It is 2024, and this band sounds great. I believe they would be a top draw these days. John Cowan is such a great singer. Sam's harmonies always on target. Bela, Pat, and Sam's instrumental work, tops.
Chills is what they give me. I remember when they first broke out in the late 80 's 90 's that was all I would listen to. Thank you, Tim O' brien and Hot Rize ; you made my life better !
As good as it gets right there…. Sam in a tie dye and cowen in a killer green suit and bow tie 😂🥰 love love love it. Great vocals, creative solos, litterally flawless bluegrass preformance.
And Sam Bush, having been lead singer for NGR before hiring John (he told a great story about that which you can find on TH-cam), sings some great harmonies.
I remember the first time I heard John Cowan and then discovered New Grass REvival. My kids and I would listen to their music over and over, each time finding some new lick, tone, nuance, that we missed the previous time we heard the song. years later, we are all still fans of all these guys.
Love these guys....banjo virtuoso! won many awards.... Makes me homesick; and for a place I've only visited, but will be moving there in a week, my beloved mountains....and surrounded by rivers....where I belong. plan never to leave them.... After living here in NY, can't wait to get the hell outta here. Stranger in a strange land....
Each member of this band contribute equally to its magic. My son at 4 years old was sold on bluegrass by them, and now, today teaches strings and drama at a local high school where he introduces bluegrass along with classical, jazz, rock, pop and more. This band has no idea how much we admired them and still do.
These guys rock so much I seen them down in the New Orleans Jazz and heritage festival but even better than that was when I seen them in a little bar restaurant called the Town Crier in a little village called Pawling New York. The receipts for maybe 150 people what an extraordinary show they put on they are so talented. I was in shock when I saw them playing the mandolins and all the different strains instruments. They are truly a great bluegrass band who bought bluegrass into mainstream music
Incredible!!! John's voice superb as always, but every member of this band phenomenal musicians. It took this fine collection of artists to create NGR. I have been a huge fan since the first time I heard them. I just don't get tired of listening. Bluegrass is so cool anyway because all the instruments are showcased. This is Bluegrass with a twist! : )
I wish that my cousin, Sam, and my dad hung out more while my father were still alive. Dad would have enjoyed playing with him immensely. Music is in our blood.
I've loved acoustic music all my life. I've tried to flat pick guitar for the last 15 years. How the heck haven't I heard of Pat Flynn in all that time? Thank goodness for the internet.
Leon is a true legend we meat him back in the day around 83 84 he has played with everybody in the business and he was so Kool and we learned a lot from him and we would run in to him on the road he was like a hillbilly that played rock and roll but he could play and sing anything he was truly a rear bread then in the late 90 s we got to talken and found out we were cousins and we always called a spoke and played to geather the rest of his life? I will always love him thanks Leon??? Cowboy Rob from the band the cocaine cowboys 10/12/24
TierodMcslush come to southern Ohio you would find your happy place. My step dads band covers this song and many more of NGR! But southern Ohio has the best outdoor blue grass festivals!
Believe it or not John Cowan filled in for lead singer of the Dooby Brothers in a concert we went to at Taho back somewhere in the 1990's. He's the best.
All the solos -- even the little mandolin one -- are great, the vocal & harmony outstanding, but what makes it for me are ALL those little things the banjo is doing in and behind the vocal; it's the beat, the drive, the color, and the originality and virtuosity are unparalleled. How great it all is. Does anyone know where and when this was recorded?
I think this might be from when they played in a little tiny restaurant and bar called the Town Crier which held maybe 150 people and it was in Pawling New York I'm not sure because I saw them so many times. It does look like the town crier though
