“We don’t do good works to get into a state of justification. Good works flow from a state of justification.” This is the first time I’ve heard a Catholic say this and it makes me happy. Good teaching!
When in scripture says that WORKS can't save you they are referring to THE LAW. Jesus superseded the Law and thru Him you are saved you can never keep perfect law so it can not save you BUT When they say WITHOUT WORKS YOU ARE NOT SAVED they are referring to Good Works of Love for others. Get away from Me I don't know you. Salvation can be lost. it is not a right. Thru sin and selfishness you lose your salvation. Satan believes in Jesus. Anyone can believe in Him and not be saved. You must also confess your sins and be truly contrite. If you are in a state of sin Grace is cut off.
@@christiandpaul2022 Faith isn't just believing in God, it's believing God's promises as Paul points out in Romans 4 and elsewhere. @@Bibleguy89-uu3nr 'be gone from me i don't know you' ring a bell? Without the corporal and spiritual works or living a sinful life cancel your salvation.
Human beings have always wanted and tried to save themselves from their own sins and earn their own eternal salvation. It is part of our sinful nature to do so. But there is no amount of human good works that could ever satisfy the demands of perfect holiness before YHWH because we “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). But Jesus, The Christ, was SINLESS and He satisfied all the demands of perfect righteousness. So He shed His own blood and died for our sins in order to redeem us. Then He rose from the dead and victoriously offered that glorious gift of eternal life to anyone and everyone who believes in Him and His promise to give us this gift. Hallelujah, What a Savior!! AND NOW we are FREE in Christ - at LIBERTY to LOVE OTHERS! Shalom (PTK)
Because Mr Akin, was very kind in offering to send literature to this sincere believer but not Catholic, which makes all the difference,I’d like to donate to Catholic Answers. God bless. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!!
Mary didn't die for you, didn't save you, can't hear you, and isn't God. Christ never once prayed to his mom, he prayed exclusively to his Father who is God in heaven. Follow his example and don't commit idolatry.
True salvation reverses the order of and redefines ‘works’ as opposed to the world. When someone sees the truth about their own depravity and receives revelation on what they are actually being saved FROM - eternal damnation - there is a depth of gratitude to God for salvation for being set free, such that it’s natural to love Him and others, and this grows with more revelation of Him.
so true, faith can be outwardly shown by you faith and faith is dead without works, but you can not work you way to heaven, but only through believing that the Son of God died on the cross and repenting/turning from your sins
Remember that Jesus curses the tree that bears no fruit. The servant who didn't invest his talent was punished. The wedding guest who showed up without his garment was beaten and cast into the darkness. Faith without works is dead.
@@JesusIsLord7773 So a person who isn't """saved""" cannot do good works? Do you have any idea how many theological issues this nonsensical, presupposed belief of yours cause?
Mr. Akin gave an excellent answer. Dr. Brandt Pitre of Catholic Productions explained it another way which also shed light on the topic. I don't understand how Protestants without fail, assail the Catholic Church on this topic, when in fact, when you ask them to explain their belief, they declare exactly what Mr.Akin stated.
Am I right in thinking that there is no disagreement between protestants and catholics about this? I know they often think there is, but listening to yourself and others explain both positions all I hear is an observer effect. It's humans failing to understand one another but if they did they would realise they're saying the same thing. Unless I'm missing something. Am I right or wrong?
Basically, yes, the faith and works discussion is far more controversial than it needs to be and most of it comes from straw men. Works alone don’t get you into a state of grace, and a merely intellectual faith won’t get you to heaven. God puts a gift into your hands, and you have to work to keep that gift and grow with it. You can also do work by letting go or even throwing the gift away and stomping on it.
Pretty much the difference is we believe we are saved By Faith where protestants say they are saved by Faith alone which is wrong. I guess it’s just the terminology they use. Faith is never alone.
@@georgeibrahim7945 Yes but when they say they're saved by faith alone they're talking about the instant of being saved from the state of being incapable of such works that Jimmy spoke of too. On that count both agree. Then Catholics refer to the process of salvation (which we most certainly do with fear and trembling according to the Bible) but for some reason protestants also acķnowledge this without including it as part of being saved. So both sides acknowledge both elements but it's how they choose to define salvation - as an instant or as a process. In reality it's both. So it's like observing light as a wave or a particle - whichever you look for you will see. An observer effect limited beings should expect to occur. But to God we can trust there is no contradiction.
@Jozo Kulis That's another issue where I hear both arguments and I think both are right about everything except that they think the other is wrong. I really don't get why there was division in the first place. Like, maybe there were abuses that caused reformers to respond but it looks like official doctrine never supported those abuses and now everyone sounds like they're just describing the same thing from different angles. Obviously this is just my perspective but I honestly cannot see the errors.
I think that much of the confusion between Catholic and Protestant views on works can be attributed to differences in terminology. What Catholics refer to as "ongoing justification," Protestants refer to as "sanctification." Martin Luther said that true justification will always result in sanctification, but justification must be seen as the basis for sanctification, not vice versa. Luther and the other theologians during the sixteenth century said that sanctification will always be an incomplete process during our earthly lives. Some people will progress further than others, but we will never be free from sin, hence the need for daily repentance.
I believe that it's truly impossible to be saved through grace and not have good works become a result of that Faith. The Power of Christ Jesus working through our heart will become a lightning rod of our good works in life.
Why did Luther notice that believers often do not do the good works that result from saving faith. He blames them for taking advantage of the liberty they have and for not being committed to the gospel. The Gospel, by which they have been delivered from burdens and troubles so manifold, and might feel a little shame because like pigs and dogs they retain no more of the Gospel than such a lazy, pernicious, shameful, carnal liberty! Why wasn’t Faith alone enough for him Luther asks this question can you answer it How can it be that some people have enough faith to be saved but not enough to do good works that are pleasing to God?🤦♀🤦♀
"We don't do good works to get IN to a state of justification; good works flow FROM a state of justification". I heard someone much smarter than I commenting on the faith w/out works is dead passage and they said basically the same thing but the topic was faith. Some people think that w/out works true faith cannot be, but the opposite is true. Because of faith, this is what enables us to do those good works. It's almost unavoidable. So if we aren't doing good works, then what truly is the health of our faith? We may have it on our tongues but do we have it in our hearts?
"Let those who are not found living as He taught be understood to be no Christians - even though they profess with the lip the precepts of Christ. For not those who make profession, but those who do the works, shall be saved according to His word." -Justin Martyr
I think the only part that was unclear was the term "we grow in our righteousness, or grow in our justification, over the course of the Christian life by doing good works in cooperation with God’s grace." Once we are justified by God's grace we are fully justified. I do agree that we do have to work thru God's grace to continue to be "growing in Christlike-ness" after being justified.

