s been nice being able to search for an old message without worrying if it’s older than 30 days (the auto delete thing, which is easier but you lose messages and attachments)
    My number one feature request for iOS is more options for auto deleting old messages. Like how there’s a separate option for the audio messages, make an option for photos/videos, and even better, those could be separated. And make more time in between 1 year and 30 days, choose an amount of months and maybe longer than a year for those who want it. But at least the “auto delete photos/videos older than 30 days” or whatever time frame would help so much
    I use the photo steam so I can get photos that I take on my iPhone on my iPad, and it doesn’t take any iCloud storage. I don’t really need to access videos. I always think of the Apple keynotes where they showed how you take a picture with your iPhone, and using iCloud photos, it’ll show up right away on your iPad or something so you can put it in your document. But photo stream works basically the same way, although I don’t know how fast it is in comparison

  • @PatricioBenavente

    Tip: Create a second photo library by holding the option key while open Photos App on a mac. Set under preferences NOT to sync to iCloud. Import your photos from iPhone. Quit and relaunch the Photos App while holding the option key. Choose the default library (that’s still sync with iCloud) Now you can delete photos from iCloud
    Bonus Tip: when storing things locally use Time Machine for backups.

    Drew, be careful with your suggestion on deleting photos from apple photos after downloading it all in full resolution. If you delete a Photo on your icloud connected iphone apple photos app then it WILL delete on your fully downloaded Mac icloud apple photos library, if that one is also still connected to your icloud library!!! The only way you can get it to not delete, is you need to have icloud photos library switched off after you downloaded all your photos in full resolution on your mac. I hope that helps people. I have dealt with icloud photos library for a decade now and im on apple support phone hotline many times, because some things are just not working as intended. Thanks for the video though!

I have called Apple and they can’t tell me why they are corrupted and it has been sent on to the higher up people and still for these photos the only thing that is left is the low-res preview when I pay Apple for the full res quality to be stored. I always move my photo's and video's from my iPhone immediately to my Mac and to my backups so i mostly use my iCloud storage for temporary media use and i use it for documents like pages so that i can move those between my Mac Pro, iPhone and Macbook Air. It's so easy and it works. It's also a nice UI and simple to understand. Though, the calendar is a bit weirder to understand to be honest. But i need to watch someone on TH-cam that has some good knowledge about this. So when i find the time, i'm going to look this up. But for now, i am pretty happy.

    I would question your presumption that if you store full size photos on Mac, they will not go away when deleted on iPhone. This is not how photos sync works. Photos did not disappear on mac most likely because there were still lots of to sync in a queue or something. I had full res photos stored on my Mac for a long time and it did delete them when I deleted them on iPhone. Good you did a library backup anyway.

    I suppose Apple will one day charge for all options including the 5GB perhaps up it to 20GB for 49p then year later price increases for all 20GB becomes 79p that it once used to be, this is how it used to be one time 5GB free 20GB 79p so I recon this is how Apple will get rid of the free 5GB option

    Drew you should really look into getting a Synology NAS specially for Synology Photos. This method makes sure you keep all your data. It is a little investment at first but is really worth it. My wife had 4 TB of family photos (photos and videos of her as a baby until now as an adult) and is definitely worth it. Another pro is that the data stays your data, these free cloud providers give you more storage but not because they’re nice, remember they’re like google so they sell your data

    Personally I don't understand your reasoning... after 30 years in IT, 40 using computers the idea of accessible storage from anywhere and any device has always been a dream. It's actually one of the reasons I moved into the Apple ecosystem. Many companies are moving any application that can be cloud based off local storage, this is slowly moving to consumers as well yet you did the opposite for $10 a month? I think the iCloud data is pretty cheap, I could easily do without one of my streaming services for the convenience alone.

    • @anetizen6404
      @anetizen6404 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's also infuriating that the Photos app on the Mac doesn't let you keep photos just locally if you have iCloud photos turned on. I prefer to use iCloud Photos so I don't lose my photos in case my phone gets broken or lost/stolen, so it would be nice if I could have the experience of using the Photos app to view and browse my photos without having to sync it to iCloud. I end up having no way to conveniently browse my DSLR camera photos other than just looking at it using Finder. The iPhoto days were surely better than this in regards to offline photo browsing 🙄. Yes, I know that third party apps/software exists, but Apple practically only letting us use iCloud photos for the Photos app is so unfair for the customers.

    Eh icloud is kind of useless anyway as a main backup. I do manual full backups on iTunes and it's flawless no matter than the non ios users say.
    I have zero pictures or emails saved in my icloud but i do allow my calendar, notes, and contacts to always be backed up since those are too important which take up like no space since the space hogging is from photos and pictures, messages, and emails to some extent.
    And i actually use iCloud drive as like my flashdrive. 5gb is fine for the normal person as long as they do manual backups on a mac or pc at least monthly which doesn't take long. The first initial backup file will take as much as few hours if it's massive but after that it's pretty quick.