Congratulations! Just different from the original - but made in its special way very professional and excellent! A real pleasure to listen to and I like it very much! Greetings from good ole Bavaria
dpkll5 i totally agree with you these guys need to get back for a reuninon i was raised on them and like was said on here by someone else noone else is rly close to the sound those 4 guys made together i think we all need a "revival" of new grass revival lol
John Cowan's singing (and hair) + Sam Bush's mando pickin and harmony + Pat Flynn's bitchin' solo + Bela Fleck's machine-gun ascending riff = a great freakin' New Grass tune!
John Cowan is my doppleganger. At least the 16-19 yr old me. I had an amazing mullet just like his. I also play bass like him. I didnt discover him until my late 30s tho. He's great!
@immelalex don;t know where I have been on these guys, just great, thanks for utube. other wise you wouldn't know of groups. like these. john cowan is really super.
@immelalex He puts to "OMG" into "OMG"! lol. Followed him for years, Telluride Bluegrass, Lyon Bluegrass, The Aggie in Ft. Collins. I also have a few pictures taken with him. What a down to earth, kind, humble human being he is! I LOVE me some John Cowan!
The solos are all great -- even Sam's little one on the mandolin -- and vocals and harmony are outstanding, the song is wonderful. But the thing that makes it for me is ALL those THINGS the banjo is doing in and behind the music. Inventive, colorful, it is the beat and the drive; THAT's the greatest thing of a great cut. Anyone know when/where this was recorded?
Has to be early-to-mid 1980s... Johnny C was regrooming and exhibited an MTV vibe ... his hair is evolving throughout the decade and this view is early NGR Second Coming. The set isn't identified but looks awfully familiar - Down Home in Johnson City TN?
It is 2024, and this band sounds great. I believe they would be a top draw these days.
John Cowan is such a great singer. Sam's harmonies always on target.
Bela, Pat, and Sam's instrumental work, tops.
Cowan, the man can belt it out n make it look effortlessly
Like so many he learned at church
Chills is what they give me. I remember when they first broke out in the late 80 's 90 's that was all I would listen to. Thank you, Tim O' brien and Hot Rize ; you made my life better !
John Cowans voice is a blessing t listen to. Incredible
I have been a head bangger for 35 years. But this is one of my top ten songs of all time.
As good as it gets right there…. Sam in a tie dye and cowen in a killer green suit and bow tie 😂🥰 love love love it. Great vocals, creative solos, litterally flawless bluegrass preformance.
Badassery from start to finish 🎉
It doesn't get any better than that.
How good would it have been to see these guys back in the day.
Proud to say that I did. And, yes, they were just that awesome.
Not many can sing in such a range as John Cowan! New Grass were truly awesome!
i know Im kind of off topic but does anybody know of a good place to stream newly released tv shows online ?
@Aries Royal Flixportal :)
@Remy Harvey thank you, I went there and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :) Appreciate it !!
@Aries Royal you are welcome =)
And Sam Bush, having been lead singer for NGR before hiring John (he told a great story about that which you can find on TH-cam), sings some great harmonies.
Fantastic!!
And of course ROCKIN’ HAIR ❤
I have followed these guys since I was 16. always will love them. hey Bela
How old are you now?
That banjo solo though wow!!!!
I've literally listened to this song hundreds of times. My first NGR show was in 1991 at Strawberry festival in Yosemite. Still listening in 2020!!
and how about that banjo, guitar, mandolin and bass! Best music of this genre! Vocals are tremendous as well.
I remember the first time I heard John Cowan and then discovered New Grass REvival. My kids and I would listen to their music over and over, each time finding some new lick, tone, nuance, that we missed the previous time we heard the song. years later, we are all still fans of all these guys.
Compelling stuff. Bela Fleck is as usual absolutely amazin'
Love these guys....banjo virtuoso! won many awards....

