  • SSDs (solid state drives) can experience wear over time, but to help you identify when this is happening, they have wear indicators. When they show up, it’s a good time to think about a replacement or at least maintenance. This video covers how to fix SSDs and other common problems they can cause.
    This series has covered the virtues of SSDs over HDDs (hard disk drives), such as their blistering speed, their energy efficiency, and their lack of moving parts making them less prone to mechanical failure. However, they are not immune to it. Tires can only cycle so many times before they are physically unable to continue. The same is true of SSDs. An SSD’s limit of program erase cycles to the NAND is called terabytes written (TBW).
    Symptoms
    SSDs close to failure will show one or more of the following signs:
    If you notice crashes during startup, check whether restarting the computer more than once temporarily allows the boot process to finish. If saving files takes an extremely long time, this could be a sign of bad blocks on your drive (the sectors in your drive that have suffered physical damage and can no longer be accessed). Physical wear and tear occurs in the standard read/write cycles of an SSD and will with enough use cause bad blocks.
    Specific files may be inaccessible, which is another indicator that the drive is failing.
    Especially when performing intense read/writes, some SSDs can run hot. That’s why some SSDs are sold with heatsinks. SSDs are still less prone to overheating than older HDDs. That means unusually high temperatures could be a sign the drive is failing.
    Remember that wear is not the only thing that could cause these symptoms: physical damage is a factor that can never be ruled out. The SMART Monitoring tool is one way of monitoring your SSD.
    SMART
    SMART stands for Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology. It’s a system built into most modern HDDs and SSDs, designed to monitor the status of your drive and identify issues to fix. CrystalDiskInfo is a great tool to tap into SMART on your SSD and provide a concise report on the status of your drive.
    Certain SSD manufacturers have their own tools to monitor drive health. The Kingston SSD Manager (KSM) application provides users with the ability to monitor and manage various aspects of their Kingston solid-state drive.
    Summary
    While keeping up with SSD maintenance is possible (see • Extend Your SSD’s Life... for more), SSDs are not repairable items. They must be replaced when they fail or are about to die. However, techniques exist to identify impending issues, so you can back up and replace before things get bad.
    Check for crashing during startup, saving files taking too long, inability to access or read specific files, and if your drive overheats. Monitoring applications can automate some of this. Rather than being paranoid about drive failures, have an app that runs in the background to alert you in case of trouble. It’s a solid win.

    I thermal cam'd the HDD out of my Xbox One X along with the SATA SSD i replaced the HDD with. Under heavy load the HDD ran at 135F, while the SSD ran at 85F. that 50F drop in temps did make the Xbox run quieter & cooler

    Off topic but another tip: I suddenly had multiple USB3 port failures on two of my machines, one running Ubuntu, the other Windows 7. The ports would not supply power to the connected devices but otherwise worked fine. I reflashed the bios’s in both machines and restored proper operation but I built the PCs 10 and 8 years ago, respectively. My guess is the coin batteries on the motherboards are finally expiring. I expected other more obvious failures when the batteries were almost dead but these were pretty subtle!

      If the coin batteries are indeed expiring, you are gonna experience a whole lot of problems beside the lack of PD from your USB ports.

      @@purplecrayon7281 That’s what I was expecting but after 8-10 years, and the problem appearing on two unrelated systems, replacing the battery is a cheap if inconvenient fix…can’t imagine anything else being the cause. Reflashing, the BIOS solved the problems for now but something must have gotten corrupted. Neither machine is powered up for long periods and the Windows PC is in my observatory and with our current weather conditions, rarely used until conditions improve. Perhaps that’s why my even older laptops are still OK - one is my camera server and hasn’t been shutdown for several years.

    Please help provide info. I am wanting to upgrade from one SSD 1tb to a new SSD 2tb. Is there any possible issue with this? Such as, if there are bad blocks on the current drive, should I not upgrade. Also, system migration vs disk migration. Which is more ideal?

    • @purplecrayon7281
      @purplecrayon7281 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Are the number of bad blocks increasing over time or does it stay constant? If it's constant and you are still able to access every file, it should be ok to do the upgrade.

      @@kingston I had an issue with one of first kingston ssd . After two Years from time I bought it health on 98 % , performance about 96 % . then few days later i see " Media wear off" . It was not caused by reach total data written on drive , This was System disk in my garage , used from time to time . But the producer set warranty date limit . After modify this variable ssd works to this day like nothing ever happen . It is been more than 12 or more years since I bought it . Works perfectly till this day .

    SSD's can actually produce more heat than an HDD

    • @metalvideos1961
      @metalvideos1961 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They still have a max temp they can reach. It is not hot usually because the normal operating temperature range for an SSD is between 86°F and 149°F, or 30°C to 65°C. If the temperature exceeds 70°C, the storage device will fail to operate and reach the end of product life. so as you can read if they get over 65c they can be damaged. most hard drives goes up to max 50c. but some Seagate drives can still operate at 65c.