This is one of the clearest explanations I've heard on this. I still have some questions though. It seems like you very much say that we are not saved by our works but by the grace of God and that our works stem from knowing that God's grace is what saves us. So rather than doing good works in order to boast or claim higher status over others. These supernatural works stem as gratitude from the Grace of God and our desire to become more Christ like. My question now would be what would this mean for something like baptism. Is that considered a work that is necessary for salvation? Or is baptism done as a response to the grace of God bestowed upon us and a desire for us and our children to be more Christ like?
We're Justified by Grace and we're Sanctified principally by Grace because it is the Holy Spirit who works in us - all we have to do is acquiese to the work being done by God and he rewards us in the next life for having allowed Him to work through us. Is that a fair statement?
Amen! I’m a protestant and so I disagree with the Catholic Church on much dogma but this dogma was wholly on point. I’m emailing a Catholic deacon about these matters partly bc I’m concerned about the salvation of ppl within the church. He has disputed the points made in this video. I’m impressed that a proudly Catholic source has educated on proper Pauline theology! I’m also a former overseas missionary kid from Argentina, where I discussed these matters often. No Catholic that I’ve met up to now has properly understood xian dogma. Most don’t understand Catholic dogma either. Very well done sir!
Catholic Answers are closet protestants. What does Jimmy Akin mean around 4:30 time marker about Abraham already being justified? I thought in James 2:20, it states that James was justified by him following through on what He believed God was telling him to do. So which is it? Was Abraham justified by following through, or was He already justified and only his works (actions) will be rewarded in heaven? Can someone clarify what Jimmy is talking about here?
Okay, but what about the works before the justification? If some friend of mine who is a self proclaimed atheist does good works even greater and better and with a great impact on society, what differenciates that works from one who is justified? 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
I am not a Catholic and actually know very little about their actual doctrine. That is why I watched this video. In 70 years, I have not even had much contact with any Catholics concerning Christianity. That is what interested me in this video. I must say that I was quite pleased with what I heard. There is so much deception and false teaching about salvation in the non-Catholic world that it was refreshing to listen to this presentation from a Catholic. I would only add one clarification that I think more accurately describes what is going on with works and salvation. Mr. Akin says that it is impossible to do supernatural works of the Spirit before salvation because one does not yet have the Spirit. I would not call the good works after conversion - supernatural. I can help a little old lady across the street before I am saved and do the exact same "work" after I am saved. It does not magically become some supernatural act after salvation. What has changed is why I am doing the same act. Before salvation, I may be doing it to feel good about myself and boast about what a good person I am. After salvation, I would do the same act but do it out of my faith in Jesus and love for God and my fellow man. This eliminates all boasting by the law of faith. (Rom 3:27) The nature of the act has not changed. What has changed is my motivation for doing it.
We aren't justified once we do all 3 of the following things that Jimmy says we first need to do to be saved which are: believing, repenting, and getting baptized. Ephesians 2:8-10 clearly states that we are justified through faith alone, not by works. Ephesians 2:8-10 "8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." I am not devaluing works. Works are very important as the last verse demonstrates that God desires for us to be transformed in doing good works. All I am saying is that works do not play into the actual justification when it occurs. Justification is by faith alone, which is why it was enough for Jesus to tell the criminal on the cross next to Him who said, "Jesus remember me when You enter Your kingdom", that he will be in paradise with Him. Works are a reflection of the transformation that is occurring within a person who has already been justified in Christ.
You are exactly right. It is belief, faith, trust alone in what Jesus did on the cross. Repentance is agreeing with God about sin. No works, not even baptism, is required for salvation.
This sounds very close to how many Protestants would understand the role good works in salvation as well. If Jimmy is correct about Rome’s teaching on this, it sounds like this shouldn’t be pressed as a point of disagreement between Catholics and Protestants.
Is not the "stages of justification" whics are "past, present, and future" what Protestants call differently ? Namely, Justification, Sanctification, Glorification? However, the bottom line is: Only Christ's work on the cross saves man and man does not have any participation --- work from himself / own will decision --- to save himself.
I still fail to see the difference here perhaps because of how theologians communicate the knowledge they have. It appears theologians wanna use different terms to refer to the same thing, from a street person like me. Yet, if there is a difference, then this is how I picked it. Catholic: Indeed, you saved by faith, but you must continue with the good works to get the rewards. Protestants: Once you are saved by faith, that's it. You are saved. The good works that you are doing is just the fruit of the new life you had. You see in words, you reverse the two things, but in practice they are SAME. Same in a sense that Faith and Works (good works) involved in practice.
I think the difference is that Catholics see salvation as the continuous process of sanctification starting at baptism, continuing through life, death, and purgatory (if need be) unto the beatific vision. This is in opposition to the Protestant (evangelical) view that a person is saved by their faith and declared righteous by God.
can someone please tell me how this is different from the Protestant teaching because dont they believe that you're justified and then you go do good works? and that they dont save you? im struggling to understand what the difference is. thanks.
The question was about James yet most of Jimmy’s answer was about Paul. When Janes says faith without works is dead he is referring to the works of mercy. Jesus says in Matt 15:8 that people honor him with their mouth but their hearts are far from him. The devil can give lip service , but we demonstrate that Christ lives in us through works. How did the people know that Jesus the Carpenters son was the Messiah? Yes, by faith but also by works, miracles and the awesome work of the resurrection. People know that Christ lives in us by our works of mercy. It’s to many liars and snakes in the Church all dressed up in robes, speaking Latin and Hebrew, quoting scripture but our wicked wolves in sheep clothing.
Seemingly, what Mr. Akin has said, is that we DON'T HAVE TO do Works to receive salvation, or even to receive anything at all. We are just 'rewarded with salvation' for doing 'good works which we don't have to earn' anyways. This apparently, makes Works useless and, if you won't get saved through Works, you'll still get saved through Faith
Essentially we are to do good works and not just faith alone with Jesus. But these good works are to be practiced with love to one another until the end of one's life. Matthew 7:22- 24: 22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' ---- these are good works aren't they? Yes. 23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' ----- Why Lord? didn't we just do good works such as those in verse 22? 24"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. --- which I believed impliedly saying that the whole law or commandments of Jesus should be practice by doing His good works with love and working them out until the end of one's life: 1 Corinthians 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing Philippians 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling" Matthew 24:13 "But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved." ---- Both good works and faith are gifts or graces from God so no one can boast. Ephesians 2: 8-10: 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. .
Galatians 2:16 “know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” It’s very hard to twist this. Clearly says that one is not saved by works by faith in Christ.
Works of the law on your passage is mosaic law and not Good works by God’s grace which we are to do: Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus TO DO good works, which God prepared in advance for us TO DO.. So what will happen to one’s soul if we didn't DO these good works prepared in advance by God?
@@joshuaminemusic yes it is as it was impliedly says in Ephesians 2 verse 10. that is why you need to answer my question what if we didn't do this good works?
A guilty conscience can lead one to do strange things. The burden of keeping the faith and volunteering all the time can be an overwhelming burden that's not very Christian.
POPE BENEDICT XVI: “Jesus did not come to teach a philosophy, but to show the way, indeed, the path that leads to life. This path is love, which is the expression of true faith. If you love your neighbor with a pure and generous heart, it means you really know God. But if say you have faith but do not love your brother, then you are not a true believer. God does not dwell in you. As St. James writes: ‘Faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead’.
That sounds exactly like what a confessional protestant believes, everything besides final justification. I would push back against a second round of justification for the faithful saint, considering they were already judged on the cross with Christ.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Philippians 2:13-13 RSV Paul's testimony here speaks of an ongoing process or struggle, where if we remain faithful to the end, we will be saved.
From a letter to the Corinthians by Saint Clement I, pope and martyr (Nn. 31-33: Funk 1, 99-103) From the first, faith has been God’s means of justifying men "God’s blessing must be our objective, and the way to win it our study. Search the records of ancient times. Why was our father Abraham blessed? Was it not because his upright and straightforward conduct was inspired by faith? As for Isaac’s faith, it was so strong that, assured of the outcome, he willingly allowed himself to be offered in sacrifice. Jacob had the humility to leave his native land on account of his brother, and go and serve Laban. He was given the twelve tribes of Israel. Honest reflection upon each of these examples will make us realize the magnitude of God’s gifts. All the priests and levites who served the altar of God were descended from Jacob. The manhood of the Lord Jesus derived from him. Through the tribe of Judah, kings, princes and rulers sprang from him. Nor are his other tribes without their honor, for God promised Abraham: Your descendants shall be as the stars of heaven. It is obvious, therefore, that none of these owed their honor and exaltation to themselves, or to their own labors, or to their deeds of virtue. No; they owed everything to God’s will. So likewise with us, who by his will are called in Christ Jesus. We are not justified by our wisdom, intelligence, piety, or by any action of ours, however holy, but by faith, the one means by which God has justified men from the beginning. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. What must we do then, brothers? Give up good works? Stop practicing Christian love? God forbid! We must be ready and eager for every opportunity to do good, and put our whole heart into it. Even the Creator and Lord of the universe rejoices in his works. By his supreme power he set the heavens in their place; by his infinite wisdom he gave them their order. He separated the land from the waters surrounding it and made his own will its firm foundation. By his command he brought to life the beasts that roam the earth. He created the sea and all its living creatures, and then by his power set bounds to it. Finally, with his own holy and undefiled hands, he formed man, the highest and most intelligent of his creatures, the copy of his own image. Let us make man, God said, in our image and likeness. And God made man, male and female he made them. Then, when he had finished making all his creatures, God gave them his approval and blessing: Increase and multiply, he charged them. We must recognize, therefore, that all upright men have been graced by good works, and that even the Lord himself took delight in the glory his works gave him. This should inspire us with a resolute determination to do his will and make us put our whole strength into the work of living a Christian life."
Romans [2:1-11] As a first step in his demonstration that Jews enjoy no real moral supremacy over Gentiles, Paul explains that the final judgment will be a review of performance, not of privilege. From this perspective Gentiles stand on an equal footing with Jews, and Jews cannot condemn the sins of Gentiles without condemning themselves. * [2:6] Will repay everyone according to his works: Paul reproduces the Septuagint text of Ps 62:12 and Prv 24:12.
Jas 2:14-24, 26 "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,” but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead. Indeed someone might say, “You have faith and I have works.” Demonstrate your faith to me without works, and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works. You believe that God is one. You do well. Even the demons believe that and tremble. Do you want proof, you ignoramus, that faith without works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by the works. Thus the Scripture was fulfilled that says, Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called the friend of God. See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead."
