Hello everyone, Update: For Blender 4.2+ and new. You can install from within blender extensions menu or download from here: extensions.blender.org/add-ons/polyquilt-fork/ I have added some notes related to this tutorial. Thanks for viewing! - Disable Symmetry during cuts or knife. (other option is mirror modifier. Use On Cage to see both sides) - Right click or escape to exit cut tool. - For fixing symmetry Select faces (A) then goto Mesh Menu -> Symmetrize Tool (+X -X) - Save regularly during Retopology. - Assign shortcuts or add tools to quick favorites. - If addon enable error shows, restart blender then try to enable addon. - Tested on Blender 3.6, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 (use addon latest version)
Unfortunately, I had a problem with the add-on working. In the toolbar on the left, there is a button to activate it, but after clicking on it, I can't perform any actions other than moving the geometry.
I'm so glad your video came up on my feed, I've been looking for an equivalent way to repotogize like Maya's quad draw in Blender for a long time. Thank you Farrukh!
the only one that works on 4.2! Not even the paid ones do. I have a problem with addons for blender since I have it on steam and it really creates me some problems in that regard, but this tool saved me!
@@giga_charge It is difficult to update all versions. Blender releases new updates fast which breaks many add-ons. Maybe in future update this can be fixed. Current support is 3.6, 4.0, 4.1.0.
Damn this looks really useful! I tried the bsurfaces add on but I don’t quite like how it’s set up. This feels like the native Maya kind of retopology that I used to do before using 3dcoat to do my retopo.
Thank you! Yes, I have seen cozyblanket, I have not tried it but it looks really good and more advanced in some ways. Maybe if it comes to desktop windows then can be solid toolset to have.
Thank you! Modifier list addon for list view of modifiers (available on blender extensions website free) and Modifier tools (builtin) adds toggle buttons on top of stack.
Hi! Thank you for the tutorial! I have enjoyed using this tool, but one minor frustration. If I am trying to move a vert or extrude an edge and I am a little off were I click it will drop a vert and try to create a Face that I then have to undo. Is there a way I missed to just be in the move mode or the extrude mode?
Hi, Thank you! For moving vertex or edge, simply hover over it it will turn yellow and you can drag to move it. To extrude only you can assign a shortcut in the setting side panel (n). Make sure snap face is on so the move works correctly. You can press space to create a face preview. Extruding a vertex may not work always. You can switch to transform tool as well. With little practice you will find the right flow.
Unfortunately, I had a problem with the add-on working. In the toolbar on the left, there is a button to activate it, but after clicking on it, I can't perform any actions other than moving the geometry.
Hi, please check if you are using the latest version of the addon. It is available on Extensions page. Try in a new clean blender file. Add a sphere and next add the plane object. Turn on snap face as well. Enable poly quilt button. See if you can add any point. I have tested in blender 4.2. Hopefully it should work.
This worked very well, super easy to use. The only issue I'm encountering is when trying to use the smooth tool I'm getting a Traceback error every time. Any suggestions?
Hi, Thank you for your comments and feedback. You can download the latest blender version (4.1) and check if the addon is latest also from the link. (1.5.2) Restart blender after addon install. Hopefully it should work. I have only tested it till 4.1.
I'm not sure why, but any face extruded using the polyquilt tool doesnt snap to my mesh? I have the snap to face setting turned on and a similar tool like polybuild works how it should, but polybuild always extrudes parallel to my screen view
Hi, check in a new file with only one base object. Then add a plane and in the edit mode, delete all the faces in it. With face snap on, Enable polyquilt and click on surface to add points for retopology. These should be part of the plane. So there should be two objects. I have tested in 4.1. See if the you have latest blender version and addon also. Hopefully it will work.
Hey, this mostly works pretty well, but there's one glaring flaw I'm hitting. When I try to move verts or edges, they snap and pop erratically. It's impossible to precisely place a vert where I need it to go. When I hold a vert and move it with the mouse rapidly jumps around into 20 different places none of them ever settling on where my cursor is. Do you know if there are any settings I can adjust to resolve this?
Hi, Thank you for your comment. Check if the snap settings are set to face not any other. Turn off symmetry as well. Most likely some snap issue is causing this. Keep one active model in the viewport only and see if it works.
Once i add a shrinkrwap modifier works for wrap into an object, but when i move an edge, takes the original surface and not the one that is wrapped. Hard to explain.
Hi, I think you can try to disable shrinkwrap during using PolyQuilt. There is on cage setting in the modifier also, see if it works or not. I am not sure if this is the issue. Check if snapping with face option is on as well.
Hi, no shrinkwrap needed. It will auto snap to base geometry. But you can add if you need to use a subdivision modifier alongside, then it will make everything clean and smooth.
F2 is good as well and fast. F2 is not context sensitive meaning you have to click to vertex etc, here you can just hover to adjust. Smoothing in edit mode, plenty of other tools. In the end more options are always good to have!
Hi, if you need to retopologize clothes or complex objects then check Quad Remesher (Paid Addon). It is one of the best addon in creating fast clean auto retopology in Blender. Use with manual retopo methods to get the right results.
Something is definitely buggy with the quadpatch tool. It appears to draw only in the objects center even if you switch pivot to 3d cursor. Cant seem to get the lines to draw anywhere directly on mesh surface. My expectation is that it would work similarly to BMesh. If anyone has any tips on how to properly use the quad patch tool (not poly quilt tool) please post reply. Using v1.5.2
Hi, kindly check in a new file with only one object. Next add a plane, delete all the points. Turn on snap with face, enable quad patch. Draw a line over the object (only visible after two points). If you see the line with points then it is working. Draw the next line to bridge them. This should be part of the plane object. The quadpatch tool is not complete and it has some issues.
@@Farrukh3D appreciate your feed back. I tested in a new project and I do see the lines now however I am still not able to draw on mesh surface. Hopefully this will be fixed soon. Overall I am really enjoying the new tools.
I watched your video 2 times and I could not make my retopology snap to the surface! I did turn on the snap tool and switched it to faces but still not working. does anyone have the same problem and if so can someone please tell me how to fix it?
Hi, you can check if snap option is on in the PolyQuilt settings in the side panel (N). Turn on snap with face then see if the faces snap or not. Try in a new clean empty file and using only one object to snap on. Otherwise add the shrinkwrap modifier and then test. Hopefully, it should work.
Hi, please check if you downloaded add-on version 1.5.2. It will work for Blender 4.0. For new updates please download blender 4.2 and use the latest version from the extensions menu. I have also replied to your email with the links in it. Hopefully it should work.
Give it a try, maybe you might like. It will make the process much simple but there are few bugs here as well. Retopo can be bit stressful sometimes. Best is to taking time and slowly refine it.
