Bobby Duke Arts That's because Disney doesn't like when it can't make money off of other people's creativity.
They didn't invent it, The Hawaiian fish hook has been around for centuries in the Islands. That means intellectual or creative rights can only apply to what is in "Moana" in terms of the actual production. Minor alterations and a slight shape change could alter all of that.
That all said, if you wanted to change the symbols and adjust the shape for sales, I would definitely recommend reaching out to the Tribal entities on Maui for their blessing and for further discourse.
In any event: beautiful work!