The disagreement is in the nature of justification itself. The righteousness of God is not Christ's personal righteousness attributed to the believer but rather the righteousness from God by which he makes the believer intrinsically just, holy and pleasing to God in their soul and it is upon this basis that God pronounces the blessing to them of having been pardoned and set free from sin and condemnation, having received the gift of friendship with God. Or one can say that God's pronouncement creates that in the soul.. in either case their is no justification without the interior work of Grace to cleanse and make holy the person from within.. With Lutherans, their belief is that justification is alien, extrinsic, and forensic....it happens only in the heavenly courtroom, so to speak, and not interiorly in the soul. Also, with Catholics, it is both an event and a process and a culmination. They call it initial, progressive, and final justification. The initial gift of justification is without works...it is impossible to merit the grace of justification but once it is received one must cooperate with grace , which is itself by grace ( because without Him we can do nothing and we have nothing that we have not received and we cannot first give to God that he should recompense us, he takes the initiative in the order of grace) in order to grow in justification/ righteousness as a Child of God, and a person must be alert because one can lose the grace of justification by mortal sins, which destroy the divine charity in the soul and bring defilement and estrange the person from God, through their own choice. One must preserve in doing good as St Paul says in Romans 2, to be justified at the judgement seat of Christ. So there are key differences between Lutheran and Catholic descriptions of the nature of justification. I am Eastern Orthodox and our belief is similar in many ways to the Roman understanding but we emphasize growing into the Divine likeness( theosis)to fulfill our original purpose and this is all a part of that.
At 2:58, Jimmy says "It is impossible for us to do supernaturally good works prior to the point in our lives where we convert and we're justified...we come to God, we believe, we repent, we get baptized, he justifies us and gives us his grace." This is an excellent summary of new birth, the true salvation process and it doesn't fit with the justification by infant baptism model. But it is so encouraging to hear the gospel presented clearly at least for the initial entrance point of justification.
They make this so unnecessarily difficult for people to understand. If you practice love (charity) you are an adoptive child of God. If you practice sin you are of the devil. You reap what you sow whether good to eternal life or sin unto death. Favoritism by God is excluded because we are adoptive children by Grace rather than legal children by way of Mosaic Law (that is we are saved not by circumcision as some Judaizers claimed, but rather an interior "circumcision of the heart" which compels us to love our neighbor and is expressed by doing good to others, which is the true fulfilment of the Commandments). 1 John 3:4-10 "Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well. Indeed, sin is lawlessness. But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins, and in Him there is no sin. No one who remains in Him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has seen Him or known Him. "Little children, let no one deceive you: The one who practices righteousness is righteous, just as Christ is righteous. The one who practices sin is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the very start. This is why the Son of God was revealed, to destroy the works of the devil. "Anyone born of God refuses to practice sin, because God’s seed abides in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother." Galatians 6:7-8 "Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return. The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life." Colossians 2:11 "In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of your sinful nature, with the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands." Romans 2:28-29 "A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew because he is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come from men, but from God."
Good works stem from a belief, a trust and a faith in Jesus as your atoning saviour. Being born again, as Jesus referred to it means you die to yourself and are reborn in the identity of Jesus Christ… it’s a relationship with God
parable of the rich man and Lazarus. One person is responsible for self. Profits, teachers, apostles, Saints, plus The Laws, or commandments to abide by. Can't get out of jail to give warning. A person who has good and plenty has more responsibility for charity and be not be selfish.
the bible clearly says in the n.t. at least 5 times that salvation is by faith, NOT works. truly good works are the result of salvation, not the cause of it. the roman catholic church cannot provide faith or salvation in any way, including the eucharist/mass. it is a gift from God.
Justification is a act of God, when God justifies the sinner, it is not on going, justification is like a legal term in that God declares you innocent before Him not on the basis of works but on the basis of faith in christ alone, resting on jesus work on the cross, sanctifcation is after , part of walking in godliness, God has credited to us jesus righteousness, all by grace, we dont deserve it that's why its grace, undeserved favour, good works is the fruit of salvation the sinner is justified by God with christ jesus righteousness, we become a new creation in christ, God is the one who justifies , his the one who santifies, the one who glorifies, All from God, nothing to do with us ,
Salvation is definitely by good works - faith, though not useless, is fruitless and powerless without good works, which are its necessary and natural fruits. Christ preached salvation by works - He had far more to say about the need to do good works, than about faith. The perversion of Christianity concocted by Luther & his imitators is all thanks to their perversion (or possibly misunderstanding) of St Paul’s teaching, aggravated by Luther’s generalising, to the experience of all Christians, of his own psychological problems. That good works done in a state of grace are meritorious, and merit an increase of grace from God, is Catholic teaching, & no Catholic should concede anything to those who deny that truth. It is not negotiable. That the grace, both to do meritorious good works, and to increase in sanctifying grace, comes entirely and only from God through Christ in the Holy Spirit, does not alter the fact that meritorious good works are truly meritorious and truly merit an increase in sanctifying grace, just as the Church teaches.
What about people who are good but worship other gods thinking they are true God? Will they be judged by their works or condemned because they do not worship Christ?
James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. Hebrews 3:6 "But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory." So we see that we persevere by faith. The mistake would be to think that we need works to merit our righteousness. No, our works justify us on the basis of our faith. For when Abraham offered Issac, The Angel of the Lord said "Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” His works demonstrated that he feared God, aka, believed. We are accounted righteous based on our belief. We cannot add to the righteousness we have been given by doing good works, as it seems to be saying in the video above.
Please continue to verse 10 “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus TO DO good works, which God prepared in advance for us TO DO” --- so essentially we need to do good works as Christians to be saved.. Otherwise, what will happen to our soul if we didn't do good works prepared in advance by God for us???
It is sad that people don't understand the bible. We are judged by our deeds, our actions what the Bible calls works. If we truly believe in Jesus then we will live like he teaches. If we live in sin we will recieve the results, the fruits, of living that way which always leads to suffering. When we have a change of heart and turn to Christ in faith believing he is who he said he is and being baptized into his name and living according to his word we recieve the forgiveness of our sins and living according to God's Word we have inner peace and joy in the Holy Spirit which is the kingdom of heaven within us and it is the Spirit of Christ himself that gives us a new spirit and a regenerated heart and we become alive to God in Christ who is the satisfaction, the propitiation, of our sins in the sight of God. And when we sin if we confess our sins God is faithful to forgive us of our sins and living that way is pleasing to God and is our salvation in and of itself. According to the bible if we say we believe in Jesus and yet continue to live a lifestyle of sin we are deceiving ourselves and don't know Christ and the faith we claim to have is a dead faith because without the actions, the fruits whatever faith people claim to have is dead and not true faith at all. We live in a cause and effect world and irregardless what we claim to believe if we are living a life that is sinful, unhealthy and destructive we will recieve the results of those actions. Hell is nothing more than the inevitable results of a life lived badly and destructive.
As James say’s what is faith without works? Please don’t get “works”of the Law confused with Charitable works of love. Jesus said come into my fathers kingdom because you did so and so for me. They said lord when did we do that for you. So their works of love came out of a love for Jesus they didn’t know they had-only Jesus ultimately knows what’s in a person’s heart. Then Jesus said go away from me you accursed because you didn’t do this to the least of my brethren. These so called christians had cast out devils etc. but in truth they were hypocrites who’d done nothing or done it for their own glory. And yes only Jesus does save but he does it through his mystical body on earth the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH founded on the infallible Rock of Peter two millennia ago! There’s NO salvation outside the holy Catholic Church. God bless. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!!
How do we say 'yes' to Jesus' gift of salvation? Is it a one-time, once-saved, always-saved event one-time as a 12 year old child? Or is it a long-life of prayers, sacraments, & good works?
It’s sad because protestant’s are protestant they get well and truly confused between works of charity and works of the Law. And sadly a lot of Catholic’s also don’t understand when they should. These day’s more than any other there’s NO excuse to know or at least have the help at hand if needed. We Catholic’s have a duty to learn and then to lovingly help protestant’s. Catholic’s have NO excuse. Our hand’s have to be full when we stand in front of Jesus when we die. They’ll be NO excuses. And to protestant’s if you truly love Jesus Christ then join his mystical body on earth the ONE HOLY CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH founded on the infallible Rock of Peter two millennia ago! Protestantism is man made not of God is 40,000 cults which are pagan! I know that will shock protestant’s and some Catholic’s but it’s the painful truth-please think about it. I as a Marian Catholic submit totally,(not easy to do),to the infallible Magisterium of the holy Catholic Church. That’s the difference between Catholic and protestant. Protestant’s submit to no one but themselves and that’s idolatry. God bless. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!!
But this part of the human race to which God has promised pardon and a share in His eternal kingdom, can they be restored through the merit of their own works? God forbid. For what good work can a lost man perform, except so far as he has been delivered from perdition? Can they do anything by the free determination of their own will? Again I say, God forbid.
Im afraid this is Protestant theology at it's worst. I listened to this talk a third time and when I heard Jimmy say that "when we come to Christ and accept him into our heart and become baptised??? That's not Catholic teaching. We are Baptised as infants when we do not know what we are receiving and that is when we are saved John 3;6. Past tense - we are being saved through the Gospel - present tense and hope to be saved through the grace of God - future tense. I'm actually shocked at Jimmy.. I agree we are saved by faith, as in saved from Hell. But we are not saved from the fire of purgatory and justified by works through faith alone. Even Paul tells us that we can loose our salvation 1 Cor 9;27
1:50 no, he means works, because that's what he says. The mosaic law IS good works. This distinction is not found in the text 2:30 no, because only christians can do good works, everything that stems from unbelief is sin. Man is totally depraved, and does not do ANY good. It's impossible to do good works by "human nature" as he calls it pre-justification because man's nature is "only wicked all the time" 3:25 that... Is not the RCC view of baptism... You baptize babies, what's he talking about here? His 2 distinct categories of human good works and supernatural good works are wholly invented and found nowhere in the text. 4:00 he's confusing justification with sanctification. I agree we were made for good works, but gradually becoming a better more Christly person is sanctification, not justification. You don't "grow" in justification because it is a one time irreveraible switch flip. To be justified is to be declared righteous. 4:15 James' point is Abraham and Rahab PROVED their faith by their works, he says right there Abraham's faith is what justified him. He's using them as examples of people of faith who ALSO did works as evidence of their faith. He's writing specifically to combat people who claim faith but continue living sinful lives with no discernable change in behavior. Big difference. If there are THREE kinds of justification, why does no Apostle ever say that?
Faith Alone Clement of Rome All these, therefore, were highly honoured, and made great, not for their own sake, or for their own works, or for the righteousness which they wrought, but through the operation of His will. And we, too, being called by His will in Christ Jesus, are not justified by ourselves, nor by our own wisdom, or understanding, or godliness, or works which we have wrought in holiness of heart; but by that faith through which, from the beginning, Almighty God has justified all men; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. John Chrysostom The patriarch Abraham himself before receiving circumcision had been declared righteous on the score of faith alone: before circumcision, the text says, “Abraham believed God, and credit for it brought him to righteousness.” “What is the “law of faith?” It is, being saved by grace. Here he shows God’s power, in that He has not only saved, but has even justified, and led them to boasting, and this too without needing works, but looking for faith only.” To say the early church did not teach Faith alone is a BOLD FACE LIE.
Nice try. Have you heard of a word concept fallacy? Even Thomas Aquinas has used the phrase “faith alone” in his commentary on Romans. Do you really believe Clement of Rome, Thomas Aquinas and John Chrysostom taught the doctrine of “sola fide” as taught by Luther (most Protestant don’t have the same Soteriology as Luther and the Lutherans, which is actually closer to the Catholic view)? No Orthodox ☦️ or Roman Catholic Christian has ever taught, or teaches today, that we are “justified by works”. We are justified by faith.
@@P-el4zd then they are wrong. Ultimately fallible flip-flopping theological men mean very little to me. Thats why scripture is sufficient. But I’m pretty sure they meant exactly what they said just as Paul meant exactly what he said