Stranger in a strange land....
Pat Flynn is the unrecognized hero of New Grass, AWESOME!!
All that awesomeness in one room!
Awesome X 10

I could listen to these guys nonstop! Incredible!!
その昔の若い頃に京都まで3時間近くかけて LPレコードを買いに行っていました。
お気に入りの レコードを探すのが休日の楽しみでした。
最近のように錦町、河原町も混んでいませんでした。
Sam Bush your are awesome and Bela is no slouch...okay, he's unbelievable. Hi Bela how are you?....Jack Baker NYC

Believe it or not John Cowan filled in for lead singer of the Dooby Brothers in a concert we went to at Taho back somewhere in the 1990's. He's the best.
Good lord, I loves me some John Cowan!! What a set of pipes! (And what a hair do!)
ABSOLUTELY CLASSIC! IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER!!

Does anyone know where and when this was recorded?
They were ahead of their time. This is from the early 80’s. Nobody was playing them there sound sounds new even today.
I think this might be from when they played in a little tiny restaurant and bar called the Town Crier which held maybe 150 people and it was in Pawling New York I'm not sure because I saw them so many times. It does look like the town crier though
Saw them at the Circle Star theatre with Don Williams and Osage. Excellent show
these guys are tighter than a witches sphincter...so real!
Wtf haha
tighter than an Amish bride!
Congratulations!
Just different from the original - but made in its special way very professional and excellent!
A real pleasure to listen to and I like it very much!
Greetings from good ole Bavaria
Now that's what I'm talking about!!!!!!!!!
I discovered this band at my local record store. a few years ago. pretty cool. .
Hinds sights 20/20. I'd have that place packed with immediate family. Then friends, if they were lucky!
Gawd, they were astonishing...
I got to see John in Blowing Rock last month and WOW! Dude is still amazing.
dpkll5 i totally agree with you these guys need to get back for a reuninon i was raised on them and like was said on here by someone else noone else is rly close to the sound those 4 guys made together i think we all need a "revival" of new grass revival lol
No matter what you think of the music you gotta love that Flock of Seagulls haircut.
Patrick Swayze rides again
That's country bluegrass at its best!
John Cowan's singing (and hair) + Sam Bush's mando pickin and harmony + Pat Flynn's bitchin' solo + Bela Fleck's machine-gun ascending riff = a great freakin' New Grass tune!
WOW, Thats amazing!
As good as it gets !!!!
Isn't a shame when egos get in the way of a truly wonderful group; thinking they can move on and do better? These guys are terrific.
I miss New Grass.
Beautiful!
These guys are real pros.
Great song, great band! I love them!
Awesomeness.. :-)
One of the best bands in America...bella fleck is a leg end.
John Cowan is my doppleganger. At least the 16-19 yr old me. I had an amazing mullet just like his. I also play bass like him. I didnt discover him until my late 30s tho. He's great!
great talent all round

Masters all! Wish they would get back together and record.

@immelalex don;t know where I have been on these guys, just great, thanks for utube. other wise you wouldn't know of groups. like these. john cowan is really super.
@MrXrayis
I used to be a headbanger. When you're exposed to this kind of stuff it makes you forget about power chords...
Bang your head enough, you get hair like John Cowan's
300K views. I think half if it is me!
@immelalex He puts to "OMG" into "OMG"! lol. Followed him for years, Telluride Bluegrass, Lyon Bluegrass, The Aggie in Ft. Collins. I also have a few pictures taken with him. What a down to earth, kind, humble human being he is! I LOVE me some John Cowan!
dziekuje za widomość piosenka mi się odobala
what an interesting band
Epic music from a great bunch of musicians. John's hair, not so much. :)
Holy Bluegrass Mullet, Batman!
check out Sam Bush protege 18 yr old Sierra Hull, who happens to be appearing with John Cowan in Boston next month.-
The solos are all great -- even Sam's little one on the mandolin -- and vocals and harmony are outstanding, the song is wonderful. But the thing that makes it for me is ALL those THINGS the banjo is doing in and behind the music. Inventive, colorful, it is the beat and the drive; THAT's the greatest thing of a great cut.

holy shit john cowan! whats on your head?
I love the look on Sam's face at 1:23.
@redbirdjazzz
I think Bela surprised him with a riff he hadn't heard yet...
yum
Good 'ol Sam Bush.
Even Old Grass doesn't need drums!!! For me anyway.
Sam Bush rules!
Bela Fleck
What banjo is bela playing in this? Any afficianados know?
Mumford and who?
