The clump formation drills are super effective for replicating staging environment and getting just TONS of reps in, while doing all choreo as well. This is what helps crown sound so full on the move consistently. They just drill down each chunk, with as much simulated env. demand as possible till it’s right.
Even as a big crown fan, I think too many people don’t hear how difficult the Blue Devils music is this year, so I’m glad y’all pointed out how great they sound too!
Yes, although if there were some videos out there to actually compare that'd be great. I've only seen one from last month and just drumline sectional vids or warmups. Seems BD show is secret or am I missing something???
@donovan Crown horns are fantastic as usual. The entire technical sequence early in the show that they perform while marching is very impressive. What makes me sad is to see the waste of time with them twirling streamers and messing with fabric panels. For me it takes up too much of the show, and tips the scales BD’s way. Devs not quite as spotless but they’re dealing with a lot of different styles and some really thick harmonies. Apples and oranges, but some outstanding apples and oranges at that.
@@cairnman100 Hmm, cool, I don't seem to see BD shows posted anywhere. Cadets, BAC, Crown have full shows. BD? Some warmup clips etc but no show so can't really comment on the discussion one way or the other.
Whenever I played indoors (in another corps), the only way I could hear myself was by using earplugs. Otherwise I’m SOL, and have to kinda guess and tune by feel.
5:39 Marcus High School played this part in their 2022 show 😮 Now that i think about, Marcus does sometimes take inspiration from crown’s musical arrangements and implements them into their shows lol
Please do more reactions! These last two videos were really interesting and sort of unique as you guys are the only group out there doing DCI reaction content from a brass POV. I also really appreciate how fair you were to every corps given that you are alums and are therefore naturally a little biased. If I had to pick, I would love to see you guys react to any Crown show 2014-'19 once the 2022 content starts to dry up (since you already did '12 and '13 and I'm a huge and definitely biased Crown fan).
I got a really good video of BDs closer from last night's rehearsal on my channel. Seeing them live really sold me on their show. I still have my critiques for the show, but now I get why they're leading the pack.
In the crown lot videos I hear my corps in the back doing a bunch of our warmups (Music City 22’) and it’s weird but cool hearing it from where crown was( they where about a football field and half away)
Thanks for respectfully pointing out how contrived and formulaic Crown's double/triple tonguing passages are. Since I'm a drummer and don't grasp the difficulty of performing these passages, I find them about as musically redeeming as listening to someone play Arban's etudes in a practice room.
Love these difficult rhythms/articulations. Mad respect for these musicians and their teachers. Can we please get stronger melodic contribution? Taking nothing from their achievement of this book. Would love to hear music with stronger melodies represented.
You guys are awesome. Thank you for making the videos. BD’s are good, but they stand still most of the time. Their music is challenging but intonation is not great. I have seen all three of these corps in person this year. They are all amazing. I think Crown & Crusaders shows are more challenging as they are moving (marching) through several of their difficult passages. My top three Corps in 2022 - 1. Crown 2. Boston 3. BD
Interesting perspective Mark! I took the time to record the top three corps' hornlines on the move and in reality, the Blue Devils actually move the most while playing. Blue Devils - 3:56 Carolina Crown - 3:08 Boston Crusaders - 2:49 I totally get having a personal preference for one group over another, but when so many people make these blanket statements about BD not moving and playing, it begs the question about whether that opinion is based on fact or bias. I encourage you to time the hornlines yourself, or at the very least rewatch the shows with the intent of specifically analyzing the visual demand in combination with playing. That being said, I do agree that BD is the least in tune out of the three, however they have the most demanding chordal complexity out of the three as well. Appreciate your support and hope you find these stats interesting! - Everett
Crown is very very good at what they do, but I’d like to buy a high note. They simply don’t go there. Got the horses to do it, but they are (relatively) risk-averse. Very good at “staying in their lane”...but come on. They have taken brass like 8 out of the last 10 years? Show us something new, stretch the boundaries a bit.
Crown stayed at my high school and you would’ve thought they were a high school the way Harloff was talking to them. Really puts into perspective the standards influencing the outcome.
BD was slotted a month ago and personally I don't love the content of the show. Their GE is not deserved, Crown and maybe Bloo have a better program purely from a GE perspective. Crown is winning brass period. SCV will win drums with Bloo as a close second. BD will still win the show because the judges like whatever it is that they are doing. The top 7-8 are all VERY good corps considering DCI took a year off
YOU THOUGHT WE WERE DONE??? 🧐🧐STOP THINKING 🤫🤫

That's really cool, I've never really thought about it that deep and why it's super effective for playing w/choreography

they literally all marched blue devils they are biased in my opinion
Heard BD live for the first time last night. Now I understand why they're currently in 1st place.

its about the c o n t e n t
BDs ballad is nuts
Knowing beforehand the Jacob Collier rendition of moon river, makes the hornline’s performance of it so much better
BD are really impressive given that the practice rooms under the Alamodome are incredibly hard to tune in and even hear yourself play half the time.
it is kind of a pain ngl
I didn’t think it was that bad to play in but for a dci group I’m sure it’s hard to hear everything bc of the volume
Fancy seeing you here Broden

I understand the comfortable tempo and playing on the grid, but is it still not difficult to get 24 people to double tongue together?

Who’s coming to the Atlanta regional? 👀

Commenting for Algorithm, really love watching your guys' reactions again :)
Excited for DCI Murfreesboro today!!! Seeing my fav corps here in a few hours!

Starting off with Crown at the beginning, was that "Chasing the Moment by Michael Klesch" they were working on?

Spoiler they did

In retrospect, this hornline had a lot of power but were sloppy at times. Visually they were great. Their score was a little high
brass bus needs Lead Trumpet Mama over the mic
Everett’s prediction right on! Curious if any predictions were made about Ghostlight during this time of the season back in ‘19?

yeah they haven’t pushed boundaries musically since like 2014

go to 7:23 and slow down the video. Just wow. and then play that hit at normal speed.