isnt James just sayin that the good works where just the evidency that we have already Had Faith to begin with???...insted of sayin that what his just saying is that whe are growing in a cooperation with ower justificatioon I Mean if we read the book of Judas we can see that are false christians that said that faith gives permission for people living in imoral life, i see that book of James was adressing this type of people showing that that faith without works is dead.
James was written to Jews not Grace age Christians, the audience James was writing to are people transitioning from law to Christ, they had different requirements than the body of Christ today has, James 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. Matthew10:5-6 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not: 6But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Matthew 15:24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Romans15:8 Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: we are not Israel we are only grafted in as far as being fellow heirs and the promises in no other way are we Israel , the way of salvation for early Israel converts was , 1Water Baptism, but in the body of christ its baptized by THE SPIRIT into the body of christ, no water,!! so water, Faith that he is the messiah , good works . evidence of receiving the holy spirit and endurance the body of christ Just 1 corin 15:1-4 + nothing then sealed with the holy spirit , spirit baptized into the body, Given eternal life, Justification and the imputed righteousness of Christ, one atonement , one christ 2 dif requirements for 2 dif time periods , the mystery message of Grace apart from works and law wasn't revealed untill after acts 9 up till then only early Jew converts to christ,! and many mix the 2 messages or straight up think they are Israel... take parts from one way and mix it with The other way, thats why there are so many denominations and lost people like Catholics mixing the 2 and caring peters mantel instead of Pauls!!
altough james writes to jews or whatever the letter he writes steel have implications to gentiles. That could be like sayin well the letters from Paul are for gentiles therfore there are no aplication to jews.

You gave a very Protestant answer: which doesn't seem like official catholic teaching. You're answer was very similar to one i give to mormons on their attempts to do works to gain the Celestial kingdom. Good works are a byproduct of authentic Faith: not a cause of salvation a byproduct of salvation. Which is what you seemed to say. The only thing i would say is different is sanctification is the ongoing state of becoming more like christ as we mature as a Christian. The Holy Spirit leads us into this sanctification and is a witness to us that we have been born Again and are on our way to heaven.
That wasn't a Protestant answer And if you think it was, then you don't understand catholic teaching The Catholic Church rejects the idea that we are saved by our own works The Catholic Church also rejects justification by faith alone Instead we are justified by faith and works that the grace of God has produced in us The good works that justify are not works that from from our own power but from the grace of God
Works CAN NOT save/justify us. Gal2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. .. Don't believe or reject what Christ taught THROUGH Paul that applies to you and I? Gal 1:6-9 is Christs warning to you. 6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Works of the Law - rituals & rites of the Mosaic Law. Not good works, like feeding the hungry & caring for the sick. Matthew 25 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
"Good works flow from the state of justification". Catholics, did you get that? We are not saved by works. Saved by grace, through faith, not of ourselves, lest any man should boast. Good works flow from justification. In other words we don't work for our salvation, we do works as a result of our salvation. Our works are the manifestation of our transformation and not the cause of our transformation. So as he said, we can do nothing to earn. It is a gift of God. It's God's grace. Grace is an unmerited gift that God has chosen to give us. If by works, it is no longer a gift. Just as scripture says that no one is justified by the deeds of the flesh. But, we will be judged by our works. What we have done after being made righteous.
Your statement or interpretation contradicts literally Philippians 2:12 “Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed-not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence-continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,”
@@tatoon34 that is what your apologist said. If you have a problem with that, get back with him. The works come as a result of our salvation. It is not the cause of our salvation. You might want to research the scripture you quoted. It doesn't mean what you think. Salvation is a GIFT of God, grace. If you have to work to earn it, then it is no longer a gift. Grace is an unmerited gift. You can't buy it, work for it, nothing to earn it.
@@rbnmnt3341 it is not.working to earn it (salvation) but it is the way we should walk through it, and it is not automatic either because we are saved initially through faith and so one should still work or walk through it
@@tatoon34 that's a round about way of agreeing with my point. Your right, it's not automatic, we have to say yes to Jesus sacrifice. Accept Christ as our Savior, proclaim our Savior like Mary did. Other than that YES, Salvation IS FREE. Nobody paid God to send his Son. Scripture says he loved the world so much that he GAVE his only begotten Son. So as a result of that free gift, Jesus dying on the cross, we do works. Scripture says we will be judged by our works after salvation. Scripture says that NO ONE will be justified by deeds of the flesh. We are saved by God's grace through our faith, our believing in him. If we do works prior to our salvation then we are trying to buy it or earn it. Scripture by grace, through our faith NOT OF WORKS not if ourselves, lest anyone should boast.

Period. If you would read James in context, you can clearly see it's Faith that is dead if works don't follow. It's not the works that save you or deem you righteous. Just justifiies you before man, so that PEOPLE can see your faith. That's it. It profits nothing to say you have faith and no works. Catholics and work based salvation preachers read way into it with their eisegesis. Clearly. No matter how people try to spin it, it clear thought the ENTIRE new testamant. Specifically Romans 1-6 and ALL of Galatians. No question about it.
@@DesignsByTrey there's is no such words as “Real” or “ Alone” coined to word faith or faith “, therefore that is just your personal interpretations and not true
Here's what Catholics need to understand that it is impossible and this is a matter of faith. It is impossible for you to believe that Jesus Christ died for our salvation and not have works be a result of that faith. Our faith in Christ completely transforms us and our works on this planet. So no I don't believe that Good Works makes you saved. I believe it has nothing to do with works it's our faith in Christ and Christ alone and good works will come. They will come because nobody in the right mind will have that kind of faith and not have their actions transformed on this planet. We are Saved by Grace alone and Good Works with always be a sign of our Faith in Christ Jesus. So Catholics need to understand about us Protestants is that we don't believe that good works are not a factor in our salvation. No rather we believe that good works are a result of our salvation. They are the proof of our salvation. Because if you truly believe in Christ Jesus with all of your heart you will now become a new creation You actions will be transformed how you approach people will be transformed You will become aware of your own sin and your good works will flow through you because of your grace and salvation. You cannot measure a man based on his good works. For only God will measure us on what is in our heart. Because the truth is that Jesus Christ did not want us to make our good works public to be seen by others to get praised by others. No our good works should always remain secretive in nature when we do good we should do good in secret not in public This is what the gospel teaches us. Instead you're supposed to flout your good works as a sign of your faith No no no my friends my brothers and sisters We should always do our good works and hiding in secret and say nothing about it to another person. You cannot measure a man based on his good works. For only God will measure us on what is in our heart. Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar? James 2:20-21. "For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead." James 2:26 "Wherefore, brethren, labor the more, that by good works you may make sure your calling and election." 2 Peter 1:10 John 5:28-29. The dead will rise from their graves, and be judged according to their works We are saved By Grace Alone thru faith, hope, and charity (Love), but the greatest of these is charity (Love). Sorry, your pseudo theology completely contradicts the words of Jesus in Matthew 25 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne.
Christ be with you The Church speak of initial Justification This is Christ forgiveness for our sin, and it is only by this forgiveness that we may be saved. False. To be deep in the Bible is to realize the Bible came from the Catholic Church in the 4th century. To be deep in the Bible is to realize we are justified by works & not by faith alone (See James 2:24). To be deep in the Bible is realize Jesus gave His Church his very body, blood, soul, & divinity to consume until He comes again (See John 6).

@Jozo Kulis hello. Can salvation be lost?
I think that much of the confusion between Catholic and Protestant views on works can be attributed to differences in terminology. What Catholics refer to as "ongoing justification," Protestants refer to as "sanctification." Martin Luther said that true justification will always result in sanctification, but justification must be seen as the basis for sanctification, not vice versa. Luther and the other theologians during the sixteenth century said that sanctification will always be an incomplete process during our earthly lives. Some people will progress further than others, but we will never be free from sin, hence the need for daily repentance.
If you give your life saving or trying to save the life of another, then yes you are saved.
You dont need that to be saved.
Why wasn’t Faith alone enough for him
Luther asks this question can you answer it
How can it be that some people have enough faith to be saved but not enough to do good works that are pleasing to God?🤦♀🤦♀
Is that like volunteering? Work would be better.
Agreed, works are A RESULT OF Faith, not required for it.

As a Catholic, I appreciate your insight. Thanks!
10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
I am not devaluing works.
'We were created in Christ to do good Works' Of course we have paraphrased translations like NLT that say "to do good things"
What is supernatural good works?
Can we lose our justification?
Seemingly, what Mr. Akin has said, is that we DON'T HAVE TO do Works to receive salvation, or even to receive anything at all. We are just 'rewarded with salvation' for doing 'good works which we don't have to earn' anyways. This apparently, makes Works useless and, if you won't get saved through Works, you'll still get saved through Faith
Define 'Faith'.
Essentially we are to do good works and not just faith alone with Jesus. But these good works are to be practiced with love to one another until the end of one's life.
Matthew 7:22- 24:
22 Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' ---- these are good works aren't they? Yes.
23Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' ----- Why Lord? didn't we just do good works such as those in verse 22?

1 Corinthians 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing
Philippians 2:12 "Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling"
Matthew 24:13 "But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved."
---- Both good works and faith are gifts or graces from God so no one can boast. Ephesians 2: 8-10:
8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Galatians 2:16
“know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.”
It’s very hard to twist this.
@@tatoon34 of course that’s what we are called to do. That’s just not how we get saved. As the scripture says.
Philippians 2:13-13 RSV
Paul's testimony here speaks of an ongoing process or struggle, where if we remain faithful to the end, we will be saved.

So, basically the Lutheran and Roman Catholic understanding of this issue is exactly the same. Interesting.
From a letter to the Corinthians by Saint Clement I, pope and martyr
(Nn. 31-33: Funk 1, 99-103)
From the first, faith has been God’s means of justifying men
"God’s blessing must be our objective, and the way to win it our study.
Jas 2:14-24, 26
"What good is it, my brothers and sisters,
if someone says he has faith but does not have works?
Can that faith save him?
If a brother or sister has nothing to wear
and has no food for the day,
and one of you says to them,
“Go in peace, keep warm, and eat well,”
but you do not give them the necessities of the body,
what good is it?
So also faith of itself,
if it does not have works, is dead.
Indeed someone might say,
“You have faith and I have works.”
Demonstrate your faith to me without works,
and I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works.
You believe that God is one.
You do well.
Even the demons believe that and tremble.
Do you want proof, you ignoramus,
that faith without works is useless?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works
when he offered his son Isaac upon the altar?
You see that faith was active along with his works,
and faith was completed by the works.
Thus the Scripture was fulfilled that says,
Abraham believed God,
and it was credited to him as righteousness,
and he was called the friend of God.
See how a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
For just as a body without a spirit is dead,
so also faith without works is dead."
@@deaconjohn7875 Fantastic answer! Thanks for that
They attempt to explain what... And how. Never why.
The explanation is incomplete without the why.
Romans 6:23 KJV - For the wages of sin is death; but the GIFT of God is ETERNAL LIFE through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 John 3:4-10
"Everyone who practices sin practices lawlessness as well.
By this the children of God are distinguished from the children of the devil: Anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is anyone who does not love his brother."
Galatians 6:7-8
"Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return. The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life."
Colossians 2:11
"In Him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of your sinful nature, with the circumcision performed by Christ and not by human hands."
Romans 2:28-29
"A man is not a Jew because he is one outwardly, nor is circumcision only outward and physical.
The catechism addresses this
See CCC 1260 and 1281
@@MZONE991 Thank you
How many good works do you need to get to Heaven?
James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.
Hebrews 3:6 "But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory."
So we see that we persevere by faith.
I think Jimmy has thought about the subject a few times....

@@langleybeliever7789 Faith without works is dead and worthless. Even devils believe in Jesus.

Are we saved by works? No. ALL have sinned and fallen short of the Glory of God. Only Jesus can save.
There is no such thing as a victimless crime. It still takes two to tango.
You do works because you're saved,
not do works to be saved.
Matthew 7:21 23 Jesus sent the man who did good works to hell because he didn’t do the will of the father which is John 6:40
I don’t think anyone can be saved without faith. Both faith and works are necessary for salvation.
NO WORKS ARE NEEDED. You have obviously never studied the bible.
Why would you praise Mary or Peter. The bible states there is none righteos not one.
No…. Works only get you rewards & crowns in Heaven!
Oh I was looking for Christian Answers
Well it is here. Didn’t u watch the full vid?
You wont find salvation here. IT IS FAITH BY GRACE . NO WORKS NECESSARY.
Salvation is by faith alone, and our faith is the grace of God, and the right faith to the God of the Trinity is the source of all good works.
Where do you find anywhere in scripture that salvation is by faith alone?
Seems to me that is a man-made saying.
1:50 no, he means works, because that's what he says. The mosaic law IS good works. This distinction is not found in the text
2:30 no, because only christians can do good works, everything that stems from unbelief is sin. Man is totally depraved, and does not do ANY good. It's impossible to do good works by "human nature" as he calls it pre-justification because man's nature is "only wicked all the time"
3:25 that...
The book of James says “Faith without works is dead”
The other issue is the word church doesn’t exist in scripture.

Faith Alone
Clement of Rome
All these, therefore, were highly honoured, and made great, not for their own sake, or for their own works, or for the righteousness which they wrought, but through the operation of His will. Amen.
John Chrysostom
The patriarch Abraham himself before receiving circumcision had been declared righteous on the score of faith alone: before circumcision, the text says, “Abraham believed God, and credit for it brought him to righteousness.”
“What is the “law of faith?” It is, being saved by grace. Here he shows God’s power, in that He has not only saved, but has even justified, and led them to boasting, and this too without needing works, but looking for faith only.”
To say the early church did not teach Faith alone is a BOLD FACE LIE.
Have you read the full passages you cited from?

That wasn't a Protestant answer
And if you think it was, then you don't understand catholic teaching
The Catholic Church rejects the idea that we are saved by our own works
The Catholic Church also rejects justification by faith alone
Instead we are justified by faith and works that the grace of God has produced in us
The good works that justify are not works that from from our own power but from the grace of God
What a bunch of heritics...if not flat out apostates
Works CAN NOT save/justify us.
Gal2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
..
Don't believe or reject what Christ taught THROUGH Paul that applies to you and I?
Gal 1:6-9 is Christs warning to you.
6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Matthew 25
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’
45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’
46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”
Scripture by grace, through our faith NOT OF WORKS not if ourselves, lest anyone should boast.

do you even read the scripture you are quoting or have you just been given proof texts
In Rom 6:15-23 St Paul tells us that we must live lives of righteousness turning our back on sin or we will die,
He tells us we must be slaves to God so we may be sanctified and at it end receive eternal life.
Eph 2:8-9 tells us that because we are sinners we require Gods grace the forgiveness of our sin to be saved,
Because it is not our work that forgiven our sin does not mean that our faith does not require works.
Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. (rom 3:31)
In Revelations 22:17 will give his forgiveness without cost for the price of sin is death.
He asks noone to pay that price only to repent but that does not mean we do not have to keep our Garment of righteousness clean and stop sinning
Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates.
Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and fornicators and murderers and idolaters, and every one who loves and practices falsehood. (Rev 22:14-15)
Jesus tells us only those who donot defile this garment with sin will not be blotted out of the book of life.
“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.
“‘I know your works; you have the name of being alive, and you are dead.
Awake, and strengthen what remains and is on the point of death, for I have not found your works perfect in the sight of my God.
Remember then what you received and heard; keep that, and repent. If you will not awake, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come upon you.
Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments; and they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy.
He who conquers shall be clad thus in white garments, and I will not blot his name out of the book of life; I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ (rev 3:1-6)

"In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory"
This isnt rocket science, its catholic pride in wanting to have some part in their salvation. Johns gospel was written specifically to save the lost and he gives the requirement 90 straight times. "Believe", again not hard
1 cor 15 : "by which you are saved" - unless you believed in vain , believed .believed. believed. by which you are - saved. saved, s aved, - the Good News, the death, burial , resurrection, of Jesus Christ. We will have a desire to be different from the world , for the right motives, if wee are truly saved. how was the thief on the cross saved? He could not prove his salvation? He simply called upon the name of the Lord! Catholicism is similar to islam, it grows mainly through the birth rate in large Catholic families and conditioning. Regular Christians are 'born again' into Gods kingdom. "except a man is born again, he can not see the kingdom of God.
Remember though from a Catholic that it is not works in of themselves that saves us. From a Catholic point of view it is perfectly reasonable to say that the thief went to Heaven because he was saved by faith but for us believers who well live after excepting Jesus must the works the would be a product of true faith. That's not to say there's some quanity of works you have to do. It's more about how you live your life.

2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Paul interpreted it for me. No conflict at all.
James is speaking about what type of faith saves you. Real saving faith, will produce work (it's the fruit of true saving faith) and is justified before MAN, but NOT before God. We are justified by God and counted righteous through our faith alone.

This is Christ forgiveness for our sin, and it is only by this forgiveness that we may be saved.
To enter this state does require repentance, faith and Baptism though obedience but it is Christ forgiveness and only that that make us righteous.
